A 1-year-and 4-month-old girl with giant choroid plesux carcinoma was reported from a viewpoint of surgical treatment. As this tumor develops in the ventricular system, rapid deterioration of the general condition due to marked intracranial hypertention is seen especially in children. Therefore, the first aid of the surgical treatment is the control of the intracranial pressure by continuous ventricular drainage in an attempt to improve the general condition of the patient. Because the tumor is very bloody, applying of the temporary clip on the feeding artery such as the anterior choroidal artery should be recommended prior to the dissection of the tumor during surgery.
Proton correlation nuclear magnetic resonance has been used to investigate anaerobic metabolism of glucose in Escherichia coli cells. The time course of the concentrations of six metabolites (ethanol, lactate, acetate, pyruvate, succinate, and formate) has been followed at the very early state of fermentation, and used to discuss dynamical aspects of the mixed-acid fermentation of glucose by E. coli.

Acute toxicity studies in labetalol were performed using mice, rats and rabbits, An oral administration of labetalol produced an increase in salivary secretion due to local irritation. Death followed convulsions by large doses of labetalol. Pathological examinations suggested that the cause of death by labetalol was circulatory disturbances due to the damage of heart muscles and a subsequent respiratory paralysis. Parenteral LD50 showed almost the same values among mice (50 mg/kg iv, 117 mg/kg ip), rats (66 mg/kg iv, 115 mg/kg ip) and rabbits (43 mg/kg iv). However, species difference was seen in oral LD50 values which were enormously large as compared with iv LD50 values.

We report two cases of high shunt dependency, which were first thought to be shunt independent arrested hydrocephalus. Though their shunt systems didn't seem to work, symptoms of rapid increasing intracranial pressure were observed after obstruction or replacement of shunt tube. Their ventricles looked so small like a slit on CT scan and PVG that the apex of the ventricular tube were easily obstructed by a ventricle wall. This is the reason why we misjudged them to be shunt independent arrested hydrocephalus. The cause of slit-like ventricles was overflow of CSF fluid due to the low pressure valve and the siphon effect. In general, after the shunt operation, most of the cases with thickening of cerebral mantle show the shunt dependency. Especially the cases showing rapid and marked thickening of the cerebral mantle are highly shunt dependent. Therefore, we must observe such cases carefully, in which the ventricle becomes small. Short interval follow-ups by CT scan after the shunt operation are quite necessary in order to observe the ventricle size. Easy and reliable judging method to know whether the shunt system is working or not is required to be developed.

Strain differences in the antibody response to human IgG (HGG) were observed when aggregated HGG was injected intravenously. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administered subsequently markedly enhanced the antibody response to HGG in low responder C57BL/6 mice as compared with that in high responder DDD, C3H/He or (C57BL/6 X DDD)F1 mice. Aggregate-free preparation of HGG at a dose of 0.5 mg induced immunological tolerance in all strains of mice tested. LPS injected subsequently converted tolerogenic, aggregate-free HGG into immunogen in DDD mice but not in C57BL/6 mice. To determine the correlation between adjuvanticity and mitogenicity of LPS, spleen cells from normal mice were cultured in the presence of LPS and 3H-thymidine uptake was measured. Spleen cells of DDD mice incorporated three times as much 3H-thymidine as those of C57BL/6 mice. There seems no strong correlation between both activities of LPS. The data obtained are discussed in terms of strain differences in the macrophage function for processing the antigen.

A trisomic lymphoblastoid cell line derived from the peripheral blood of a patient with Down's syndrome was sequentially analyzed for chromosome constitution for 16.5 months of continuous culture in vitro. The cell line was found to maintain a modal chromosome number of 47 with trisomy 21. Parallel studies of modal chromosomes before and after banding procedures revealed no structural abnormalities except trisomy 21.
Mice were rendered tolerant to bovine serum albumin (BSA) by means of cyclophosphamide. The effect of immunization with sulphanilated BSA with different degrees of hapten conjugation on this tolerant state was examined. It was shown that the tolerant state was readily terminated with sulphanilated BSA with a low degree of chemical modification. Specificities of antibodies produced in response to sulphanilated BSA were tested by absorption and PHA inhibition test, demonstrating that there were antibodies directed to new antigenic determinant(s) on sulphanilate BSA as well as those reacting with unmodified BSA. To explore the cellular mechanism of termination, lethally irradiated syngeneic mice were reconstituted with thymus-derived cells (T cells) together with bone marrow-derived cells (B cells) from either normal mice or mice rendered tolerant to BSA, and were immunized with BSA or sulphanilate BSA. Tolerance termination was clearly observed in the recipient mice reconstituted with tolerant T cells plus normal B cells. From these experimental data, it was proposed that the termination was effected by means of the co-operation of the T-cell population tolerant to BSA but capable of responding to new antigenic determinant(s) on sulphanilated BSA, with non-tolerant B cells responsive to BSA.

Subacute toxicity of solvent adjuvant, alphadolone acetate and solvent, 20 per cent Cremophor solution contained in CT-1341 was studied by using rats of both sexes. Alphadolone acetate and Cremophor solution were intraperitoneally injected every day for a period of one month. Total rats tolerated to daily administration of 60 mg/kg of alphadolone acetate or of 20 ml/kg of 20 per cent Cremophor solution, without showing significant changes in body weight curves and food intake. No change was observed in blood cells and in biochemical data of blood and urine as compared with control. Rats subjected to daily administration of 60 mg/kg of alphadolone acetate presented slight patho-histological changes such as swelling of cells of the liver and kidneys, and also cell infiltration of pericapillary tissues of the lung.
