Jansen's metaphyseal dysostosis.

A case of Jansen's metaphyseal dysostosis, a rare disorder of endochondral ossification, is described. This is the first case in which the severe radiographic manifestations of this disease were detected at birth. Linear growth is significantly retarded at 2 years of age. Nevertheless, because full ossification with trabeculae is anticipated, early recognition and appropriate management during the phase of active growth should minimize deformities.

Interferon responsiveness of rabbit synovial cells and chondrocytes.

Rabbit synovial cells (SC), articular chondrocytes (AC), and epiphyseal (EC) chondrocytes were grown in vitro. A portion of the spectrum of human pathogenic viruses infective for the cells was determined. Responses of the cells to different viruses or a chemical inducer of interferon varied, with EC responding vigorously and with high titers, AC responding only to chemical inducer and influenza virus, and SC producing no detectable interferon. All cells supported prolonged growth of influenza virus without showing microscopic cytopathology.

Aorto-enteric fistula presenting as multicentric osteomyelitis.

A 60-year-old man treated with a prothesis for aorto-enteric fistulae developed multicentric osteomyelitis. Enteric flora were cultured from blood and bone but the diagnosis was delayed. Aorto-enteric fistulae can occur in a variety of circumstances but have become more common with the advent of reconstructive vascular surgery using prostheses. This entity frequently does not present in a dramatic way, but can be the cause of fatal bacteremia and septicemia.

Coxa vara in three patients with concommitant cerebral palsy.

Many theories have been advanced to explain the final neck shaft angle in the developing proximal femur. Muscle spasticity and delayed weight-bearing are the postulated causes of the development of the valgus deformity in patients with neuromuscular disease. Three patients with coxa vara exhibited some degree of spasticity and delayed weight-bearing. In spite of this, each child developed a varus rather than a valgus hip deformity. Existing theories seem not to adequately explain the development of the final neck shaft angle.
