A survey of impatient alcoholics in Okayama and Kochi Prefectures.

A survey of inpatient alcoholics was conducted in Okayama and Kochi prefectures in 1977 and 1979. The total number of inpatient alcoholics was 230 in Okayama and 401 in Kochi, Corresponding to 5.5% and 10.7% of the total number of inpatients in psychiatric hospitals, respectively. The percentage of female alcoholics was 6.6% in Okayama and 6.5% in Kochi. By age distribution, the percentage of elderly alcoholics was high, but young alcoholics in their 20s were extremely few. As for the marital state, the spouseless situation showed a high percentage. Regarding the defrayment of medical expenses, half of the patients were on relief. Alcoholics staying in hospital for a year or longer accounted for nearly one-half of the cases. Classification of the subtypes of alcoholism revealed that the problem drinking group accounted for the majority with over 60%, indicating that many cases of social problems were brought to the hospital.

A new methods for the 3'-deoxygenation of butirosins A and B.

An aziridine ring-formation involving the reaction of adjacent amino and alcohol groups with triphenylphosphine, carbon tetrachloride, and triethylamine was applied at the 2' and 3' positions of butirosin A (1a) and B (1b). The amino groups at the 2' position of 1a and 1b were p-methoxybenzylated to increase the nucleophilicity of the nitrogen atom and to avoid the formation of a P-N linkage, and the N-p-methoxybenzyl derivatives were converted into the aziridine derivatives, which were then subjected to hydrogenolysis and removal of the protecting groups to give 3'-deoxybutirosin A (7a) and B (7b), respectively. This new method is compared with the conventional N,O-protecting method that involves several complex steps.

Microbial transformation of validamycins.

Alpha- or beta-Glucosidic linkage of validamycin was selectively cleaved by microbial hydrolysis and especially the conversion of validamycin C into validamycin A by the selective hydrolysis of alpha-glucoside linkage has important significance because validamycin C is considerably less active than validamycin A. Semisyntheses of validamycins including a new validamycin, beta-D-galactosyl-validoxylamine A were carried out by microbial transglycosidation using validoxylamine A as a glycosyl acceptor. D-[U-14C]glucose and [14C]validoxylamine A were highly incorporated into validamycin A by validamycin-producing Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. limoneus.
