Effect of alimentation on human serum squalene levels.

Five subjects consumed a meal containing ca. 1.5 mg squalene. Postprandial serum samples showed that in three of the subjects squalene and lipid levels reached maxima at 3 hr. Squalene levels in the low density lipoproteins of these subjects also increased. The results indicate that alimentation is a major factor in the variation in serum squalene levels.

Cytology in the diagnosis and followup of transitional cell carcinoma of the urothelium: a review with a case series.

Acceptance of the value of urinary cytology in transitional cell carcinoma has been mixed. Over-all accuracy is only fair to good and the results in mass screening are poor. However, cytology can be valuable in the serial evaluation of selected patients by the collection of multiple specimens. It is an important adjunct in upper tract lesions, in carcinoma in situ and in the evaluation of the patient with unexplained hematuria. Herein we analyze patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the urothelium with special reference to the use of cytology irrigation specimens from the bladder and the renal pelvis as an initial diagnostic tool and as an adjunctive technique for the evaluation of recurrence.

Spectral characteristics of some metallo complexes of six-mercaptopurine.

Absorption spectra from 400-250 nm were obtained for 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and its Bi, Pt, and Pd complexes. The peaks were all grouped in close proximity (+/-5nm) and the curves were similar. Under the conditions of this study, the purine chemistry of 6-MP does not appear to be appreciably altered as a result of the pure compound complexing with the Bi, Pt, or Pd metals.

Composition of guttation fluid from rye, wheat, and barley seedlings.

This work was undertaken to determine the kinds and amount of substances that would account for the previously demonstrated differential growth of Claviceps purpurea on guttation fluids from Rosen rye, Genesee wheat, and Traill barley seedlings. Chromatographic methods were used for determining amino acids and sugars, spot tests and spectrometric methods for inorganic materials, and microbiological methods for vitamins.Total sugar content is about equal in rye and barley fluids, but lower in wheat. Glucose is the principal sugar component of the rye and barley fluids and galactose highest in wheat. Most of the amino acid in all 3 fluids is aspartic acid or asparagine. Barley fluid is far higher than the other 2 in total amino acids, with wheat the lowest. Most inorganic elements are found to be highest in barley and lowest in wheat, with the exception of iron where rye is highest and barley lowest. Barley fluid is highest in choline, p-aminobenzoic acid, thiamine, and uracil, while rye is highest in inositol and pyridoxine. Wheat is much lower than the other 2 in choline and inositol.

Testicular blood flow and fluid dynamics in monkeys with surgically induced varicoceles.

The blood flow rates and ability to remove an added fluid load were studied in the testes of monkeys with surgically induced varicoceles and in sham-operated control monkeys. These studies were conducted to verify a proposed mechanism by which varicocele may cause testicular and spermatogenic damage. Analyses of the data indicated that, at four months after induction, the testes of monkeys with varicocele were less able to remove a perfused fluid load and that, at five months, the blood flow was significantly less in the testes of these animals. The effects were most pronounced in the left testes of the monkeys with varicocele. Blood flow values calculated were: control, right--9.66 ml X 100 g-1 X min-1; control, left--10.42 ml X 100 g-1 X min-1; varicocele, right--7.73 ml X 100 g-1 X min-1; varicocele, left--5.04 ml X 100 g-1 X min-1. These data suggest a new theory, that increased pressure on the venous side of testicular capillary beds in subjects with varicocele may decrease blood flow and cause testicular damage.

Corpus cavernosography. Pressure flow and radiography.

Corpus cavernosograms and pressure flow dynamics were used to evaluate 28 impotent men. The rises in pressure during saline infusion and development of artificial erection were the criteria used to divide the men into three groups. The cavernosograms were graded as to filling of venous channels, staining of glans and spongiosum, completeness of filling, filling defects, and tunica thickening. The seven men who had the lowest rises in intracavernous pressure failed to develop erection and had the greatest evidence of prominent venous drainage. The seven men who developed artificial erection at 120 ml/min had the least evidence of venous drainage, while the remaining 14 men, who developed partial erection, had intermediate findings. Eight patients had abnormal arteriograms; two had no erection, four had partial erection, and two had full erection. Artificial erection can be induced in some impotent men. Prominent venous drainage will prevent artificial erection in some impotent men.
