An assay of cultured skin fibroblasts identified several individuals with 3 beta-hydroxysteroid-sulphate sulphatase deficiency. All patients with this inborn error of metabolism had clinically apparent ichthyosis and a family history of this skin disorder compatible with X-linked inheritance. It is concluded that steroid-sulphatase deficiency is the bio-chemical basis of at least some cases of X-linked ichthyosis.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain 9169 has been reported to contain a plasmid that expresses resistance to carbenicillin (Cb), kanamycin (Km), and tetracycline (Tc) in Escherichia coli but resistance only to Cb in certain Pseudomonas recipients. The triply resistant plasmid in E. coli belonged to incompatibility (Inc) group P or P-1, whereas the singly resistant plasmid in P. aeruginosa was compatible with IncP-1 plasmids and other plasmids of established Inc specificity but incompatible with plasmid pSR1 that is here used to define a new Pseudomonas Inc group P-10. Additional physical and genetic studies showed that strain 9169 contained not one but two plasmids: IncP-1 plasmid R91a, determining the Cb Km Tc phenotype, and IncP-10 plasmid R91, determining Cb that differed in molecular weight and in EcoRI and BamHI restriction endonuclease recognition sites. Plasmid multiplicity rather than host effects on plasmid gene expression can account for differences in the phenotype of strain 9169 transconjugants to E. coli and P. aeruginosa.

Obstructive and neuromuscular disorders are common problems of the urinary tract. They cause considerable morbidity and some mortality. In all problem areas research efforts have been and continue to be limited. The principal reason for the lack of research efforts in these areas is the lack of trained established investigators interested in the problems of the urinary tract. Unfortunately, most basic scientists with the research and investigative background to solve many of these problems see them as mundane and not worthy of investigation. In addition, these same basic scientists are out of touch with clinical urologic diseases and probably do not appreciate the magnitude of the problems. In our opinion the solution is 2-fold: to train qualified investigators in urology and nephrology, and to interest, educate and collaborate with the basic scientists about these clinical problems of the urinary tract.
A survey of human sera from healthy individuals revealed the presence of naturally occurring antibodies that react in radioimmunoprecipitation assays with proteins of mammalian type-C viruses. Of 39 sera tested, 100% showed reactivity against baboon endogenous virus, whereas only 49% showed reactivity against simian sarcoma-associated virus. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of immune precipitates revealed one to three bands that comigrate with the virus structural proteins. There were low, but detectable, levels of antibody to the major internal protein of murine leukemia virus, but no activity against the structural proteins of avian sarcoma virus.
Patients with a wide variety of previously treated, advanced solid tumors were assigned to receive either adriamycin-cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II) (cis-platinum) or adriamycin-cyclophosphamide as combination chemotherapy. Hematologic toxicity was prominent but short-lived in most patients; renal toxicity occurred in 14 of 23 patients receiving cis-platinum and frequently precluded further administration of that agent. Of the patients receiving adriamycin-cis-platinum, 37.5% had useful responses, with four of six patients with bronchogenic carcinomas showing partial regression of disease and two patients with embryonal cell carcinoma of the testes showing complete response. In the patients receiving adriamycin-cyclophosphamide, one complete response occurred in a patient with a malignant lymphoma, and the overall response rate was 18%. The combination of adriamycin-cis-platinum merits further study, especially in bronchogenic carcinoma.
