Primary retroperitoneal teratoma in an adult: ultrasonographic, computer tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrations.

A 25-year-old male patient with a primary retroperitoneal teratoma is described. The chief complaint was right hypochondralgia during exercise for seven days. Various diagnostic imagings disclosed an expansive, heterogeneous and fat-rich mass associated with multiple cystic lesions in the right suprarenal fossa. Sagittal, transaxial and coronal magnetic resonance imaging scan visualized the extent and character of the tumor very clearly. Histological examination of the tumor removed through a thoracoabdominal approach showed cystic teratoma with out malignant transformations.

Calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecules (cadherins): subclass specificities and possible involvement of actin bundles.

Cadherins are a family of cell-cell adhesion molecules and are divided into subclasses with distinct adhesive specificities and tissue distribution. Here we examined the distribution of cadherins at contact sites between cells expressing the same or different cadherin subclasses. Each cadherin was concentrated at the boundary between cells expressing an identical cadherin subclass, irrespective of the cell types connected. However, such localization decreased or disappeared at the boundary between cells containing different cadherin subclasses. We also found that the localization of cadherins precisely coincided with that of actin bundles; both were detected at the apical region of cell sheets. This co-localization was retained even after cells were either treated with cytochalasin D or extracted with the detergent NP40. These results suggest that each cadherin subclass preferentially interacts with its own molecular type at intercellular boundaries, and that cadherin molecules may be associated with actin-based cytoskeletal elements.

Two crystalline forms of a lectin from Flammulina veltipes.

A lectin from Flammulina veltipes (Enoki-dake) has been crystallized in a form suitable for crystallographic structure analysis. Two types of crystals were grown: one from polyethylene glycol 6000 solution at pH 7 and the other from ammonium sulfate solution at pH 7. The latter type is more suitable for the crystallographic investigations because of its high resolution X-ray diffraction and smaller number of asymmetric molecules.

Urinary retention due to idiopathic megacolon.

A 58-year-old man with neurogenic bladder dysfunction was hospitalized with chief complaints of urinary retention and abdominal distention. He had been treated for neurogenic bladder due to cerebral infarction for 3 years. The pelvic CT scan and excretory urogram revealed an obstruction of the neck of the bladder due to an abundant stool, which was found to have resulted from adult idiopathic megacolon. A permanent colostomy with sigmoid resection was established. The postoperative urodynamic examination demonstrated improvement of micturition.

Ganglioside composition of growth cone-deficient nerve cell cultures.

The ganglioside concentration and composition in growth cone-deficient nerve cells, induced by inclusion of cytochalasin B (CB) are compared with those of 2-day-old control cells from primary cultures of embryonic rat cerebral cortex. Ganglioside GM1 and GD1a are the major gangliosides in the growth cone. Ganglioside GM1 may be one of the membrane components of growth cones that function in neural recognition during development.

Growth cones in developing cultured cortical neurons.

Large numbers of growth cones were present in 6-day-old primary cultures of cerebral hemispheres from fetal rats. The average size of the growth cones was 24 by 28 microns. Many of these growth cones had both veil-like lamellipodia and filopodia. A few cones remained in 21-day-old cultures. These also had lamellipodia and filopodia. Ganglioside GM1 was present in both 6-day-old and 21-day-old cultured growth cones.

[Detection of beta-lactamase-producing bacteria from female patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis].

A total of 122 bacterial strains isolated from urine specimens of 113 female patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis were used for the study of beta-lactamase production and their susceptibility to various antimicrobial agents was determined. Beta-Lactamase activity was qualitatively determined by a paper strip acidimetric method with benzylpenicillin as substrate and by chromogenic cephalosporin methods using pyridine-2-azo-p-dimethylaniline cephalosporin or nitrocefin as substrate. Susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, including ampicillin, carbenicillin, cephalexin, cephalothin, gentamicin, minocycline, fosfomycin, pipemidic acid and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was examined by a disc method. The beta-lactamase-producing strains detected by at least one of the three tests were found in 18 of 105 Escherichia coli isolates and in the single strain of Enterobacter cloacae dermidis, 3 Enterococcus faecalis and 1 Staphylococcus aureus produced beta-lactamase. The isolation rate of strains resistant to ampicillin, carbenicillin and cephalothin in the beta-lactamase-producing strains was significantly higher than that in the non-beta-lactamase-producing strains (p less than 0.01). These results suggest that beta-lactamase plays an important role in developing resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics in patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infection as well as complicated infection.
