Various cranial and facial measurements were taken on 300 adult skulls available in the Department of Anatomy, S. N. Medical College, Agra and the cranio facial indices were calculated. When the measurements were statistically analysed, we have found a positive correlation between the basion prosthion length and the maximum cranial length, maximum cranial breadth and the bizygomatic breadth, nasion prosthion length and basion bregmatic height, and the palatal breadth and palatal length. The regression line between the various pairs of parameters were also calculated and a regression formula derived.
A retrospective study of nine cases of fractured tracheostomy tubes presenting as foreign bodies in the tracheo-bronchial tree, seen over a period of about 8 years, has been made. The literature on this rare subject is reviewed. The presenting features, causes of failure of tracheostomy tubes and management of the problem are discussed. The causes of fracture were found to be repeated boiling, prolonged use, erosion by tracheo-bronchial secretions and manufacturing defects.
A protein with molecular mass of 67 kilodaltons is immunoprecipitated from in vitro translated products obtained from rabbit reticulocyte lysate primed with polyadenylated RNA from nitrate treated illuminated pea seedlings. This protein resembles the native nitrite reductase because of its competitive elimination when immunoprecipitation of in vitro translated products was carried out in the presence of cold unlabeled nitrite reductase or in vivo labeled pea leaf extract. This protein is of slightly higher molecular weight than that of the native nitrite reductase. Proteinaceous extracts from chloroplasts convert the in vitro product to the same molecular weight as the native peptide. The conversion appears to occur in two steps. Polyadenylated RNA from nitrate deficient plants or from nitrate-treated plants transferred to darkness do not support the synthesis of nitrite reductase. It is concluded that nitrate and light modulate the synthesis of the enzyme nitrite reductase by regulating the availability of mRNA for the enzyme.
The combined investigations of positive contrast myelography and computed tomographic (CT) myelography were performed on 53 consecutive children. Thirty-eight (72%) of these investigations were performed as a routine pre-operative procedure to identify occult spinal dysraphism in patients with childhood scoliosis; the remainder were because of the "orthopaedic syndrome", cervical radiculopathy, back pain and patients with clinical findings to suggest spinal dysraphism. In the 20 patients (38%) with idiopathic scoliosis, there was no case of spinal dysraphism and CT myelography provided no additional information to the myelogram. In the seven patients with spinal dysraphism the plain radiographic abnormalities identified were lumbar vertebral abnormalities (five), thoracic vertebral abnormalities (one), and sacral agenesis (one). Diastematomyelia was found in four patients, a low tethered cord and lipoma in two patients and a large lipoma in one patient. In all of these cases the myelogram indicated the intraspinal abnormalities; however, CT myelography provided more precise anatomical detail. We conclude that CT myelography is not indicated in the initial preoperative assessment of idiopathic scoliosis but should be reserved for patients with congenital or complicated scoliosis where the association with dysraphism is well recognised.

A recombinant plasmid which carried a 5 kb fragment of Vibrio harveyi DNA containing the luxA and luxB genes was mobilized from Escherichia coli into luminescence-deficient mutants of V. harveyi. The cloned genes complemented a temperature sensitive luciferase mutation, but failed to complement lesions in two different aldehyde deficient mutants. Expression of the cloned genes was not subject to autoinduction in either E. coli or in V. harveyi.
The association of hypoxemia and cardiac arrhythmias with fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) is known. The effects of various methods of inserting the bronchoscope on blood oxygen tensions, the true prevalence of arrhythmias, and the clinical significance of PaO2 and rhythm changes are poorly defined. Arterial blood gas values, oxygen saturation and cardiac arrhythmias detected by 24-hour Holter monitoring were compared in 20 male patients undergoing either transoral or transnasal FOB. No significant difference in oxygen saturation was found; however, PaO2 values fluctuated widely and unpredictably and were significantly higher in the eight patients in the transnasal FOB group. No life-threatening arrhythmias were induced during bronchoscopy; however, because of minor arrhythmias such as sinus tachycardia, the overall frequency of arrhythmias rose from 60% to 65%. The incidence of arrhythmias in this study was similar to that reported during pulmonary function testing.
We used a viral model to reexamine classical experiments showing that mice previously primed with a "carrier" molecule alone and then challenged with the carrier-hapten conjugate exhibited an enhanced antihapten antibody response. Mice were primed with live or UV-inactivated vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) Indiana (Ind) serotype with or without complete Freund's adjuvant. After challenge with VSV New Jersey (NJ), these mice developed a secondary-type IgG response, measured by antibody binding in an ELISA, against both VSV-Ind and VSV-NJ. The same result was found for the reciprocal experiments where mice were primed with VSV-NJ. Similarly, when mice were primed with live VSV, UV-inactivated VSV, or purified VSV glycoprotein G of Ind or NJ serotype and later were challenged with dinitrophenyl (N2ph)-conjugated, UV-inactivated VSV or with N2ph-conjugated G protein of either serotype, they exhibited a secondary-type anti-N2ph antibody response as demonstrated by the binding of IgG to dinitrophenylated bovine serum albumin measured by ELISA. In contrast, when neutralizing antibody responses were monitored, VSV-Ind-primed mice challenged with VSV-NJ developed a strictly primary type of anti-VSV-NJ response and vice versa. We conclude that preexistent helper T cells specific for shared carrier determinants do not improve virgin B-cell responses specific for "new," unique determinants that are the target for the biologically relevant neutralizing antibodies. These findings suggest that priming of B cells rather than of helper T cells may be of importance to induce protective immunity mediated by antibodies.
Three hundred ninety patients with suspected contact dermatitis to topical medicaments were patch tested with various commercially available antibacterial agents to evaluate the incidence of contact hypersensitivity. The common sensitizers were nitrofurazone, neomycin, oxytetracycline, cetrimide, and framycetin. The least common sensitizers were sodium fusidate, chlorhexidine hydrochloride, and gentian violet. Cross-sensitivity was observed between neomycin, framycetin, and gentamicin.

The arterial submucous plexus in 5 human duodena (1st 2.5 cm of duodenum) were studied by injecting India-ink. The submucous plexus was richly vascular, which excluded the possibility of the end arteries to be the causative factor in production of ulcers in this region. Perhaps, the ulcers in this region may be due to obstruction of blood flow caused by traction of an over filled stomach.

The lux A and lux B genes of Vibrio harveyi, encoding the alpha and beta subunits of bacterial luciferase, were cloned individually into Escherichia coli in two different compatible plasmids. Active luciferase was formed in an amount equal to that produced in cells carrying a plasmid with the cloned genes on a single fragment.
