A new type of spinal AVM is reported. The characteristics are as follows: All the patients are male over 50-years-old. Their symptoms are insiduous and progressive ischemic pattern. All the lesions locate at the thoracic and lumbar levels. Selective intercostal angiography shows a fistulous AVM adjacent to the intervertebral foramen fed by spinal dural branch and drain into tortuous veins on the spinal cord via radiculomedullary vein. No typical hair-pin configuration by radiculomedullary and spinal cord arteries contributes to the AVM. This type of spinal AVM must be distinguished from so-called singled coiled type spinal cord AVM since pathophysiological features presumably are different from each other; the former is "dural" on anatomical basis, whereas the latter is "pial". Embolization should be recommended as a first choice of treatment to spinal dural AVM.

A 46-year-old woman was transferred to our facility with the complaint of epigastric discomfort of more than four months duration. She had undergone partial gastrectomy with Billroth I anastomosis 19 years prior to the admission. An upper GI series revealed multiple, variously sized elevated lesions scattered over the remnant stomach. Fiberscopic examination showed the gastric mucosa replaced by several elevated lesions and giant fold embellished by erosion, injection, and necrotic debris. Pathological examination revealed malignant lymphoma of the large cell type whose main growth was in the mucosa and submucosa. This case was significant in that malignant lymphoma occurred in the remnant stomach and that the tumor converted M-protein in the serum, which was confirmed as IgM-k in the cytoplasma immunohistochemically.
C3H/He mice were immunized i.v. with sheep red blood cells (SRBC), and then the effect of i.v. challenge with SRBC on the priming of endogenous production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was investigated. Mice were immunized i.v. with 10(8) SRBC/mouse, and their serum TNF activity, triggered by 3 micrograms lipopolysaccharide (LPS) per mouse, was assayed by an in vitro cytotoxicity test using L-929 cells. Anti-SRBC antibodies were induced maximally in 2 weeks, but the acquired immunity did not affect TNF triggering. However, 9-10 weeks after the primary challenge, when there was still a relatively high antibody titer in the serum, i.v. rechallenge with 10(8) SRBC/mouse transiently enhanced the TNF activity triggered by LPS to about 10 times that in normal control mice. This priming effect of SRBC challenge was antigen specific, because challenge with horse red blood cells (HRBC) had no effect. SRBC opsonized with anti-treated with anti-SRBC antiserum or sonicated SRBC had no effect. These findings suggest two ways of facilitating the triggering of endogenous TNF production: booster challenge of immunized animals with the corresponding antigens makes them ready for TNF triggering, and direct injection of immune complexes, even into normal animals, makes them ready for triggering of TNF. The possible application of these findings for inducing endogenous TNF production in human cancer patients by use of immune complexes is discussed.

The influence of antecedent renal disease on pregnancy was studied retrospectively in 72 women with various renal diseases that had been proved by biopsy. Among 105 pregnancies studied, normal deliveries were observed in 74 (71%), abnormal deliveries with live infants in 14 (13%), fetal or neonatal deaths in 11 (10%), and spontaneous abortions in six (6%). The incidence of normal delivery, as well as that of live births, was the highest in the cases of membranous glomerulonephritis, but there was no obvious difference in the incidence among IgA nephropathy and non-IgA proliferative glomerulonephritis. Cases in which there were tubulointerstitial changes of the cortical area or arteriosclerosis in biopsy specimens and cases that included hypertension (greater than 140/90 mm Hg) or decreased renal function (glomerular filtration rate, less than 70 ml/min) were clearly associated with an unfavorable outcome in delivery. It was concluded that assessment of the advisability of pregnancy in nephritic women should be made on the basis of a combination of the clinical and histologic parameters.
