Two hundred and twenty-eight patients with cervical neoplasia, detected in routine uterine cancer screening at the Center for Adult Diseases, Osaka, from 1973 through 1977 were selected. The histological diagnosis was as follows: dysplasia, 69; carcinoma in situ, 102; and microinvasive carcinoma, 57. A retrospective study of this material was made with the aid of adequate colposcopic colour photographs, and features likely to be useful in differential diagnosis were determined. Atypical vessels were seen in 24 of 36 patients (67%) with Stage Ia1 lesions, but only in a few of those with Stage 02 lesions. Punctation, mosaic and white epithelium were less evident in stage Ia2 than in Stage 01 and Stage 02. Punctation, mosaic and white epithelium in patients with dysplasia were less formed, and their borders were less distinct than in patients with Stage 0 lesions. These characteristic changes are of value in accurate colposcopic diagnosis.

An improved method of preparing vaginal smears for use in the Auto-Cyto-Screener is reported. The main alterations from the previous technique were the substitution of 2% formaldehyde phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) for 50% ethanol as the preservative fluid, the use of homogenization in place of sonication for cell aggregate dispersion and the introduction of Ficoll-gradient sedimentation, which not only removes leukocytes and other elements from the suspensions but also concentrates the cancer cells to some extent. An examination of cell deposition techniques showed that optimal results were achieved with the use of filter paper, not rubber, and with centrifugation performed immediately after loading the suspension into the chambers.

Eighteen subjects, who were diagnosed as idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus in our outer patient clinic, were undergone with CT scan, metrizamide CT cisternography (CTC), radioisotope cisternography (RIC), and they were classified into 3 groups in accordance with ischemic score which had been proposed by Hachinski. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt was performed in 17 subjects, but improvement of the symptoms were obtained only in five. Dementia, gait disturbance and urinary incontinence were common features among the ones who had clinical improvement after shunt and the ones who had not, but systemic arterial hypertension and focal ischemic signs were more frequently found in formers than in latters. The subjects with low ischemic score were classified into Group 1, and the one with high ischemic score were classified into Group 2 and the other one with moderate score were into Group 3. The subjects who had clinical improvement postoperatively were exclusively found in Group 2 and 3. If the degree of ischemic score has good correlation with actual existence of cerebral ischemic lesions, we might suspect from our data that systemic arterial hypertension and ischemic lesion of the cerebrum might be basic pathologies which develop an idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

A clinicopathological study of gastric carcinoma was carried out according to Lauren's classification, on 207 patients, who underwent gastric resection at Department of Surgery II, Kyushu University, Faculty of Medicine from 1970 to 1972. Among them 93 cases (44.9%) were of intestinal-type carcinoma, 71 (34.3%) of diffuse carcinoma and 43 (20.8%) of other types. Intestinal-type carcinoma, often showing the protuberant type, was more common in the aged and in men. Most had a low grade of penetration, while in some, the penetration was moderate to high grade and was associated with lymph node metastasis, lymphatic and vascular involvement, or liver metastasis. Hematogenous recurrence was not infrequent. Diffuse carcinoma was more common in younger subjects and women, and was often of the depressed type. The serosa was involved in most cases. High grade penetration was associated with lymphatic permeation. Metastasis via the bloodstream was infrequent. Recurrence was often due to peritoneal dissemination. A better prognosis was indicated in cases of diffuse carcinoma with no serosal involvement, while prognosis in cases of invasion of the serosa was worse for diffuse carcinoma than for intestinal-type carcinoma.
Administration of 1,25-(OH)2D3 to developing 14-day chick embryo gave precocious induction of alkaline phosphatase in 20-day chick embryonic duodenum. 1,25-(OH)-2D3-induced alkaline phosphase involved in changes in Km and Vmax values. Furthermore, polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis of n-butanol-solubilized alkaline phosphatase from control and 1,25-(OH)2D3-treated chick embryonic duodenum revealed that 1,25-(OH)2D3 involved the transformation of neuraminidase-resistant fast migrating form to the neuraminidase-sensitive faster migrating one. Scanning electron microscopic data showed that the injection of 1,25-(OH)2D3 stimulated the elongation of duodenal microvilli, although there was no effect on the duodenal absorptive epithelial cell height.
In order to evaluate the histological changes in endomyocardial biopsies from 121 patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy, quantitation of histological findings was performed and analysed by univariate and multivariate statistical analysis. Several findings, i.e. (1) disarray of myofibers, (2) hypertrophy of myofibers, (3) scarcity of myofibrils, (4) nuclear changes, (5) vacuolization, (6) proliferation of collagen fibers, (7) endocardial thickening, (8) interstitial edema, (9) cell infiltration, (10) fatty infiltration and (11) basophile degeneration, were graded in five degrees (- to 4+) or two degrees (- or +) depending upon the severity and the extent of each finding. The univariate analysis of the graded histological findings revealed no remarkable difference between the biopsies from HCM and CCM pts, except for nuclear changes, which appeared to be more prevalent in CCM (p less than 0.05). In the categorical principal component analysis of the first six histological findings listed above, three principal components could be extracted. The first principal component was characterized by all six histological findings, the second by vacuolization and proliferation of collagen fibers, and the third by hypertrophy of myofibers. The mean values of the first principal scores indicated that, in either LVB or RVB histological changes were more severe in CCM than in HCM, and in fatal cases than in survivors. The second principal scores indicated that fatal cases had more collagenosis but less severe vacuolization than survivors. The histological findings in RVB appeared to be significantly correlated (r = 0.41, p less than 0.05) with those in LVB obtained from the same heart, but some differences were noted, myofiber hypertrophy and vacuolization being more prominent in LVB than in RVB.
