In addition to the chemotherapy, surgery and physical treatments usually employed in the treatment of bony secondaries from renal tumours, the authors propose embolization. They have performed this procedure in 4 patients, using a mixture of isobutyl-2-cyanoacrylate and lipiodol. Arteriography is performed before and after the embolization which is carried out under local anaesthesia. Disappearance or relief of pain was obtained in each case. This technique in no way changes the prognosis of the disease, but it can improve the quality of life of these patients. A review of the literature reveals that metastases other than renal have already been embolized, as have primary malignant bone tumours. The authors describe their method, the incidents associated with treatment, the contra-indications and the supposed mechanism of the analgesic action of embolization.

Radioimmunological assays of carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) and beta 2 microglobulin were carried out in 61 cases of malignant bone disease, including myeloma and metastases from carcinomas of the breast and prostate. CEA assays seemed to be of greater interest in mammary cancer metastases and beta 2 microglobulin assays in prostatic cancer metastases and myeloma. The correlation which appeared between CEA levels of the outcome of breast cancer metastases was of assistance in adjusting treatment. Combining CEA and beta 2 microglobulin assays would enhance their usefulness in current practice.

The authors report 3 cases of chronic atrophic polychondritis with clinical signs characteristic of the disease. The 3 patients had deafness of perceptive type, very severe in one case. In one case, the relationship between inflammatory rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis is discussed. The 3 cases include a pathological study under the electron microscope of the cartilage of the ear. Certain ultrastructural peculiarities observed (dense perichondrocyte granules) are compared with the data in the literature.
