Training medical students in interpersonal relationship skills.

A review of the literature on training medical students in interviewing skills reveals a neglect of experimentally controlled studies as well as methods based on the most thoroughly researched approach to training, the Rogerian "core facilitative qualities." This paper reports a description and experimental evaluation of a training method designed to increase the student's comfort in dealing with emotionally intense material and to increase his skills in the core facilitative qualities. Comparison of the experimental and control groups reveals a training effect on the student's ability to recognize and communicate empathic understanding and on attitude and personality variables.

The complexity of satellite deoxyribonucleic acid in a higher plant.

Purified satellite DNA from melon (Cucumis melo) was shown to contain at least two components from thermal-denaturation and renaturation studies. Two components were separated after partial renaturation, a fast-renaturing fraction similar in complexity to mouse satellite DNA, and one with 6000 times greater complexity. Both components renatured very accurately, indicating a minimum of sequence divergence. Centrifugation of the purified satellite DNA in Ag+/Cs2SO4 gradients resolved two major and several minor fractions. The two major fractions were only slightly enriched for fast- or slow-renaturing sequences.

Improvements in a non-proprietary radiometric medium to allow the detection of some Pseudomonas species and Alcaligenes faecalis.

The addition of [5-14C]glutamate and [14C]formate to a non-proprietary medium containing [14C]glucose, Trypticase, yeast extract, thiotone, and salts enabled the radiometric detection of the presence of nonfermenters of glucose. It did not interfere with the rapid detection of the presence of aerobic and anaerobic sporeforemers and nonsporeformers.
