We studied 10 patients with Minamata disease (organic mercury poisoning) who have been followed for over 20 years. CT revealed a bilateral, symmetric, low-density area in the visual cortex and diffuse atrophy of the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis, especially the inferior vermis. Computerized quantitative analysis of the tremor of these patients showed a peculiar frequency of 7.075 Hz on postural tremor and 7.501 Hz on action tremor. On studies of short-latency somatosensory evoked potential, all patients showed a lack of the N20 component, the potential of the somatic sensory area.
Lymphocytotoxic autoantibody (LCTA) was studied in 9 patients with active pemphigus and 19 patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). All patients with SLE showed high titres of LCTA but only one patient with pemphigus had LCTA. In this paper we discuss the immunological significance of LCTA and the difference in the incidence of LCTA between pemphigus and SLE. In addition we present the clinical features of the case with LCTA-positive pemphigus and suggests that the presence of LCTA is due to the common viral infection.

Experimental cutaneous Candida albicans infections in guinea pigs are histologically characterized by intense epidermal polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) accumulation. To study the role of PMNs in vivo, we injected 250 microgcolchicine/kg i.p., a strong inhibitor of PMN chemotaxis, and observed the influence of reduced PMN migration in experimental cutaneous candidiasis with special interest in the elimination course of the organisms. There was a significant delay in the clearance of the organisms in the colchicine-treated group with decreased epidermal PMN infiltration and prolonged visible scaling process. Our data suggest that the delay of epidermal PMN migration parallels the disappearance of the organisms from the infected skin and that PMNs play an important part in defense against candida infections especially in the elimination process.
17 Japanese patients with pemphigus vulgaris were examined by HLA typing. HLA-DRW2 was found in none of them as compared to 56 (39%) of 144 Japanese controls (p = 0.02). The association of HLA-DRW4 with pemphigus vulgaris was not recognized in our study. HLA-A, B and C typings were also performed, showing relatively high frequencies of the B15, BW35 and CW4. However, the occurrence of these specificities was not statistically significant. It is suggested that DRW2 plays an important role in the susceptibility to pemphigus vulgaris.

An effect of colchicine on the active Arthus reaction in rabbits was investigated in vivo with simultaneous evaluation of in vitro chemotactic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Arthus reactions were induced by intracutaneous injection of ovalbumin into rabbits preimmunized with ovalbumin. Colchicine, 1 mg/kg or 2 mg/kg, injected intraperitoneally one hour prior to the induction of the Arthus reaction, suppressed erythema and induration at 12 h, when histology showed decreased numbers of C3, suggestive of the presence of immune complexes, persisted to 24 h. In vitro chemotaxis of polymorphonuclear leukocytes using Boyden chamber techniques revealed suppression of the activity in the colchicine-treated animals at 6 and 12 h. These findings suggest that colchicine inhibits vascular injury by interfering with directional chemotaxis of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to the lesional sites.

In vivo effects of colchicine on DNCB-induced primary irritant dermatitis in guinea-pigs were investigated with simultaneous evaluation of in vitro chemotactic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Colchicine, 125, 250 and 500 microgram/kg, was injected intraperitoneally 1 hour prior to the painting of 20 microliter of 10% DNCB in acetone on shaved dorsum of the animals. In the control animals, erythema and induration were maximum and dermal PMN infiltration was most intense at 24 hours. In the colchicine-treated animals, induration--but not erythema--was reduced, with sparse dermal PMN infiltration. In vitro chemotaxis of PMNs from cardiac blood to LPS-treated serum using Boyden chamber techniques revealed maximal suppression of the activity in the colchicine injected animals at 12 hours. It is suggested that the reduced induration and decreased infiltration of PMNs in the inflammatory tissue in the colchicine-injected animals are caused by prior suppression of locomotion of PMNs in the peripheral blood.
