[Immunological abnormalities in epileptic children treated with anticonvulsivant drugs (author's transl)].

Seric IgA, IgE and IgD; antinuclear antibodies and lymphocyte and eosinophil counts were studied in 61 epileptic children; 22 patients were treated with phenobarbital and 39 with hydantoine. The mean length of treatment was 12 months to phenobarbital and 23 to hydantoins. Seric IgA was deficient in 4/36 children taking hydantoins and only 1/20 receiving phenobarbital. IgE mean was increase in hydantoins treated patients and also IgD was found higher than normal in 6 patients. Only one case showed seric antinuclear antibodies but they disappeared with drug withdrawal. The lymphocyte count was normal but an important eosinophilia rise with treatment (phenobarbital or hydantoins). These immunological abnormalities were meanly found in idiopatic epilepsy. These suggest they are produced by anticonvulsivant drugs but also by an important constitutional factor. In this way immunology and epilepsy may be related.

Testing umbilical cords for funisitis due to Treponema pallidum infection, Bolivia.

To establish the frequency of necrotizing funisitis in congenital syphilis, we conducted a prospective descriptive study of maternal syphilis in Bolivia by testing 1,559 women at delivery with rapid plasma reagin (RPR). We examined umbilical cords of 66 infants whose mothers had positive RPR and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption tests. Histologic abnormalities were detected in 28 (42%) umbilical cords (seven [11%] had necrotizing funisitis with spirochetes; three [4%] had marked funisitis without necrosis; and 18 [27%] had mild funisitis), and 38 [58%] were normal. Of 22 umbilical cords of infants from mothers without syphilis (controls), only two (9%) showed mild funisitis; the others were normal. Testing umbilical cords by using immunohistochemistry is a research tool that can establish the frequency of funisitis due to Treponema pallidum infection.

[Evaluation of commercial equipment used in blood banks in Córdoba for the detection of anti-HTLV-I/II antibodies].

In order to assess the efficiency of currently used screening tests, Abbott HTLV-I/HTLV-II EIA, Vironostika HTLV-I/II Organon Teknika, Particle Agglutination (PA) assay Serodia Fujirebio Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) for HTLV-I/II antibody detection in blood donors samples, a panel of 100 sera from different blood banks of Córdoba city were studied. An "in house" indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) was used as reference test. The correlation rates were: 66% for Abbott HTLV-I/HTLV-II EIA, 97% for Vironostika HTLV-I/II Organon Teknika EIA and 99% for PA Serodia. Vironostika HTLV-I/II Organon Teknika EIA and PA Serodia assay proved to be more reliable for HTlV-I/II antibody screening in blood donors from Córdoba, yielding a very low rate of false positive results as compared with Abbot HTLV-I/HTLV-II EIA.

[Aging and neurodegeneration: molecular and cellular bases].

OBJECTIVE: A review about the possible cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging and related neurodegenerative diseases. DEVELOPMENT: The mechanisms involved in neuronal decrease, connectivity losses and glial reactivity, detected both in neurodegenerative (Alzheimer's disease) and physiological aging, are analyzed from the morphological and histological point of view to provide the morphofunctional base of the cognitive and intellectual alterations characterizing the senescence process. Taken together, these data are correlated to the possible genetical aspects implied in this process, reviewing the most relevant results on senescence and cellular death obtained from yeast, fruit fly and nematodes; besides this, a brief review of the molecular biology of gerontogenes was carried out, and the possible mechanisms inducing aging and neurodegenerative processes are analyzed according to the state-of-the-art related theories. Finally, cellular, biochemical and genetical data are correlated in the signal transduction way implied in the increase of the intracellular calcium level as the starting point of cell death. CONCLUSIONS: The main process implied in the neuronal cell death responsible for aging and the related neurodegenerative diseases are started by different agents such as the lacking of neurotrophic factors, hypoxia, hypoglycemia, excitotoxicity, and oxygen and nitrogen free radicals.

[Pathogenic considerations in systemic lupus erythematosus D.L.E. immunohistologic studies (author's transl)].

Immunohistochemical studies in the gust, skin and kidney of a systemic lupus erythematosus patient are presented. The results suggest that there is no digestive participation in the immunologic disturbances that the vascular and glomerular depositions are independent and that antibodies are present in the dermoepidermal junction which class is different and it does not correlate with circulating antinuclear antibodies.

[Modifications of phosphocalcic metabolism in patients treated with anticonvulsivants (author's transl)].

Differences in the seric values of Ca, P and alk. phosphatase before and after 12 to 18 months of anticonvulsant therapy in 45 patients are reported. They were significant for alk. phosphatase in patients under either barbiturates or barbiturates associated with hydantoin. For calcium they were significant in patients treated with barbiturate plus hydantoins and either one of these plus other drugs. It is assumed that supplementary vitamin D can be necessary in these group of patients.

[Corticosteroids in viral hepatitis (author's transl)].

138 cases of viral hepatitis were selected among 27,000 pediatric clinical records corresponding to the years 1965-75. The clinical course of patients receiving corticosteroids during the acute phase was compared to that of the remaining patients, and an increased number of prolonged course cases was observed. At the same time, more frequent evolution to either aggressive forms or cirrhosis is suggested. Therefore, the authors discourage the use of corticosteroids in the treatment of common viral hepatitis.

[Severe combined immunodeficiency with hypergamma-e eosinophilia, icthyosis and normal serum adenosin-deaminase (author's transl)].

A two months old girl whose parents and grand-parents were consanguineous, and a former brother died when eight months old with a similar clinical picture is studied. Our patient developed diarrhea at the age of fifteen days, and icthyosiform skin lesions when she was one month old. Enlarged lymph nodes were prominent. She died with severe lung and ear infection. No evidence of skeletal abnormalities were found. Eosinophil count was high (720-1,000/mm3), IgE was increased for age (760 u.u./ml.), but other immunoglobulins were very decreased or absent. T-cells were decreased and lymphocyte with Ig receptors were not detected. Phytohemagglutinin response was nul but complement was normal. Autopsy revealed typical lymphoid features of severe combined immunodeficiency. Pulmonary "Pneumocystis carinii" infection was not found. Seric adenosine-deaminase was normal and absence of hypouricemia suggested also a normal nucleoside-phosphorilase.
