Study of venous segments in the spleens of buffalo and dog.

By preparing the corrosion cast of the splenic vein and its intrasplenic tree, venous segments have been observed in the spleens of buffalo and dog. The buffalo spleen showed the presence of two venous segments (a dorsal and a ventral) in 85% of cases and three (a dorsal, an intermediate and a ventral) in 15% of cases. The spleen of the dog revealed only two venous segments (a dorsal and a ventral) in all the specimens. The results are compared with descriptions available in the literature.

Pacemaker catheter-induced systolic murmur.

Extracardiac sounds secondary to cardiac pacing are well known, but the murmurs originating in the heart after pacemaker insertion are rare. A patient who developed musical systolic murmur following temporary transvenous endocardial pacemaker insertion is described. It is concluded that the murmur was produced by vibrations caused by the pacing catheter and the tricuspid valve or some other intracardiac structure.

Thyroid function in adrenaline-induced changes in the intermediary metabolism of the chequered water-snake (Natrix piscator).

Injection of adrenaline in ten daily doses of 100 micrograms each into the chequered water-snake, Natrix piscator, stimulated glycogenolysis and lipid esterification in the liver and lipolysis in the adipose tissue of control snakes. In both thyroidectomized and control snakes plasma protein levels decreased significantly after hormone treatment, although there was no change in concentrations of muscle glycogen and plasma lactic acid. In thyroidectomized snakes, the hormone stimulated oxidation of the free fatty acids but had no significant effect on the synthesis of the triglycerides. It is suggested that in these snakes the presence of the thyroid hormones is a prerequisite for the response of most of the metabolic processes to adrenaline.

Effect of dapsone on blood lactic and pyruvic acids in leprosy.

The effect of leprosy and dapsone (DDS) on the basal levels of blood lactic and pyruvic acids has been studied. In untreated tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy patients both of the acids were found to be significantly raised. The rise in lactic acid was relatively more in tuberculoid patients; whereas pyruvic was relatively more elevated in lepromatous cases. Both the acids showed a tendency to increase with the duration of the disease in lepromatous leprosy. Statistically no significant differences were observed in lactic acid levels between untreated and treated cases of both forms of leprosy, suggesting that DDS was not effective in controlling the conditions responsible for the increased lactic acid. On the other hand, pyruvic acid showed a further increase in cases who were on DDS therapy, particularly in lepromatous cases. This indicated that DDS affects pyruvic acid metabolism. Whether DDS disturbs the normal degradative pathway of pyruvic acid or affects pathways of pyruvic acid production is not clear.

Investigation of lymphocyte subpopulations and hypersensitivity skin tests during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

Cell-mediated immune responses were examined during the menstrual cycle of 10 healthy females and in 90 pregnant females, 10 for each month of gestation, and in 10 females 2--4 weeks after normal delivery. Lymphocytes and their subpopulations and PPD hypersensitivity skin tests were investigated. The lymphocyte subpopulation T-cells showed statistically significant depression at the time of ovulation (P less than 0.01) and during the entire period of gestation (P less than 0.001) with recovery in the post-partum period. There was borderline PPD skin response during pregnancy which became positive after parturition. These changes were demonstrated to be specific to conception but the exact mechanism of the T-cell depression is not known. There was a corresponding rise in the B-cell count.

Intrahepatic patterns of the biliary ducts in the chick liver (Gallus gallus domesticus).

In 40 chick livers intrahepatic ductal patterns have been studied after preparing the corrosion cast of the hepatic duct. Frequently hepatoenteric duct was formed by the union of left and right hepatic ducts (92.5%) and rarely by union of left dorsal, left ventral and right hepatic ducts (7.5%). The left lobe of the liver was drained by left dorsal, left ventral and left intermediate hepatic ducts and the right lobe by the right dorsal and right ventral hepatic ducts. The various patterns of their formation and their sites of drainage into the ductal system have been described in detail.
