This paper provides some initial normative and validity data on the Social Avoidance and Distress (SAD) and the Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) scales for junior high school students. Findings indicated: the level of social-evaluative anxiety does not significantly vary during the junior high school years or between sexes, junior high school students report similar levels of FNE to college students but less SAD, a significant positive correlation between treatment subjects' SAD scores and peer sociometric ratings of social-evaluative anxiety, and subjects treated for social anxiety reported significantly less SAD and FNE at follow-up assessment. Recommendations for future research and clinical use of the SAD and FNE are offered.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of rational-emotive therapy and rational-emotive imagery. Fifty-nine junior high school students who volunteered to participate in treatment for interpersonal anxiety were randomly assigned to rational-emotive therapy without imagery (RET), rational-emotive therapy with imagery (REI), relationship-oriented counseling (ROC), and waiting-list control (WLC) groups. Groups met for seven 50-minute treatment sessions during a three-week period. Assessments were conducted at pretreatment, posttreatment, and three-week follow-up. Both self-report and sociometric measures were used to evaluate treatment outcome. At postassessment, both the RET and REI groups were rated on sociometric measures as significantly less interpersonally anxious than the WLC group. Mean scores favored the RET and REI groups, but no significant differences between these groups and the ROC group were obtained. The self-report measure did not significantly differentiate between groups, but the REI group demonstrated significant pre- to follow-up changes. Both the RET and REI groups yielded greater reductions in irrational thinking than did the ROC and WLC groups. In addition, the pattern of the results supported the use of rational-emotive imagery as a component of rational-emotive therapy. The practical implications of these findings are discussed.

A patient who developed invasive adenocarcinoma of the cecum after a 20-year history of Crohn's enterocolitis is reported. Histologic examination of the resected specimen showed widespread severe dysplasia in addition to the invasive carcinoma. An additional 100 randomly selected bowel resection specimens removed for Crohn's disease were reviewed to determine the frequency of epithelial dysplasia. Applying rigorous criteria, we found a 2% incidence of mild dysplasia; no instance of severe dysplasia was identified.
A plasmid was constructed with the promoter/regulatory region of the mouse metallothionein-I gene fused to the structural gene of herpesvirus thymidine kinase. When mouse eggs were microinjected with this plasmid and incubated with cadmium (a natural inducer of metallothionein gene transcription) thymidine kinase activity increased approximately 10-fold compared with control eggs not exposed to cadmium. Analysis of a set of deletion mutants revealed that the minimum sequence required for cadmium regulation lies within 90 nucleotides of the transcription start site.
Recombinant vectors containing the mouse metallothionein-I gene (MT-I) and the Escherichia coli xanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase gene (gpt) were used to transfect human hgprt- HeLa cells. Transfected MT-I genes are transcriptionally regulated by cadmium but not by glucocorticoids. S1 mapping indicates that the transcripts from transfected MT-I genes begin at the correct transcription initiation site. We also transfected mouse tk- L cells with a vector containing the mouse MT- I gene and the herpes simplex virus-I thymidine kinase gene. MT-I gene transcription is regulated by cadmium but not by glucocorticoids in this homologous system as well. Finally, we fused the MT-I gene promoter/regulatory region to the thymidine kinase structural gene. Thymidine kinase activity is regulated by cadmium when this fusion gene is transfected into mouse tk- L cells. Deletion mapping experiments indicate that the DNA sequences necessary for regulation of the MT-I gene by cadmium lie within 148 bp of its transcription start site.

We have studied the ability of a purified preparation of leucocyte interferon (IF) to augment human antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC). The IF preparation was added to cultures of the ADCC assay consisting of peripheral blood mononuclear target cells, a sensitizing human antiserum specific for the HLA antigens expressed on the target cells, and effector cells obtained from the peripheral blood of healthy human subjects. Increased cytolysis was found at each of four effector to target cell ratios but could be demonstrated only at concentrations of the sensitizing antiserum of 2.5% and lower. Removal of monocytes from the effector cell population did not decrease the level of cytotoxicity, and isolated monocytes were unreactive, suggesting that K cells (the subpopulation of lymphocytes mediating ADCC) were susceptible to augmentation. Since it is widely accepted that IF can augment spontaneous cytotoxicity mediated by natural killer (NK) cells, our results provide further evidence that human NK and K cells are the same or similar subpopulations or that the mechanisms regulating the activities of these cells are similar. Furthermore, our findings suggest that IF treatment can improve the discriminatory power of the ADCC assay in detecting transfusion or transplantation related immunity.

