50 corrosion casts of Chick portal vein were studied to observe the various intrahepatic patterns of portal vein. The liver was supplied by right and left portal veins. Each one entered the liver through separate hilus. The right lobe of the liver received its portal supply from 2 principal veins: a right dorsal and a right ventral. In addition to the above 2 principal veins 2 minor veins were also observed in majority of cases--one supplied the central region (68%) and other the ventral region (52%) of the right lobe. The left lobe of the liver received its portal blood through left dorsal, left ventral and left intermediate veins. The various sites of origin of the veins of the portal system have been described.
Sixty male patients with polar leprosy (33 lepromatous and 27 tuberculoid) were studied for the presence of antispermatozoal antibodies. Antibodies were detected by three different immunological tests. The sperm immobilization test was found to be the most sensitive. In lepromatous leprosy the incidence of these antibodies was higher than in tuberculoid cases. An increasing incidence of antispermatozoal antibodies was observed with the duration of the disease irrespective of the test employed for their detection. No correlation between the number of erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) reactions and the incidence of antibodies could be demonstrated.
The clinical angiographic, and available autopsy data of 32 patients with cardiomyopathy with cardiomegaly were reviewed. Twenty-six patients had alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Of these, 20 patients had patient coronary arteries, and 6 had significant occlusive coronary artery disease. Six patients denied any history of excessive alcohol intake, had significant occlusive coronary artery disease, and were grouped as ischemic cardiomyopathic. A total of 12 patients (37.5%) had significant occlusive coronary artery disease. The clinical separation of patients with cardiomegaly due to alcoholic cardiomyopathy from those with occlusive coronary artery disease is extremely difficult. Clinical parameters, including history of chest pain and presence of absence of abnormal Q waves on electrocardiograms, are of little value in individual cases. It seems likely that many patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy may present clinically and electrocardiographically as patients with silent occlusive coronary artery disease. This study underlines the importance of coronary angiography in making a precise diagnosis. The mortality rate during the 5-year follow-up period was 56%. The patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy with occlusive coronary artery disease carried the worst prognosis. The outlook for patients with cardiomyopathy and cardiomegaly becomes grave once they develop left ventricular end diastolic pressure over 24 mm Hg.

Renal functional status was evaluated in 122 patients with lepromatous leprosy. Renal functions were found to be markedly impaired in patients with erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) in the active or quiescent phases. Although uncomplicated lepromatous leprosy patients did show significant renal impairment as compared to healthy controls, the degree of impairment was less than that of the reactive cases. Diminished endogenous creatinine clearance and proteinuria were the common abnormalities detected. Serum creatinine was significantly increased only in reactive cases. Blood urea was found to be marginally increased in a few patients although not to a statistically significant degree. Renal involvement did not bear any relation to the duration of illness or to the Bacteriological Index.
Twenty one patients of lepromatous leprosy were investigated for evidence of renal diseases. Histological lesions were observed in 76 percent cases. Sixty two percent of the cases showed a proliferative type of glomerulonephritis. Amyloidosis was present in 14 percent. The remaining 24 percent had either non-specific changes confined to renal tubules or were normal.
Sequential renal functions have been studied in eight patients of lepromatous leprosy during and after subsidence of erythema nodosum leprosum. The renal functions which were impaired during reaction were observed to improve during quiescent phase unless there were associated complications like amyloidosis. The possible mechanisms for altered renal functions during reactive phase of the disease have been discussed.

The patterns of hepatovenous segments in 95 human livers have been studied after preparing corrosion casts of the hepatic veins in 72 specimens and taking X-rays of 23 livers after injecting barium sulphate into the hepatic veins. Five hepatovenous segments were seen in every specimen: left, middle, right, paracaval and caudate. The sizes of corresponding hepatovenous segments were similar in 77.9% of livers; in the remainder increased or decreased size, at the expense of neighbouring segments, was observed.

Enzyme preparations of pig heart and Escherichia coli are shown to catalyze a NAD+- and CoASH-dependent oxidation of 2-keto-4-hydroxyglutarate. Several independent lines of evidence support the conclusion that this hydroxyketo acid is a substrate for the well known alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex of the citric acid cycle. The evidence includes (a) a constant ratio of specific activity values for the two substrates through several steps of purification, (b) identical elution profiles from a calcium phosphate gel-cellulose column and a constant ratio of specific activity toward the two substrates throughout the activity peak, (c) identical inactivation curves in controlled heat denaturation studies, (d) the same pH activity curves, (e) no effect on the oxidation of either keto acid by repeated freezing and thawing of dehydrogenase preparations, and (f) the same activity pattern when the E. coli complex is distributed into several fractions by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Additionally, the same cofactors are required for maximal activity and glyoxylate inhibits the oxidation of either substrate noncompetitively. Ferricyanide-linked oxidation of 2-keto-4-hydroxyglutarate yields malate as the product and a 1:2:1 stoichiometric relationship is obtained between the amount of hydroxyketo acid oxidized, ferricyanide reduced, and malate formed.
