A 49-year-old female complaining of hematemesis was examined by emergency endoscopy. Multiple gastric erosions and ulcers which had healed after 6 weeks, except for one ulcer, were found. A biopsy of this unhealed ulcer revealed gastric carcinoma. Enucleation of the tumor was performed because of multiple metastases to the liver, lung and the lymph nodes. The high serum alpha-fetoprotein level (800 ng/ml) and the size of a coin lesion in an X-ray film of the chest before the enucleation decreased post- operatively.
Two permanent T-cell leukemia lines designated KH-1 and KH-2 were established from the peripheral blood of a 9-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and a 47-year-old man with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). No T-cell growth factor was used. KH-1 cells grew as single cells and KH-2 cells formed clusters in suspension culture. Erosette formation, the absence of immunoglobulin determinants and Epstein-Barr-virus-associated nuclear antigen, and the presence of T-cell antigens revealed by monoclonal antibodies were characteristics of these cell lines as in other established T-cell leukemia lines. Chromosome analysis at the beginning revealed mosaic presence of cells with 46, XY, t(8q+; 15q-) and 46, XY which was later completely replaced by the latter karyotype in KH-1, and abnormal karyotype, 47, XY, +3, t (8q-; 10p+) was maintained throughout the period of in vitro passage in KH-2. The donor patient of KH-2 formerly lived in the south-western part of Japan where ATL is considered endemic and numerous type-C virus particles were detected electron microscopically, in KH-2 cell pellets.

We treated a Japanese man with aneurysmal dilatation of the bovine graft transplanted for femorofemoral bypass. The reconstruction was performed successfully by the replacement with a Dacron graft 29 months after the first operation. Aneurysmal dilation was observed over the entire length of the graft, and the wall of the graft was fragile. Disruption of collagen fibers and bleeding into the graft wall from the arteries which had been newly formed in abundance were extensive. The histological findings suggested that bovine grafts should be used for only a short period or for the replacement of small arteries.

The ribosomal cistrons (rDNA)/genome ratio was measured in five cell lines derived from three chemically induced erythroblastic leukemias (D-1, D-2, and NE26) in the Long-Evans (LE) rat and compared with values in the normal liver, bone marrow, and fetus. The ratio was 20-42% higher in the leukemias than in normal tissues. The number of autoradiographic silver grains of 125I-labeled rRNA hybridized in situ over three nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) of leukemia cells was determined and compared with that of the normal cells. Although the distribution of silver grains of normal cells averaged 44.6%, 25.9%, and 29.5% in NORs of chromosomes #3, #11, and #12, respectively, their distribution was abnormal in two of the leukemias examined; rDNA was amplified in chromosomes #12 of two sublines (K1DA and K1DB) of one leukemias (D-1), and in one chromosome #3 of two sublines (K2D and K3D) of another leukemia (D-2). We consider the possibility that these abnormal patterns of rDNA distribution are related to the increase in rDNA in leukemia cells.
The paper electrophoretic pattern of the oligosaccharides released from the plasma membranes of K-562 cells by hydrazinolysis was quite different from that of human erythrocyte membranes. Bio-Gel P-4 column chromatography in combination with sequential exoglycosidase digestion of the neutral oligosaccharide fractions revealed that all those from K-562 cells are of the high mannose type, while those from erythrocytes are of large complex type structures. Studies of the acidic oligosaccharides indicated that none of those obtained from K-562 cells contained the beta-N-acetylglucosamine residue linked at the C-4 position of the beta-mannosyl residue of the trimannosyl core, which occurs in most of the asparagine-linked sugar chains of human erythrocytes. This indicates that the glucosaminyltransferase that forms the GlcNAc beta 1 leads to 4Man beta 1 leads to group has not been expressed in K-562 cells.
Spores of Clostridium tetani germinated in liver broth with +580 mV as the starting Eh value, and those of Clostridium butyricum germinated in liver broth with an initial Eh of +400 mV regardless of the presence or absence of a liquid paraffin covering. Spores of Bacillus subtilis germinated in liver broth with--100 mV as the starting Eh value. Also, it was found that there are two ranges of starting Eh values for germination and vegetative growth of Cl. tetani, Cl. butyricum, and B. subtilis. In the first range these spores germinated and grew, but in the second range they only germinated and then died without outgrowth.

Six cases of multiple myeloma were studied regarding functions and pathology of the kidney. Glomerular changes were minimal, whereas tubular and interstitial changes were noted in all cases. Tubular cells were degenerative and atrophic in cases excreting more than 3 g BJP daily in the urine. Cases without BJP had only minor changes. The most severe impairment of renal function was found in a patient with Fanconi's syndrome, with hypercalcemia, calcium in the tubules, tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis. In attempting to correlate immunoglobulin abnormalities with renal histology, immunoperoxidase staining of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains were done on kidney sections. Glomerular and interstitial tissues gave a definitely negative reaction. In contrast, positive staining of light chain of corresponding type wrs found in the cytoplasma of the tubules and most tubular casts, with different degrees possibly in accord with the amounts of BJP.

Noninbred Long-Evans rats fed Sudan III at 24 hours before they were given an injection of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) displayed prominently suppressed DMBA-induced chromosome aberrations (CA) in their bone marrow cells. Rats fed Sudan III simultaneously with the DMBA injection showed no suppressed CA effect. The suppressive effect of Sudan III on DMBA-induced CA paralleled the dose rate of Sudan III when given in the range between 1 and 10 mg Sudan III/kg body weight; higher doses produced no additional suppression. The capacity of various Sudan III-related chemicals to prevent DMBA-induced CA paralleled their capacity to prevent DMBA-induced adrenal apoplexy and mammary cancer. Among the azo dyes investigated, Sudan III was most efficient in protecting against DMBA-induced CA. Polychlorinated biphenyl and phenobarbital, inducers of drug-metabolizing enzymes, also suppressed DMBA-induced CA.
Netilmicin was intramuscularly injected at a daily dose of 200 mg, divided twice, for 5 to 10 days to 14 patients with complicated urinary tract infection caused by P. aeruginosa. The clinical results were excellent in 7 cases, good in 5 cases, and fair in 2 cases. Neither side effects nor abnormal values in laboratory findings were reported. The MIC of netilmicin against 14 strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from the above patients were distributed between 3.13 micrograms/ml and 12.5 micrograms/ml except 1 strain at inoculum size 10(6) cells/ml.
