Ipsilateral ureteroureterostomy combined with ureteral reimplantation for treatment of disease in both ureters in a child with complete ureteral duplication.

Recurrent urinary tract infection was seen in a 3-year-old girl with a ureterocele at the lower end of the upper segment ureter and reflux into the lower segment ureter of a duplicated kidney on the left side. We combined ipsilateral ureteroureterostomy (end-to-side anastomosis) with reimplantation of the host, single ureter into the bladder distal to the anastomosis to reduce dilatation, correct the reflux and keep the patient free of infection without medication.

Extravesical ureteral ectopia in male patients.

In male patients with extravesical ureteral ectopia the ectopic orifice does not cause urinary incontinence and the diagnosis is often delayed. We describe our experience with 12 male patients who had extravesical ureteral ectopia. According to the embryologic phenomena leading to such anomalies we have classified them into mesonephric ductal ectopia and urogenital sinus ectopia. Distinctive clinical and radiologic features of these 2 types of ureteral ectopia are discussed. Guide lines to surgical therapy are based upon the type of ectopia, function of the affected kidney or renal segment and whether a single or duplicated ureteral system is affected.

Lysozyme in Schwartz and Moloney virus-induced lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Studies have been made on lysozyme in serum and tissue homogenates in normal and leukaemic mice. An increase in serum lysozyme level occurred in mice bearing both strains of leukaemia as compared to the normal counterparts. Moreover, the elevated enzyme levels seem to be related to the rise in neutrophils in peripheral blood. In the spleen and kidney of leukaemic mice, the lysozyme level was found to be lower than in the normals, while the enzyme level remained more or less unaltered in the liver. The findings are discussed in relation to other reports in the literature.

Renal preservation with inosine.

Isosine improved post-transplantation function of canine kidneys subjected to thirty minutes of normothermic ischemia followed by flushing and twenty-four-hour cold storage. Inosine was not able to improve renal preservation when cold storage was extended to forty-eight hours after thirty minutes of normothermic ischemia.

Peyronie's disease: excision and autografting with tunica vaginalis.

Surgical excision of the indurated penile plaque followed by grafting with tunica vaginalis from the testes resulted in satisfactory correction of phallic deformity in 6 patients with sexually disabling chordee owing to Peyronie's disease. In 2 other patients impotence associated with a painful plaque was treated by excision and grafting followed by insertion of a penile prosthesis. The parietal layer of tunica vaginalis has proved to be an ideal substitute of tunica albuginea of the penis and has caused neither shrinkage nor bulging at the graft site.

Malignant pheochromocytoma of the bladder.

A review of malignant pheochromocytoma of the bladder is presented with an illustrative case, emphasizing the importance of preoperative localization and an extirpative surgical approach for such patients. Since histologic criteria of malignancy in phoechromocytomas have not yet been established all of these patiets warrant a thorough intraoperative search and long-term postoperative followup for possible metastases.

Apexification in a nonvital tooth by control of infection.

Incomplete formation of roots in permanent dentition because of death of the pulps is fairly common. Various pastes are used in apexification procedures. It has been suggested that minimum mechanical intervention and removal of infection alone may be sufficient. A case is reported in which this was observed.
