[On "VOT": the case of Bourouchaski (author's transl)].

Our phonetic study of Bourouchaski shows that the homorganic plosives of this language cannot be distinguished by a specific difference in voice onset time (VOT). This finding leads us to the question whether this phonetic feature is of real interest not only for the phonological description of a language, but also in a more general sense for the theory of phonology.

An illusion of auditory saltation similar to the cutaneous "rabbit".

Trains of brief clicks produced successively at 3 points in a horizontal array were not localized accurately. Observers reported clicks occurring in succession across the spaces between sources as well as at the sources themselves. The illusion is functionally related to interstimulus interval, number of clicks per speaker, and regularity of pulsing. It appears similar to Geldard and Sherrick's cutaneous "rabbit" illusion.

The perception of egomotion.

Egomotion is defined as any environmental displacement of the observer. Twenty stationary observers viewed computer-generated films that simulated rectilinear egomotion of constant speed and altitude over an endless plain. The heading point could be 0 degrees, 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 75 degrees, or 90 degrees to an observer's right of the screen center. The screen was 53 degrees wide. Hence, there was a constant heading toward a point on the horizon, but the heading point was not always in view. The typical observer's mean pointing bias was 5.56 degrees to his right and his SD pointing error was 5.18 degrees. The results indicate that these abstract view samples of a pure egomotion ambient optic array are equally effective in giving rise to a compelling perception of egomotion. The results also indicate that observers can perceive the direction of their heading whether or not the heading point is in the view, although accuracy did vary slightly with the specific view. A pointing control using linear perspective scenes whose vanishing points fell off-view showed the same pattern of pointing errors with an overall rightward pointing bias of 3.19 degrees and with an SD pointing error of 3.04 degrees.

Ligamentous injuries of the knee in skiing.

A scoring system for the long-term comparative evaluation of patients with knee ligament injuries was presented. Twenty-four patients hospitalized for injuries to knee ligaments from skiing accidents were examined at a mean of more than 4 years after hospitalization. Eighteen had required surgery, and most were found not to have high scores at the long-term follow-up evaluation. Mechanisms of injury to explain why certain types of falls result in particular injuries were presented.

Isolation of extrachromosomal deoxyribonucleic acid for exfoliative toxin production from phage group II Staphylococcus aureus.

The ability of phage group II staphylococcal strain UT 0101 to produce exfoliative toxin and bacteriocin could be eliminated at a high frequency after growth at high temperatures or in the presence of ethidium bromide or sodium dodecyl sulfate. Extrachromosomal deoxyribonucleic acid, associated with the genes for exfoliative toxin and bacteriocin production, was isolated from strain UT 0101 but was absent from an ethidium bromide-cured substrain. The molecular weight of the exfoliative toxin plasmid, determined by co-sedimentation with the penicillinase plasmid, PI258, was 3.3 times 10-7. The 56S covalently closed circular form of the exfoliative toxin plasmid converted to a 38S open circular form after storage or exposure to sodium dodecyl sulfate. Plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid associated with penicillin resistance could not be identified in the penicillin-resistance Tox+ strains, UT 0007 and UT 0001.
