Mandibular body fractures in young children are uncommon, yet their treatment and management often present several difficulties. The presence of developing dental follicles may lead to irregular fracture lines and precludes the use of intraosseus wiring. In addition, treatment of fractures in children of this age requires a technique that limits the number of separate procedures that they are subjected to. The technique outlined below for the treatment of mandibular body fractures in young children, uses a plastic impression tray as a splint and provides a simple means for their reduction and fixation.
Five focal epithelial hyperplasia (FEH) specimens from four patients were examined by Southern blot hybridization analysis to determine the specific human papillomavirus (HPV) types present. The histomorphologic features of these specimens were also evaluated and a broad variety of changes including koilocytes, mitosoid cells, ballooning cells and cells showing individual cell keratinization were noted. FEH lesions from the three patients sharing a familial relationship demonstrated HPV DNA sequences that were either the prototype HPV-13 or a very closely related HPV-13 subtype. These patients also showed similar clinical features. Lesional tissue from the other patient was found to harbor HPV DNA sequences similar to HPV-32. In view of these findings it is suggested that these specific HPV types are associated with the characteristic FEH histomorphology described.

A new technique for removal of a congenital lateral upper lip fistula is described, using an intra-oral approach. Previous reports of removal of such a congenital malformation have used an extra-oral approach. The technique described allows for excellent visualization of the fistula without cutaneous lip incision. Using this approach, good aesthetic results and complete removal of the fistula and associated mucous glands can be obtained.
A case of angioblastic meningioma is presented where the presenting symptom was severe TM pain. Theories based on a "referred pain" mechanism, vascular traction, or both, are discussed and suggested as an explanation.

A rare case of benign osteoblastoma of the mandible, with clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings, is reported. The difference between benign osteoblastoma and osteoid osteoma is discussed, since these lesions share similar features that are seen in the case presented. It is suggested that both lesions should be diagnosed as one entity.

A study was made of a series of 302 consecutive cases of localized hyperplastic lesions of the gingiva (epulides). The lesions were classified into five groups: pyogenic granuloma, calcifying fibroblastic granuloma, fibrous hyperplasia, peripheral giant cell granuloma and denture hyperplasia. The study indicates that there are some differences in age and sex distribution as well as in location between the different histological groups. Pyogenic granuloma was found to be the most common lesion on the gingiva. Pyogenic granuloma and calcifying fibroblastic granuloma occur in younger patients more often than fibrous hyperplasia, and thus may represent a stage in the development of fibrous hyperplasia. Denture hyperplasia occurs predominantly in females and it is suggested that its formation may be affected by hormonal alterations in the menopause.
Four hundred twenty-three specimens of inflammatory hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity were examined for changes in the epithelium. Amorphic eosinophilic material was found in the superficial layers of the epithelium in 12 per cent of the cases. The incidence and severity of the changes were related to the intensity of the inflammatory reaction in the underlying tissue. Histochemically, the material contained protein, disulfide and sulfhydryl groups, tryptophan, and carbohydrate.
Saliva coating all oral surfaces has a buffering capacity that neutralizes bacterial and cariogenic acids. The aim of our study was to determine the surface pH in different regions of the oral cavity in healthy volunteers and in patients with diseases affecting the oral mucosa. Oral pH was measured with a flat glass electrode on the anterior third of the ventral surface of the tongue, middle hard palate, buccal mucosa and inner lips in 32 healthy volunteers, 12 patients with Behçet's disease, 23 patients with oral lichen planus, and 11 patients with burning mouth syndrome. The present study showed that there was an uneven distribution of oral surface pH. The palate had a higher pH than most other sites in all groups, and in patients with lichen planus, the palate pH was higher than that in healthy controls. Those with dentures had lower pH values in the hard palate than dentate patients. The relatively high pH in the palate region in all patient groups as well as healthy volunteers needs to be further studied to clarify its mechanisms and clinical relevance.

We present an unusual case of a large metallic object penetrating the orbital floor. Early exploration and extirpation of the foreign body improved the restricted eye movements. The treatment and complications of orbital foreign bodies are discussed.
