Persistence in nonequilibrium surface growth.

Persistence probabilities of the interface height in ( 1+1 ) - and ( 2+1 ) -dimensional atomistic, solid-on-solid, stochastic models of surface growth are studied using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, with emphasis on models that belong to the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) universality class. Both the initial transient and the long-time steady-state regimes are investigated. We show that for growth models in the MBE universality class, the nonlinearity of the underlying dynamical equation is clearly reflected in the difference between the measured values of the positive and negative persistence exponents in both transient and steady-state regimes. For the MBE universality class, the positive and negative persistence exponents in the steady-state are found to be theta(S)(+) =0.66+/-0.02 and theta(S)(-) =0.78+/-0.02, respectively, in ( 1+1 ) dimensions, and theta(S)(+) =0.76+/-0.02 and theta(S)(-) =0.85+/-0.02, respectively, in ( 2+1 ) dimensions. The noise reduction technique is applied on some of the ( 1+1 ) -dimensional models in order to obtain accurate values of the persistence exponents. We show analytically that a relation between the steady-state persistence exponent and the dynamic growth exponent, found earlier to be valid for linear models, should be satisfied by the smaller of the two steady-state persistence exponents in the nonlinear models. Our numerical results for the persistence exponents are consistent with this prediction. We also find that the steady-state persistence exponents can be obtained from simulations over times that are much shorter than that required for the interface to reach the steady state. The dependence of the persistence probability on the system size and the sampling time is shown to be described by a simple scaling form.

Spatial persistence and survival probabilities for fluctuating interfaces.

We report the results of numerical investigations of the steady-state (SS) and finite-initial-conditions (FIC) spatial persistence and survival probabilities for (1+1) -dimensional interfaces with dynamics governed by the nonlinear Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and the linear Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) equation with both white (uncorrelated) and colored (spatially correlated) noise. We study the effects of a finite sampling distance on the measured spatial persistence probability and show that both SS and FIC persistence probabilities exhibit simple scaling behavior as a function of the system size and the sampling distance. Analytical expressions for the exponents associated with the power-law decay of SS and FIC spatial persistence probabilities of the EW equation with power-law correlated noise are established and numerically verified.

Generalized survival in equilibrium step fluctuations.

We investigate the dynamics of a generalized survival probability S(t,R) defined with respect to an arbitrary reference level R (rather than the average) in equilibrium step fluctuations. The exponential decay at large time scales of the generalized survival probability is numerically analyzed. S(t,R) is shown to exhibit simple scaling behavior as a function of system size L, sampling time deltat, and the reference level R. The generalized survival time scale tau(s) (R) associated with S(t,R) is shown to decay exponentially as a function of R.

Griffiths phase in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

We study the effects of disorder in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic transition in a diluted magnetic semiconductor in the strongly localized regime. We derive an effective polaron Hamiltonian, which leads to the Griffiths phase above the ferromagnetic transition point. The Griffiths-McCoy effects yield nonperturbative contributions to the dynamic susceptibility. We explicitly derive the long-time susceptibility, which has a pseudoscaling form, with the dynamic critical exponent being expressed through the percolation indices.

Disordered RKKY lattice mean field theory for ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

We develop a lattice mean field theory for ferromagnetic ordering in diluted magnetic semiconductors by taking into account the spatial fluctuations associated with random disorder in the magnetic impurity locations and the finite mean free path associated with low carrier mobilities. Assuming a carrier-mediated indirect RKKY exchange interaction among the magnetic impurities, we find substantial deviation from the extensively used continuum Zener model Weiss mean field predictions. Our theory allows accurate analytic predictions for Tc and provides simple explanations for a number of observed anomalies, including the non-Brillouin function magnetization curves, the suppressed low-temperature magnetization saturation, and the dependence of Tc on conductivity.

Survival in equilibrium step fluctuations.

We report the results of analytic and numerical investigations of the time scale of survival or non-zero-crossing probability S(t) in equilibrium step fluctuations described by Langevin equations appropriate for attachment/detachment and edge-diffusion limited kinetics. An exact relation between long-time behaviors of the survival probability and the autocorrelation function is established and numerically verified. S(t) is shown to exhibit a simple scaling behavior as a function of system size and sampling time. Our theoretical results are in agreement with those obtained from an analysis of experimental dynamical scanning tunneling microscopy data on step fluctuations on Al/Si(111) and Ag(111) surfaces.

Pseudospin quantum computation in semiconductor nanostructures.

We theoretically show that spontaneously interlayer-coherent bilayer quantum Hall droplets should allow robust and fault-tolerant pseudospin quantum computation in semiconductor nanostructures with voltage-tuned external gates providing qubit control and a quantum Ising Hamiltonian providing qubit entanglement. Using a spin-boson model, we estimate decoherence to be small (approximately 10(-5)).

Infinite family of persistence exponents for interface fluctuations.

We show experimentally and theoretically that the persistence of large deviations in equilibrium step fluctuations is characterized by an infinite family of independent exponents. These exponents are obtained by carefully analyzing dynamical experimental images of Al/Si(111) and Ag(111) equilibrium steps fluctuating at high (970 K) and low (320 K) temperatures, respectively, and by quantitatively interpreting our observations on the basis of the corresponding coarse-grained discrete and continuum theoretical models for thermal surface step fluctuations under attachment/detachment ("high-temperature") and edge-diffusion limited kinetics ("low-temperature"), respectively.

High temperature ferromagnetism with a giant magnetic moment in transparent co-doped SnO(2-delta).

