Anthropometric determination of body volume, body density and segmental volume in adult Indian women.

Body density, total body volume, leg volume and arm volume of 65 young Indian women 20-25 years were measured experimentally. In addition, a series of 61 anthropometric measurements were also taken on each subject. Correlations of leg volume with total body volume and body density were 0.91 and -0.73 respectively and of arm volume with total body volume and body density were 0.84 and -0.66 respectively. Hip girth alone showed a very high positive correlation (r = 0.94) with body volume and on selective stepwise multiple regression analysis, a combination of even four anthropometric measurements, namely, hip girth, lower thigh girth, ankle girth and shoulder diameter gave an extremely high positive multiple correlation coefficient (R = 0.98) with body volume. Selective stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was conducted also to estimate leg volume, arm volume and body density and stepwise regression equations up to 4th step for estimating each parameter are given.

Free sugars in relation to starch accumulation in developing rice grain.

The changes in sugars (water-soluble carbohydrates) were studied in the developing grain of rice (Oryza sativa L., variety IR28 and IR29) in relation to the role of these sugars as precursors of ADP glucose in starch accumulation. The levels of total sugars, total reducing sugars and free glucose, sucrose and other nonreducing sugars, maltooligosaccharides, and total and nonsucrosyl fructose followed closely the changes in the rate of starch accumulation, in both IR28 and 29; the peak value occurred 9 days after flowering. The level of soluble carbohydrates remained high in the caryopsis and also in milled rice after starch accumulation, suggesting that the supply of sugar precursors does not limit starch accumulation in the rice grain. Because of a higher level of reducing sugars, the level of free sugars in the grain of waxy rice IR29 was higher than that of nonwaxy IR28.

Short colon malformation with imperforate anus.

Ten cases of a rare high anorectal malformation associated with short colon are presented. The significance of a large gas fluid level (occupying more than half of the abdominal cavity on invertogram) is stressed for pre-operative diagnosis. Terminal colostomy or ileostomy with disconnection of colo-vesical/colo-vaginal fistula has been considered the only adequate therapy. Associated congenital malformations have been responsible for high mortality in these patients.

Role of tissue typing on preserved nerve allografts in dogs.

Histocompatibility seems to play an important role in the regeneration of nerve allografts. Compatible tissue typed nerve allografts behave more like autografts and are, therefore, more readily accepted by the host tissue without producing evident tissue rejection. The influence of histocompatibility difference becomes more marked if the graft is longer than 30-40 mm. Irradiation as a means of reducing the immune reaction of the nerve allografts does not seem to have any beneficial effect along with tissue typing. Preservation of nerve grafts at - 70°C does not have any untoward effect.

Nerve allografts and histocompatibility in dogs.

The histocompatibility requirements for successful frozen nerve allografts were studied in 46 dogs. Major canine histocompatibility (DLA) differences appeared to be of vital importance for nerve regeneration and function, as judged by histological and electromyographic performance 7 to 9 months after grafting. Minor histocompatibility differences did not appear to lead to rejection of the frozen nerve allografts. Graft irradiation did not improve the acceptability of frozen DLA-mismatched grafts. The effect of DLA matching was much more pronounced in allografts 7 cm long than in allografts 4 cm long. The results indicate the need for a bank of frozen human histocompatible (HLA) nerve allografts, and a study of the effect of partial or complete HLA matching on their survival.

Plasma cortisol in glaucoma.

Plasma cortisol level and intraocular tension were determined diurnally in 40 normal and 40 glaucomatous patients at 8 AM and 8 PM. It was observed that (1) plasma cortisol level was higher in glaucomatous patients at both the periods; (2) the diurnal variation in plasma cortisol was parallel to diurnal variation in intraocular tension in both glaucomatous and normal persons; and (3) the diurnal variation in plasma cortisol level also was more marked in glaucomatous patients as compared to normal persons.

Influence of nitrogen supply on host and multiplication of cucumber mosaic virus.

The effect of several concentrations of nitrogen (0, 21, 70, 210, 420 and 630 ppm) on the growth and multiplication of cucumber mosaic virus in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. Barshati) grown in sand culture was studied. The effect of nitrogen nutrition on the concentration of virus appeared to be directly related to vegetative growth of the host. 420 ppm level yielding the best growth also showed the highest virus concentration and total nitrogen percentage at 30th day of infection.

Experience with allografts in the surgery of peripheral nerves (experimental study).

Peroneal nerve allografts four to seven cm in length were transplanted in 36 tissue typed beagle dogs, using a standard microsurgical technique. The influence of tissue typing on nerve regeneration through these grafts was studied with the help of electromyography and histology seven to nine months after nerve implantation. Better regeneration was found through the grafts with compatible than with noncompatible typing. The favourable effect of tissue compatibility became more evident when the length of the graft was longer than four cm. Tissue rejection reaction was much more marked and evident with longer grafts in noncompatible than in compatible groups. Radiation, with tissue typing, did not seem to confer any additional beneficial effect. Compatible tissue typed nerve allografts probably behave more like autografts.

Alternative behavioral approaches to the treatment of homosexuality.

Radical changes in attitudes toward homosexuality in American society are integrated into a new perspective for the therapist confronted by a client who engages in homosexual behavior. The traditional mandatory attempt to eradicate homosexual behavior has been expanded into three options, any one of which may be pursued by the therapist at the client's request: (1) modification of homosexual in favor of heterosexual behavior, (2) enhancement of homosexual behavior, and (3) ignoring of homosexual behavior if it is functionally unrelated to the presenting symptoms. Therapists' negative attitudes toward clients who engage in homosexual behavior are such as to abrogate expanded options and may results in therapeutic efforts at modification of homosexual behavior in defiance of the client's expressed wishes. Contrary to current professional belief, careful analysis and the use of appropriate techniques such as systematic desensitization, orgasmic reconditioning, and training in heterosocial skills generally obviate the necessity for aversive procedures in those instances where homosexual behavior is to be modified in favor of heterosexual behavior. Three case histories are presented illustrating the use of each of the expanded options described above.

A longitudinal study of the growth of trunk surface area measured by planimeter on standard somatotype photographs.

Thoracic and abdominal surface areas have been measured by planimeter on 340 photogrammetric somatotype photographs of 15 boys of the Harpenden Growth Study followed at regular intervals from 3 to 20 years of age. Mean distance and velocity curves are given, estimated by Patterson's method for extracting maximum information from mixed longitudinal data. Both areas showed a marked adolescent growth spurt with the age at peak coinciding with the age of peak height velocity of the same children. The correlation coefficients between thorax and abdominal surface areas rose from an average of about 0-3 at ages 5-8 to 0-5 at ages 9-12 and 0-7 at ages 13-19. Trunk index (thorax/abdomen area) fell gradually with age from 5 to 9 and thereafter remained constant.
