Effects of vasoactive agents on isolated human umbilical arteries in preeclamptic women treated with magnesium sulfate: a preliminary report.
Increased vascular reactivity has been noted in preeclampsia. It is uncertain whether this increased reactivity extends to the umbilical circulation. Helical strips of human umbilical arteries from 12 preeclamptic and 17 control patients were set up isometrically in physiological solution. Four preeclamptics who had not received magnesium were included. The resting tensions of the strips, amplitudes, frequencies, and times of onset of spontaneous contractions during the incubation period were noted and did not differ between the groups. When logarithmic dose contractile-response curves were made for serotonin, bradykinin, and KCl for each group, differences were noted only for KCl. The threshold dose for KCl was higher in tissues from the preeclamptic group (8.52 +/- 0.96 mM) compared to the controls (4.09 +/- 0.59 mM) regardless of magnesium therapy. Also, the ED50 for KCl was higher for preeclamptics given magnesium (12.45 +/- 1.21 mM) compared to controls (9.17 +/- 1.05 mM). There were no significant differences between maximal tensions obtained, but a trend was noted for preeclamptics who did not receive magnesium to develop less tension than either controls or preeclamptics who did receive magnesium, regardless of the agonist tested. Relaxation times differed only for KCl, where there was a shortening of the time for the preeclamptics (8.76 +/- 0.64 min) compared to controls (14.53 +/- 2.46 min). These results do not support other studies in which an increased peripheral vascular reactivity in preeclamptics was noted. An explanation for the decreased reactivity to KCl awaits further investigation.
Pityriasis rosea-like eruption associated with BCG vaccination.
We report a case of a pityriasis rosea-like eruption in a 12-year-old boy several days following BCG vaccination. It is suggested that the BCG vaccination be included in the etiology of pityriasis rosea-like eruptions.
Allergic vasculitis induced by hydrochlorothiazide: confirmation by mast cell degranulation test.
A case of allergic vasculitis of the skin following long-term treatment with hydrochlorothiazide is described. The etiopathogenic role of hydrochlorothiazide is strongly suggested by clinical evidence. The positive mast cell degranulation test to hydrochlorothiazide suggests the possible role of immunological in vitro tests in the diagnosis of drug eruption.
Immunologic studies in Darier's disease.
Humoral and cellular immunity were evaluated in 10 patients with Darier's disease. The mean levels of serum immunoglobulins, serum complement, peripheral macrophages, and peripheral B and T lymphocytes were within normal limits. Secretory IgA was present in all patients studied. Skin tests for delayed hypersensitivity revealed complete anergy in one of the eight patients tested. Lymphocyte transformation tests revealed statistically significant enhanced responsiveness to both PHA and ConA mitogens in several concentrations studied. These findings may suggest either the existence of alterations in immunoregulation of lymphocyte subpopulations in Darier's disease or may be limited to alterations in membrane functions of certain lymphocyte subpopulations which can be detected only in vitro. The role that such immunologic aberrations may play in the pathogenesis of Darier's disease is still obscure.
Protective effect of vitamins against trichothecene toxicity towards Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
Several trichothecene mycotoxins were shown to inhibit the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This effect was most pronounced with the macrocyclic trichothecenes, especially verrucarin A. Much less growth inhibition was observed with T-2 toxin. Verrucarol, diacetoxyscirpenol, acetyl T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, T-2 tetraol and neosolaniol were inactive at a concentration of 75 micrograms of toxin per disc. Incubation of S. cerevisiae with verrucarin A together with vitamins resulted in a decrease in toxicity. Pyridoxine-HCl, Ca-pantothenate, thiamine-HCl and alpha-tocopheryl acetate were amongst the most potent of the vitamins tested which reversed growth inhibition, overcoming the inhibitory potential of the toxins.
[Leser-Trélat sign in adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon--a rare clinical picture].
We report on a 75-year-old man showing the very rare association of Leser-Trélat's sign and adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. Our case is the second one reported so far.

The appearance of macrophage migration-inhibition factor in drug reactions.
Drug-induced adverse reactions were suspected in 2030 patients with known exposure to 243 different drugs. A modified direct macrophage migration-inhibition factor (MIF) test for the different drugs was carried out on blood samples from these patients. There was a positive MIF response toward one or more of the suspected drugs in 53.4% of the patients as compared to 4.9% of the control group; 155 of the 243 drugs elicited a positive MIF response. The percentage of positive responses for each particular drug was not related to the number of patients tested, reflecting the variability in specific immunogenicity of the different drugs. The high percentage of positive MIF reactions in relation to the clinical diagnosis suggests that this test can be a useful aid in the detection of the offending drug in cases of suspected drug-induced reactions.
Transformation of lymphocytoma cutis into a malignant lymphoma in association with the sign of Leser-Trélat.
A patient is described in whom transformation of lymphocytoma cutis (LC) into malignant lymphoma, diffuse, mixed small and large lymphocytes, occurred in association with the sign of Leser-Trélat (LT), which is a marker for internal malignancy. To the best of our knowledge, such an association has not been reported previously.

Lichenoid eruption due to hydrochlorothiazide. Diagnostic aid of macrophage migration inhibition factor (MIF) test.
The case of a lichenoid photosensitive eruption induced by hydrochlorothiazide is described. The macrophage migration inhibition factor test identified hydrochlorothiazide as the offending drug out of the several suspected drugs taken by the patient. It is suggested that an allergic reaction towards hydrochlorothiazide was involved in the development of the photosensitive lichenoid eruption in this case.

Cowden's disease in three siblings: electron-microscope and immunological studies.
Cowden's disease was diagnosed in three siblings (two sisters and a brother) in a Jewish Israeli family of Yemenite origin. The typical mucocutaneous lesions of the disease were present in all three cases. There were hamartomas involving other body systems, including euthyroid multinodular goiter (in all 3 cases), gastrointestinal polyposis (in 2 cases) and hemangioma (in one case). Developmental anomalies were found in all 3 cases. Histological examination of mucocutaneous lesions was in accordance with previous descriptions, including the findings compatible with trichilemmoma observed in cutaneous facial papules. Extensive electron-microscope studies of these facial lesions yielded no evidence of viral particles. Immunological studies, carried out mainly in two cases, revealed a decrease in complement level in the serum and impairment of T cell function.

Solcoderm in the treatment of solar and seborrheic keratoses.
Solcoderm treatment was applied to 46 patients with solar keratosis and 40 with seborrheic keratosis. Evaluation at regular follow-up over a 10-week period showed disappearance of the lesions without any remnant in most cases. Treatment was found to be effective, convenient, and with essentially no side effects.