The occurrence of room temperature ferromagnetism is demonstrated in pulsed laser deposited thin films of Sn(1-x)Co(x)O(2-delta) (x<0.3). Interestingly, films of Sn(0.95)Co(0.05)O(2-delta) grown on R-plane sapphire not only exhibit ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature close to 650 K, but also a giant magnetic moment of 7.5+/-0.5 micro(B)/Co, not yet reported in any diluted magnetic semiconductor system. The films are semiconducting and optically highly transparent.

Even-odd effect in spontaneously coherent bilayer quantum Hall droplets.

Using exact diagonalization in the disk geometry we predict a novel even-odd effect in the Coulomb-blockade spectra of vertically coupled double quantum dots under an external magnetic field. The even-odd effect in the tunneling conductance is a direct manifestation of spontaneous interlayer phase coherence, and is similar to the even-odd resonance in the Cooper pair box problem in mesoscopic superconducting grains. Coherent fluctuations in the number of Cooper pairs in superconductors are analogous to the fluctuations in the relative number difference between the two layers in quantum Hall droplets.

Frictional drag in dilute bilayer 2D hole systems.

We develop a theory for frictional drag between two 2D hole layers in a dilute bilayer GaAs hole system, including effects of hole-hole and hole-phonon interactions. Our calculations suggest significant enhancement of hole drag transresistivity over the corresponding electron drag results. This enhancement originates from the exchange induced renormalization of the single-layer compressibility and the strong dependence of single-layer conductivity on density. We also address the effect of hole-phonon interaction on the drag temperature dependence. Our calculated results are in reasonable quantitative agreement with recent experimental observations.

Disentangling the exchange coupling of entangled donors in the Si quantum computer architecture.

We develop a theory for micro-Raman scattering by single and coupled two-donor states in silicon. We find the Raman spectra to have significant dependence on the donor exchange splitting and the relative spatial positions of the two-donor sites. In particular, we establish a strong correlation between the temperature dependence of the Raman peak intensity and the interdonor exchange coupling. Micro-Raman scattering can therefore potentially become a powerful tool to measure interqubit coupling in the development of a Si quantum computer architecture.

Resistivity of dilute 2D electrons in an undoped GaAs heterostructure.

We report resistivity measurements from 0.03 to 10 K in a dilute high mobility 2D electron system. Using an undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in a gated field-effect transistor geometry, a wide range of densities, 0.16 x 10(10) to 7.5 x 10(10) cm(-2), are explored. For high densities, the results are quantitatively shown to be due to scattering by acoustic phonons and impurities. In an intermediate range of densities, a peak in the resistivity is observed for temperatures below 1 K. This nonmonotonic resistivity can be understood by considering the known scattering mechanisms of phonons, bulk, and interface ionized impurities. Still lower densities appear insulating to the lowest temperature measured.

Layer-by-layer epitaxy in limited mobility nonequilibrium models of surface growth.

We study, using noise-reduction techniques, layer-by-layer epitaxial growth in limited mobility solid-on-solid nonequilibrium surface growth models, which have been introduced in the context of kinetic surface roughening in ideal molecular beam epitaxy. Multiple hit noise reduction and long surface diffusion length lead to qualitatively similar layer-by-layer epitaxy in (1+1)- and (2+1)-dimensional limited mobility growth simulations. We discuss the dynamic scaling characteristics connecting the transient layer-by-layer growth regime with the asymptotic kinetically rough growth regime.

Experimental persistence probability for fluctuating steps.

The persistence behavior for fluctuating steps on the Si(111)-(sqrt[3]xsqrt[3])R30 degrees -Al surface was determined by analyzing time-dependent STM images for temperatures between 770 and 970 K. Using the standard persistence definition, the measured persistence probability displays power-law decay with an exponent of theta=0.77+/-0.03. This is consistent with the value of theta=3/4 predicted for attachment-detachment limited step kinetics. If the persistence analysis is carried out in terms of return to a fixed-reference position, the measured probability decays exponentially. Numerical studies of the Langevin equation used to model step motion corroborate the experimental observations.

Polaron percolation in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

We theoretically study the development of spontaneous magnetization in diluted magnetic semiconductors as arising from a percolation of bound magnetic polarons. Within the framework of a generalized percolation theory we derive analytic expressions for the Curie temperature and the magnetization in the limit of low carrier density, obtaining excellent quantitative agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results and good qualitative agreement with experimental results.

Universality class of discrete solid-on-solid limited mobility nonequilibrium growth models for kinetic surface roughening.

We investigate, using the noise reduction technique, the asymptotic universality class of the well-studied nonequilibrium limited mobility atomistic solid-on-solid surface growth models introduced by Wolf and Villain (WV) and Das Sarma and Tamborenea (DT) in the context of kinetic surface roughening in ideal molecular beam epitaxy. We find essentially all the earlier conclusions regarding the universality class of DT and WV models to be severely hampered by slow crossover and extremely long-lived transient effects. We identify the correct asymptotic universality class(es) that differs from earlier conclusions in several instances.

Spin-polarized transport in inhomogeneous magnetic semiconductors: theory of magnetic/nonmagnetic p-n junctions.

A theory of spin-polarized transport in inhomogeneous magnetic semiconductors is developed and applied to magnetic/nonmagnetic p-n junctions. Several phenomena with possible spintronic applications are predicted, including spin-voltaic effect, spin valve effect, exponential and giant magnetoresistance. It is demonstrated that only nonequilibrium spin can be injected across the space-charge region of a p-n junction, so that there is no spin injection (or extraction) at low bias.
