[Simultaneous determination of brucine and strychnine in semen Strychni by dual wavelength spectrophotometry and studies on processing principles of semen Strychni].

The paper reports the experimental result of the simultaneous quantitative determination of strychnine (ST) and brucine(BR) in Semen Strychni by dual wavelength spectrophotometry. The result shows that there are some deviations in the official method, because the wavelength combination might not have been chosen rightly and the correct coefficient is inconsistent with the facts. We have made a study of the thermal stability of ST and BR, too. On this basis a baking principle for Semen strychni is spelt out.

Utility of DRG and ICD-9-CM classification codes for the study of transfusion issues. Transfusions in patients with digestive diseases.

Red cell transfusions in all patients within specific medical or surgical diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-CM) classes were analyzed by a unique body of data that combined abstracted patient discharge records with the numbers of red cell units transfused. Informative measures of transfusion practice within an ICD-9-CM class were the proportion of patients transfused, the mean units transfused per patient, and the ratio of standard deviation to the mean of units transfused. Transfusion frequency plots (percentage of patients against units of red cells transfused per patient) revealed the existence of a modal transfusion frequency, as well as an asymmetric tail on the high frequency side. These and other features make it possible to characterize transfusion practice in specific ICD-9-CM classes. The mean units of red cells transfused for all patients in a DRG is a measure of blood resource utilization and should be useful in planning to meet future needs.

[Effect of rodents on reforestation in the moumtain regions near Beijing].

From 1993 until 1995, the influence of rodents on reforestation in the mountain regions near Beijing was studied in order to estimate the pressure of rodents on the seed supply, search for effective ways to decrease the loss of seeds due to consumption by rodents, and increase seed germinating power. It was shown that acorns, apricot pits and nuts are almost entirely carried away from the soil surface by rodents, thus suggesting that rodents have a great impact on the seed supply. When the seeds were sowed at a depth of about 5 cm, many of them were not eaten by rodents; 39% of acrons and 18% of apricot pits germinated on the following year. We propose that deep sowing of seeds may effectively decrease the loss of seeds through consumption by rodents.
