Changes in primate Pacinian corpuscles following volar pad excision and skin grafting. A preliminary report.

Human fingertip avulsion injuries were simulated by excising volar digital pads in stump-tailed monkeys. Half the defects were covered with split-skin grafts from the forearm, and half with full-thickness grafts of fingertip skin. Innervated pacinian corpuscles were found in the center of these grafts 3 months after the operation. The site of origin of these corpuscles is undefined. Denervation and devascularization of pacinian corpuscles resulted in alterations of their gross architecture, size, and innervation. The possibility exists that these alterations result from a dynamic adaptation of pacinian corpuscles to environmental stress.

Compression treatment of hemangiomas.

Compression therapy appears to be a safe and effective modality for treating involuting and non-involuting hemangiomas. Compression may induce earlier mature resolution in involuting hemangiomas, and may reduce the size of non-involuting hemangiomas--at least temporarily.

Surgical treatment of facial nerve involvement caused by leprosy.

Complete and partial nerve paralysis can result from leprosy. The latter is more prevalent and results in lagophthalmos and corneal hypoesthesia. The former is characterized by loss of facial expression, deviation of the face to the nonparalyzed side, difficulty in chewing, and drooling, in addition to lagophthalmos and corneal hypoesthesia. Affected patients are at risk to develop blindness, as well as suffering social and economic deprivation because of the effects of facial nerve paralysis. Prevention of blindness and amelioration of the latter were successfully achieved by muscle transfer procedures, temporalis transfer to the eyelid, and masseter transfer to the mouth and nasolabial fold in small, minimally equipped hospitals in Africa.

Injuries from rotary power lawnmowers.

Injuries from power lawnmowers most frequently involve the toes or the foot. The most common injury is caused by an extremity being caught in the moving parts of the machine. The greatest injury is to the skin and soft tissue by degloving or avulsion. Most of these injuries, especially those which occur to children who are passengers on self-propelled mowers, are preventable by observance of simple precautions.

Breast reconstruction after radical mastectomy.

The loss of the female breast by mastectomy for treatment of carcinoma is frequently a depressing psychologic experience. While some women learn to cope with the loss, others do not despite the use of specially constructed brassieres. Adaptations of implantation materials and basic plastic surgical techniques are now available for selected postmastectomy patients. These can be useful in modifying the altered body image of the patient who has lost her breast.