The application to aviation psychology of Gibson's (4) "ecological approach to visual perception" demands information-rich visual displays to adequately and unambiguously enable a pilot to perform flight maneuvers. Optical information often takes the form of invariant properties of a changing optic array, and functional invariants are defined as psychologically effective optical invariants. Their effectiveness is determined by empirical test, but standard experimental paradigms are shown to be inappropriate for testing the effectiveness of information-rich displays. This is due to the presence of inherent and unavoidable confounding factors that are here termed "secondary independent variables" in contradistinction to the "primary independent variables" manipulated by the experimenter. Recommendations for a new methodology and statistical treatment are offered, and the implications for aviation psychology are discussed.
The turnover of plasma membrane proteins in primary rat hepatocyte cultures was examined by following the loss of polypeptides labeled in situ by lactoperoxidase-catalyzed iodination using 125I and 131I. Most plasma membrane proteins had similar rates of degradation, having a half-life of approximately 85 h. By in situ labeling via lactoperoxidase-catalyzed iodination, as well as metabolically labeling cells with L-[35S]methionine, the asialoglycoprotein receptor, a plasma membrane constituent, was identified and shown to exist in three forms which were structurally related. The turnover of receptor on the cell surface was examined by following the loss of iodinated cell surface receptor, while the turnover of total cellular receptor, including both surface and internally localized receptor was assayed by following the loss of receptor labeled metabolically with [35S]methionine. The turnover rate in both cases was approximately 20 h. Receptor-mediated endocytosis of asialoglycoproteins had no effect on the turnover of the plasma membrane proteins or receptor. Based on estimates of the rate of metabolism of the asialoglycoprotein ligand relative to the turnover rate of the receptor, we conclude each molecule of receptor can deliver about 1,000 molecules of ligand to the lysosome to be degraded.
An experiment was conducted to determine whether accuracy and efficiency of detecting loss in one's own forward speed are constant when optical information is invariant over a wide range of environmental variables. Deceleration rate, initial forward velocity, and altitude were varied so as to isolate initial optical flow rate, optical flow deceleration, and optical flow damping invariants specified in observer-relevant metrics. The candidate resulting in the most consistent effect on performance was global damping, which specifies a contrast of flow deceleration with initial flow rate. The finding is a first step toward validating a procedure for identifying functional invariants by assessing the usefulness of mathematically specified optical information for the perception of egomotion. The research represents both a methodological development and empirical support for the broader program of ecological functionalism.
A plasmid, designated pMK, containing the structural gene for thymidine kinase from herpes simplex virus (HSV) fused to the promoter/regulatory region of the mouse metallothionein-I gene, was injected into the pronucleus of fertilized one-cell mouse eggs; the eggs were subsequently reimplanted into the oviducts of pseudopregnant mice. The first experiment produced 19 offspring, one of which expressed high levels of HSV thymidine kinase activity in the liver and kidney. pMK DNA sequences were detected in equal amounts in several tissues of the expressing mouse as well as in three mice that did not express HSV thymidine kinase activity. In all cases, several copies of the pMK plasmid were tandemly duplicated and integrated into mouse DNA. It appears as though multiple copies of the intact plasmid were fused by homologous recombination either before or after integration at a single site in the mouse genome. The overall efficiency of obtaining somatic expression of thymidine kinase in experiments performed to date is about 10% (4/41), and twice this number have integrated pMK DNA. This procedure not only provides a means of introducing new genes into mice, but it will also be a valuable system for studying tissue-specific regulation of gene expression.
A proximal tibial epiphysiodesis was successfully performed on the right hind legs of 23 young lambs, producing an average shortening of 12% of the total length of the tibia. A lengthener was attached to stainless steel pins which were then tapped into the shortened tibia prior to osteotomy. In 16 of the 23 animals it was possible to lengthen the shortened bone at a rate of 0.5 mm twice daily until the discrepancy was corrected. The gait was normal in most of the animals, all had full knee motion with no thigh atrophy, and 16 had limited hock (ankle) joint motion. Lengthening of the tibia by more than 11% consistently produced muscle changes in the leg and cartilage damage in the hock (ankle) joint. Any malalignment of the tibial fragments during lengthening intensified these changes.
