Radioimmunoassay of substance P (SP)-like reactivity, using N alpha-tyrosyl-SP, was performed in plasma of psychotic patients. Schizophrenic patients under neuroleptic medication over 1 year, and those patients with organic brain disease showed a significant increase in immunoreactivity. The immunoreactivity in unmedicated schizophrenic patients just before treatment and in depressed patients, both bipolar and major, did not differ significantly from that of controls. The immunoreactivity in unmedicated schizophrenics was followed after medication for a maximum of 5 months. The reactivity decreased in five cases, and increased in three cases. No definite pattern could be discerned between changes in the immunoreactivity, the type of medication administered, and the resultant response to the therapy. Chlorpromazine injection caused no definite acute effect on the plasma level of SP-like immunoreactivity for 120 minutes. Electroconvulsive therapy increased the plasma level of SP-like immunoreactivity for 90 minutes in a male schizophrenic patient.
An L-form derived from halotolerant Staphylococcus aureus Tasaki was adapted to growth in a brain heart infusion medium without any supplemental osmotically protective solutes (360 mOsm/kg). This L-form had no chemically detectable peptidoglycan residues on its surface. Electron microscopic observations confirmed morphologically the absence of the structures and also of other osmotically protective polymers within or exterior to the cytoplasmic membrane. The osmotic stability and susceptibility to bacitracin, D-cycloserine, and vancomycin of the L-form adapted to growth in 360 mOsm osmotically unprotective medium was higher than that of the L-form grown in 1,950 mOsm supplemented with 4.5% NaCl. The adapted L-form tended to be more sensitive to almost all of the antibiotics examined, other than the inhibitors for cell wall-synthesis, than the original L-form strain requiring osmotic protection for growth. Chemical analysis of the membrane of the adapted L-form indicated 16.3% total lipids and 20.6% proteins by dry weight of the membrane, and it contained larger amounts of lipid phosphorus (20.0 microgram/mg).

Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and triacylglycerol were isolated from egg yolk of the Japanese quail. Fatty acid compositions at the two and three positions of glycerol in the glycerolipids were determined by stereospecific analysis employing phospholipase A2. The distribution of the total number of carbon atoms in the fatty acid moieties of triacylglycerol was also quantitated by high temperature gas liquid chromatography. The distribution of acyl groups in each of the positions of the phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and triacylglycerol was not random, and each position has a characteristic composition. The phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine had distinctive fatty acid distributions for position sn-2 of the triacylglycerol had a predominance of unsaturated fatty acids of which 18:1 (69.9%) was the major component. Position sn-3 contained 49.3% saturated fatty acids and was more saturated than position sn-1 by 8.1%. The experimentally determined distribution of the carbon numbers in triacyl glycerol deviated significantly from the distribution predicted by 1-random-2-random-3-random association of the fatty acids. The data suggest that in Japanese quail there is marked preferencial synthesis of some triacylglycerols.

1. Three components of quail ovalbumin were fractionated by gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography. 2. These were A1, A2, and A3, of which the major is A2. They contained phosphorus of 3, 2 and 1 residues, respectively. 3. The amino acid composition were higher in Lys, Asp, Ser, Thr and Gly, and lower in Arg, Glu and Ile than chicken ovalbumin. 4. The carbohydrate compositions were slightly higher in hexose and lower in hexosamine than chicken ovalbumin. 5. The molecular weight was determined to be 43,000, and the isoelectric point was pI 4.70.

750 cases of advanced gastric carcinoma were macroscopically and microscopically studied in relation with the 10 year survival rate. Most of the patients, 59.3% in female and 68.8% in male, belonged to the 5th and 6th decades. Macroscopically 44.1% of the cases were grouped in Borrmann III type, and secondly Early-Cancer Like Lesion, 26,6%. Histologically, in 510 cases out of 750 (68.0%) serosa was definitely broken by carcinoma cell nests and in 500 cases (66.7%) lymphnode metastasis was observed. The most frequent histological type was diffuse type, 44.9%, and secondly papillotubular type, 21.2%. 10 year survival rate of 516 cases, in which no residual cancer tissue was ascertained and the favorite prognosis could be expected was studied on various factors: Early-Cancer-Like-Lesion and Borrmann I & II types carcinoma, those cases in which the muscularis propria or serosa was preserved, those cases without lymphnode metastasis, and papillotubular or medullary tubular carcinomas showed a favorite prognosis in comparison with other types.
The effect of 4,4'-bis(beta-diethylaminoethoxy)alpha,beta-diethyldiphenylethane (DH) on lipid metabolism in the liver differed considerably in different animal species, humans, monkeys, and rats, because of differences in drug-metabolizing ability. Monkeys retain considerable drug-metabolizing ability as compared with humans, but the DH-hydroxylating activity in monkeys seems to be much lower than in rats. The hydroxyl derivative was the major substance which accumulated in rat liver following the administration of DH, while DH itself and its N-dealkylated substances accumulated in monkey liver. N-Dealkylated substances were also observed in human liver, but the amount was much smaller than in monkeys. Bis(monoacylglyceryl)phosphate (BMGP), which is characteristic of this kind of drug-induced lipidosis, did not increase as much in monkey liver as in human liver, but a marked increase in phosphatidyl inositol (PI) was observed in monkey liver during administration of DH. The concentration of acidic phospholipids (BMGP + PI) in liver showed a close correlation with the accumulation of the drug (DH + its metabolites), irrespective of species differences. Among subcellular particles isolated from a monkey liver following administration of DH, the crude mitochondrial fraction, including lysosomes, was richest in BMGP.
