Effects of energy-containing nutrients on blood pressure of salt-loaded rats.

The present study was performed to investigate whether blood pressure of salt-loaded rats was influenced by the diet. Salt-loaded rats of Wistar strain were fed a high protein high fat diet or a high carbohydrate diet from the age of one month. The experiment was designed so that the intake of sodium chloride was equal in two groups. The body weight on the 14th week of the experiment was 394 +/- 15 g (Mean +/- SE) in the high protein high fat group, and 348 +/- 13 g in the high carbohydrate group. Blood pressure measured weekly by a tail plethysmographic method rose gradually and reached 176 +/- 5 mmHg (Mean +/- SE) on the 14th week in the high carbohydrate group. It was significantly higher than that (127 +/- 7 mmHg) of the high protein high fat group. The pressor responses to angiotensin and noradrenalin were also examined to investigate the mechanism through which salt hypertension was produced more easily by feeding a high carbohydrate diet. These responses to both drugs tended to be greater in the high carbohydrate group, but the differences between the two groups was not significant.

Eosinophilic meningitis: a suspected case of angiostrongylosis found in Shizuoka Prefecture, Honshu, Japan.

A patient with eosinophilic meningitis in Shizuoka Prefecture, Honshu, Japan had nausea, vomiting and headache on admission; laboratory examinations revealed leukocytosis with eosinophilia. Eight days later neck stiffness appeared. Lumbar puncture showed an increase of the initial pressure in association with eosinophilic pleocytosis in the spinal fluid. The possibility of angiostrongylosis was considered because the patient had eaten raw slugs for 4 years as a remedy for lumbago. Although the serum contained cross-reactive antibodies against Toxocara canis, positive reactions to Angiostrongylus cantonensis antigens were observed in all of the immunological tests made. These observations, together with results of epidemiological studies in Honshu carried out by other investigators, suggest that the present case of eosinophilic meningitis may have been caused by A. cantonensis. One previous case has been reported from Honshu Island, Japan.

[A clinical study on the development of the acetabulum after various treatment in congenital dislocation of the hip (author's transl)].

In the treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip, prognosis varies greatly according to the status of the development of the acetabulum. In most of the patients with osteoarthritis of the hip primary causes are found. In this series, 50% had congenital dislocation of the hip and 35% had acetabular dysplasia. In order to identify the conditions of hip joints in which the acetabular development can be expected from conservative treatment and to estimate the limit of age for indication of this treatment, the status of the development of the acetabulum was investigated after various treatment. This is expected to provide valuable data for the establishment of the method of treatment for cases without hope for the development of the acetabulum. According to the results, patients with acetabular angle of more than 30% at the age of 3 years have less possibility of normalization in the future and therefore active means for formation of the acetabulum should be considered in these patients. As such active means included are formation of the acetabulum through the pelvic osteotomy and the derotation-varus osteotomy are available in order to improve concentric position of the femoral head. It was also indicated that more favourable results could be obtained in patients who had undergone the pelvic osteotomy. The most favourable results were obtained in patients in whom both operations were used in combination. It was concluded from the results of the study that the best method is to perform the pelvic osteotomy first and to add the derotation-varus osteotomy as indicated.

[Fundamental and clinical studies in pediatrics on PC-904, a penicillin with broad spectrum newly developed in Japan (author's transl)].

Fundamental and clinical studies of PC-904, a newly developed penicillin with a broad spectrum, were performed and the following results were obtained. (1) The serum levels of PC-904 after 1.5 hours drip infusion reached the peak at 1 hour or at the end of the infusion and the detectable levels of PC-904 were maintained up to 2 or 3 hours after the end of the infusion. (2) The urinary excretion rates up to 6 hours after the onset of the infusion were 19.2 approximately 25.5%. (3) Forty-one patients were treated with PC-904 and the majority of the diseases were acute respiratory infections. The treatment by the drip infusion of 50 approximately 100 mg/kg/day resulted in good responses to whooping cough, and lacunar tonsillitis, lymphadenitis and staphylococcal scald skin syndrome resistant to the treatment by ampicillin and cephalexin. The satisfactory results were also obtained by the treatment of almost the same dosage in the patients with acute bronchitis, bronchopneumonia and measles pneumonia. (4) Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated from the sputum culture of the patients with bronchopneumonia and they responded well to the treatment with PC-904. (5) The drip infusion of 60 approximately 70 mg/kg/day for 5 approximately 6 days was shown to be useful in the treatment of urinary tract infection of which the causative organism was E. coli. (6) No side effects were observed except rubella-like eruption in one case. (7) Clinical evaluation was examined in all cases except one patient of which the medication was withdrawn due to eruption, and the overall clinical efficacy was excellent or good in all of 40 cases.