The relationship between the nuclear DNA histogram patterns of tumor cells obtained by brushing via bronchoscopy and the survival time of 39 patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung was investigated. The brushing smears were stained by a modified Feulgen method. The nuclear DNA content was measured at 550 nm using a microspectrophotometer. The DNA histogram pattern was classified into type I, which contained a higher proportion of G0G1-phase cells, and type II, which contained a higher proportion of S, G2M-phase cells. The median survival times for the patients with limited disease of type I, type II and the patients with extensive disease of type I, type II were 17.2 months, 10.2 months, 10.0 months, and 5.6 months, respectively. Patients with limited disease of type I had a significantly longer survival time than patients with limited disease of type II. A distinct correlation was found between the histogram pattern and the survival of the patients. These results indicated that the nuclear DNA histogram pattern may be an indicator to allow speculation as to the prognosis of patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung.
Mutations have been identified in variants of poliovirus, type 1 (Mahoney) on the basis of their resistance to neutralization by individual monoclonal antibodies. The phenotypes of these variants were defined in terms of antibody binding; the pattern of epitopes expressed or able to be exploited for neutralization were complex. Single amino acid changes can have distant (in terms of linear sequence) and generalized effects on the antigenic structure of poliovirus and similarly constituted virions.
A group of novel phosphonoglycosphingolipids was isolated from the tissues of Aplysia. In the present experiment, antiserum was raised against total phosphonoglycosphingolipids isolated from the ganglia. This antiserum seems specific to the oligosaccharide moiety of the glycolipids. It did not react with gangliosides isolated from mammalian brain. Of the total phosphonoglycosphingolipids of the ganglion. GGL-V was strongly reactive, but GGL-I was hardly reactive with the antiserum. The indirect immunoperoxidase method in combination with light microscopy revealed staining of fibrous structures in the neuropil of ganglia, connective tracts and peripheral nerves. These fibrous structures often interconnected with supporting cells (glia cells). However, the neuron and its processes were stained not distinctly. Thus our results indicate that some of the major glycolipids isolated from the ganglion are mainly present in extraneuronal components in the nervous tissues of Aplysia.
Rabbit tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was purified and shown by SDS-PAGE to be a single protein of 18 kDa. TNF in 355 ml rabbit serum was precipitated with ammonium sulfate, and purified by repeated DEAE-Sephadex and Sephacryl S-200 chromatographies, and the final fractionation on Blue-Sepharose 6B. By this procedure its yield was 22% and its specific activity was 2.4 X 10(7) U/mg protein. The sequence of the N-terminal 20 amino acids was determined.
In a review of the vertebral angiograms of 300 patients free from disease at the craniovertebral junction, we found atlantoaxial arterial anomalies in 2,3%. These were: 2 cases in which the vertebral artery ran in the spinal canal below C1, 3 cases of duplication of the vertebral artery above and below C1, and 2 cases of origin of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery at C2. Although these arteries ran in the spinal canal between C1 and C2, they never encroached upon the posterior third of the canal. From the survey of another 21 patients having bony abnormalities at the craniovertebral junction, the first type of arterial anomaly described above was seen in 4 patients and associated with failure of segmentation of the embryonic sclerotome such as occipitalization of the atlas or Klippel-Feil syndrome. It is possible to relate the development of these anomalous vessels to malarrangement of the embryonic segmental arteries. Our results indicate that one must be cautious with lateral C1/2 puncture or surgical exposure of the region.
High-performance liquid chromatographic methods for the determination of dolichols in tissues and plasma have been developed. The tissue concentration of dolichols was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with uv detection and plasma levels of dolichols were determined fluorometrically after derivatization with anthracene-9-carboxylic acid. In both methods, 2,2-didecaprenylethanol was used as an internal standard. The method with fluorescence detection was sufficiently sensitive to measure the concentration of dolichols in human plasma.
By analysing sections of distal femurs in the computer, and by making direct measurements, the posterior femoral condyles were shown to closely fit spherical surfaces. The center of the spheres were then used as reference points and used to define reference axes in a motion study. In flexing from 0 to 120 degrees the medial femoral condyle moved little, the lateral moved posteriorly by 17 mm, and there was an axial rotation of 20 degrees. The data were applied to implant and orthotic design and evaluation.
Urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity was examined in 41 patients who received a 5-day course of aminoglycoside. Both pretreatment N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase values and the increase in N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase after treatment were high in elderly groups, suggesting the increased vulnerability of the kidney with aging.
