Comparative analysis of amino acids of three species of gangesia (Cestoda: Proteocephalata).

A total of 21 amino acids were detected in the present investigations on three species of Gangesia (Cestoda: Proteocephalata) viz. G. bengalensis Woodland, 1924, G. hanumanthai Seth & Capoor, 1982 and G sanehensis Malhotra et al., 1981. The study was conducted in a sub-humid region around Allahabad, India. The implications of amino acid utilization in metabolic activities of fish tapeworms have been discussed.

Experimental diabetes in cats induced by partial pancreatectomy alone or combined with local injection of alloxan.

Experimental diabetes was produced in cats by partial pancreatectomy using a short and technically simple surgical procedure. Electrocautery was used to cauterize pancreatic blood vessels and seal free edges of remaining pancreatic tissue to prevent secretion of pancreatic enzymes into the peritoneal cavity. In a second group of animals, partial pancreatectomy was followed by local injection of alloxan into an arterial branch of the cranio-mesenteric artery. The combined procedure resulted in diabetes mellitus in 100% (8 of 8) animals as compared to only 70% (14 of 20) in those subjected to partial pancreatectomy alone. In addition, the alloxan-pancreatectomized cats had a reduced latency period prior to onset of chronic hyperglycemia (4.8 days compared to 19.3 days postoperatively in pancreatectomized cats). The diabetic cats were maintained in poor metabolic control (blood glucose approximately 300 mg/dl) by daily injections of low doses of long-acting insulin. Pancreatic enzyme supplementation was given by mouth. Weight changes and blood glucose levels were monitored carefully to maintain the health of the animals while keeping them in poor metabolic control.

The hijras of India: cultural and individual dimensions of an institutionalized third gender role.

The hijra (eunuch/transvestite) is an institutionalized third gender role in India. Hijra are neither male nor female, but contain elements of both. As devotees of the Mother Goddess Bahuchara Mata, their sacred powers are contingent upon their sexuality. In reality, however, many hijras are prostitutes. This sexual activity undermines their culturally valued sacred role. This paper discusses religious meanings of the hijra role, as well as the ways in which individuals and the community deal with the conflicts engendered by their sexual activity.

Comparison of various assays to quantitate macrophage activation by biological response modifiers.

Macrophages treated with various compounds that enhance host antitumor resistance exhibit measurable changes in metabolism, function, and surface antigens. In this study, murine peptone-induced peritoneal macrophages were stimulated in vitro by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), muramyl dipeptide (MDP), and poly I.poly C. They were subsequently compared in their ability to release superoxide and act as tumoristatic and tumoricidal effector cells. Superoxide generation was assayed by the reduction of ferricytochrome C. All three compounds failed to induce significant O2- release, unless the cells were also treated with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). MDP was most active in potentiating the PMA response. In the tumor growth inhibition assay, cytostatic activity was comparable for all three compounds and did not exceed 32 percent. The combination of subthreshold levels of these compounds and hybridoma-derived MAF acted synergistically to induce potent cytostatic activity. In the chromium release assay, LPS and poly I.poly C rendered macrophages cytolytic for P815 target cells at concentrations greater than or equal to 1 microgram/ml. In contrast, significant cytolysis was observed with MDP only at 100 micrograms/ml. Defining precisely the effect of various biological response modifiers on several parameters of macrophage function may facilitate use of these agents in cancer therapy.
