The effect of tonsillar T cell subpopulations in antigen-specific lymphocyte proliferative response. Evidence of T cell suppression.

The presence of specific T cell subsets in tonsils, during in vitro generation of peripheral blood lymphocyte proliferative response was investigated. Tonsil T cells were selected for their activity with the monoclonal antibodies OKT4 and OKT8. The suppressor cell assay revealed the effects of tonsillar T cell subpopulations identified as OKT4- and OKT8-. The OKT8- had no inhibitory effects on proliferation of peripheral lymphocytes by Dermatophagoides farinae antigen in vitro.

[Effect of cefadroxil in urinary tract infections].

Clinical effect of cefadroxil (CDX) against urinary tract infections was reported herein. CDX, a daily dose of 0.75 g t.i.d., has been applied for the treatment of (I) 40 cases with simple UTI for average 6.4 days and (II) 47 cases with the complicated UTI for average 8.9 days. Rates of effectiveness were obtained 95% in (I) and 57% in (II). Side effects were noted in 10 cases (9.3%) out of total 107 cases.

[Effect of cefaclor in urinary tract infections (2)].

A second part of our continuous investigation on the clinical effect of cefaclor (CCL) against urinary tract infections was reported herein. CCL, a daily dose of 0.75 g t.i.d., has been applied for the treatment of (I) 76 cases with the uncomplicated acute cystitis in the women, and (II) 55 cases with the complicated. Rates of effectiveness were obtained 98.7% in (I) and 60% in (II). Side effects were noted in 13 cases out of total 150 cases.

Study on the jaw-closing muscle, Adductor mandibulae, of the salmon, Oncorhynchus masou. 1. Fiber types.

A histochemical study has been made on the jaw-closing muscle, Adductor mandibulae, of the Japanese salmon, Oncorhynchus masou. 3 main types of fibers can be distinguished on the basis of differences in SDH activity: 1. fibers with very high SDH activity; 2. fibers with intermediate SDH activity, and 3. fibers with low SDH activity, containing only a few formazan particles. And, fibers with large ranges in diameter were clearly observed in each of the three fiber types classified on the basis of SDH activity. Fibers with the highest SDH activity were recognized in the most medial part of the deep portion, whereas fibers with intermediate activity were mainly distributed in the lateral side of the deep portion. But, there was no discrete zone in the distribution of these fiber types, differing from the locomotor myotomes in the fish. These facts suggest that the A. mandibulae muscle is composed of, at least, more than 3 types of fibers and the function of this muscle is also complex in the fish as it is in the mammalian.

[Primary hyperparathyroidism associated with bladder tumor: report of a case].

A 47-year-old man was admitted with chief complaints of macroscopic hematuria and bone pain. Hypercalcemia still remained after three small papillary tumors on the left retrotrigonal wall of the bladder were resected transurethrally. Some biochemical as well as X-ray examinations thereafter pointed out an association with primary hyperparathyroidism. An adenoma arising from right upper parathyroid gland was found and excised. Then his symptoms, both subjective and objective, were normalized. Six documented cases of primary hyperparathyroidism associated with urological malignancy including our own were found in the Japanese literature.

[Downbeat nystagmus during eye closure].

We studied eye movements and clinical findings in 1225 patients with complaints of dizziness. Downbeat nystagmus was demonstrated in 11 patients during eye closure. Simultaneous vertical and horizontal eye recordings were examined to demonstrate vertical eye position during eye closure. Downbeat nystagmus appeared on midline position even during eye closure in six patients. An electrooculography was demonstrated in three out of above six patients. A 24-year-old woman (Case 1) complained of a single spell of vertigo. There was no remarkable finding on neurological examination. An audiogram was an abrupt type sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. A caloric test was normal. Horizontal and vertical smooth pursuit was normal. Optokinetic nystagmus showed normal response in both horizontal and vertical planes. Both eyes were elevated on eye closure. They were depressed to the midline position with mental task and downbeat nystagmus appeared. A 68-year-old man (Case 2) had a history of dizziness on walking of three-year duration. On examination neurological findings were normal. A caloric test was normal in both ears. Optokinetic nystagmus and smooth pursuit were normal in both horizontal and vertical eye recordings. He had a transient eye elevation on eye closure. Both eyes immediately came downward to midline position and downbeat nystagmus was demonstrated. His nystagmus had persisted for four years. A 68-year-old woman (Case 3) complained of positional vertigo of seven-month duration. Neurological findings were normal. A caloric test was normal. There was a conductive hearing loss on the left ear. The right ear showed a normal audiogram.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Bilateral asynchronous ureteral tumors associated with a horseshoe kidney: a case report].

A case of bilateral asynchronous ureteral tumors in a 58-year-old man associated with a horseshoe kidney was reported. First, left heminephrectomy with total left ureterectomy had been performed because of the left ureteral carcinoma. Three years and 8 months later, he was admitted and an emergency right nephrostomy was made on account of false anuria. Then, right ureterectomy with total cystectomy was the choice of treatment against the ureteral tumor on the right side. This case of bilateral ureteral tumors associated with a horseshoe kidney appears to be the first one reported in the Japanese literature.

First observation of a muscle spindle in fish.

In many groups of vertebrates, the muscle spindle is a specialized sensory organ for the detection of muscle stretching. The structure of the spindle varies among vertebrate classes. Moreover, Barker has asserted that Amphibia are the most primitive vertebrates to possess muscle spindles. Extensive studies, made mainly on the locomotor myotome, seem to show that the muscle receptors of fish are less specialized than those of more advanced animals, and that muscle spindles are absent. However, little attention has been paid to the jaw-closing muscle. We report here our finding of a very simple muscle spindle with a single intrafusal fibre in the well-developed jaw-closing muscle, adductor mandibulae, in a primitive teleostean, Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort).

Fine structure of the horny teeth of the lamprey, Entosphenus japonicus.

The fine structure of the horny teeth of the lamprey, Entosphenus japonicus, was examined by light- and electron-microscopy. Most of the horny teeth consisted of two horny and two nonhorny layers. The primary horny layer was well keratinized, and the cells were closely packed and intensely interdigitated, being joined together by many modified desmosomes. The plasma membrane of the horny cell, unlike the membranes of other vertebrates, was not thickened. The intercellular spaces were filled with electron-dense material. Microridges were seen on the free surface. Structures resembling microridges were found on the underside of the primary horny layer. The secondary horny layer displayed various stages of keratinization. The keratinization started at the apex and developed toward the base. In the early stage of keratinization, the superficial cells became cylindrical and were arranged in a row forming a dome-shaped line. Their nuclei were situated in the basal part of the cells. The appearance of the nonhorny layers varied according to the degree of keratinization of the horny layers beneath them. The nonhorny cells were joined together by many desmosomes and possessed many tonofilament bundles. The replacement and keratinization of the horny teeth are discussed in the light of these results.

[Effect of cefaclor in urinary tract infections (the first report)].

A part of our continuous investigation on the clinical effect of cefaclor against urinary tract infections was reported herein. Cefaclor, a daily dose of 0.75 g t.i.d., has been applied for the treatment of (I) 26 cases with the simple UTI and (II) 41 cases with the complicated.
