Venous complications after i.v. administration of Diazemuls (diazepam) and Dormicum (midazolam).

Local venous reactions during and after the injection i.v. of diazepam in oil (Diazemuls) and the water-soluble benzodiazepine midazolam (Dormicum) were studied in 100 patients undergoing gastroscopy. Observation time was 2 weeks. Of the patients receiving diazepam in oil, 8% experienced pain on injection and 6% subsequently developed clinical evidence of thrombophlebitis. Corresponding figures for midazolam were 6% and 10% respectively. No significant differences were observed between the effects of the two drugs.

Genetic analysis of the Stanford LRC family study data. I. Structured exploratory data analysis of height and weight measurements.

A new methodology for determining mode for inheritance of continuously distributed traits in nuclear families, structured exploratory data analysis (SEDA), is described and applied to height and weight measurements. The family data were collected as part of the Lipid Research Clinic's collaborative study (LRC) and consists of first degree relatives of Stanford University employees who were selected either as a 2% random sample or were identified through a high lipid value. The variables are all standardized using three methods of age and sex adjustment based on two reference populations. The analysis and interpretations are based on the following statistics and indices: 1) the major gene index (MGI (alpha); 2) two measures of correlations between the midparental value and offspring (MPCC); and 3) the offspring between parent functions (OBP (beta). Consistent with a number of other studies, the results support that height shows multifactorial inheritance while height is principally under the influence of non-genetic environmental factors. In contrast to the random families, the male children of the probands who were selected due to their high lipid values exhibit height measurements which appear to involve environmental components or some major gene concomitants. The difference between the random and high lipid families is supported by all three statistical methods.

Characterization of Bacteroides asaccharolyticus and B. melaninogenicus oral isolates.

Experiments were designed to characterize a number of oral "pigmented" Bacteroides isolates with regard to their pathogenicity in an experimental model system and a number of other properties. T these include fatty acid determination, hemagglutination studies, collagenase and protease activities, and vitamin K dependency. Oral B, asaccharolyticus and B, melaninogenicus isolates differed from one another in phenylacetic acid production, hemagglutination, collagenase activity, and pathogenicity. All B. asaccharolyticus were found to be pathogenic in the vivo mixed infection model and this property could be correlated with biochemical enzymatic activities.

Chlorinated phenoxyacetic acid derivatives and tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in foliage after application of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid esters.

Six reforestation areas were sprayed with 2,4,5-T esters. Leaf samples from the areas were analyzed for the esters, tetrachlorodioxin, and dehalogenated phenoxyacetic acid esters. Tetrachlorodioxin was found in one leaf sample only, but the level found, relative to the amount of 2,4,5-T ester found, was lower than in the formulation material used in the study. The concentration of the dichlorophenoxyacetic acid esters present in several leaf samples was greater, relative to the 2,4,5-T ester, which indicated a photochemical breakdown of the 2,4,5-T in the environment.

Delimitation of plasma creatinine concentration values for assessment of relative renal function in adult patients.

Plasma creatinine concentrations and glomerular filtration rates (GFR) were determined simultaneously in 200 females and 180 males of various ages (20-79 years) covering all degrees of relative renal function: normal (greater than 75%); moderately impaired (75-52%); considerably impaired (51-28%); and severely impaired (greater than 28%). The percentages express GFR relative to corresponding age--and sex-dependent normal means. This relative parameter evaluates whether--and to what extent--the combined function of the two kidneys is affected by nephro-urological disorders. For practical purposes plasma creatinine was found to be independent of age in all function groups for both sexes. The data were used to delimit plasma creatinine concentrations for the assessment of relative renal function. For females the limits of plasma creatinine (mumol per litre) were: "normal" (less than 115); "moderately elevated" (115-150); "considerably elevated" (151-250); and "profoundly elevated" (greater than 250). The corresponding figures for males were: less than 128; 128-170; 171-270; and greater than 270.

Effect of 2 MHz ultrasound on DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in Pisum sativum root meristem cells.

The amounts of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis were determined in Pisum sativum root meristem cells at various times after a 1 min exposure to 1 MHz ultrasound at a power density of 30 W/cm2. Immediate depressions in all three macromolecular syntheses occurred after sonication, followed by an apparent recovery several hours later. These events appear to correlate in time with the subsequent reduction and recovery in mitotic index in Pisum sativum root meristem cells exposed to 2 MHz ultrasound.

[Morphological and angiographic studies on mammary artery in coronary sclerosis].

Macroscopic and microscopic studies on the anterior interventricular ramus of left coronary artery, internal thoracic artery, and great saphenous vein were carried out 50 dead, aged 21 to 60 years. The internal thoracic artery was always normal whereas in 40 cases stenosing coronary sclerosis was found. At mammography, 25 patients with operable coronary obstruction also showed no degenerative alterations of this systematic artery. With a diameter of 1.5 mm in the 5th intercostal space the internal thoracic artery was fit for performing an anastomosis.
