[Sequential hepato-splenic scintigraphy for measurement of hepatic blood flow (author's transl)].

The arterial and portal components of total liver blood flow were determined quantitatively in 31 patients by means of a new, non-invasive method. Sequential hepato-splenic scintigraphy has been employed, using a scintillation camera linked to a computer system. In normals, the proportion of portal flow was 71%, whereas in patients with portal hypertension it averaged 21%. Our experience indicates that the procedure can be of considerable value in the pre-operative diagnosis and postoperative follow-up of portal hypertension.

The course of multiple sclerosis cases with extremely high gamma-globulin values in the cerebrospinal fluid.

40 selected cases of multiple sclerosis (MS) with extremely high gamma-globulin values in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) (over 25 rel%, upper normal limit 7.5 rel%) were matched with the same number of MS patients with normal CSF findings. Surprisingly, no definite relationship could be shown between the amount of CSF gamma-globulins and the various clinical criteria in MS, such as age, type of progression, duration of illness, remission, extent of plaques and gravity of the disease.

Palmar crease variants and their clinical significance: a study of newborns at risk.

An analysis of palmar crease variants was carried out in a group of "at risk" newborns, without any evident congenital anomalies. This group consisted of 108 prematures, 74 infants who were small for gestational age, 62 newborns with history of gestational complications, and 46 newborns with a history of intrauterine methadone exposure. A system of classification was developed based on observations of 500 normal newborns as control subjects, 466 normal mothers, and 200 normal children. The palmar crease variants can be divided into four main groups, schematically presented as normal variants, simian crease and its variants, Sydney line and its variants, and another group of unusual variants which do not fit into the other groups. A study of these groups revealed that familial components, race, sex, and age are factors that can influence the expression of palmar crease patterns. There is an increased frequency of abnormal creases in each of the groups of "at risk" newborns. Moreover, there is an apparent association of interrupted transrerse creases and intrauterine methadone exposure.

[Investigations about ascertainment of exact morphological indices for the functionally activity of islets cells by means of electron optical characterizing and succeeded automatically image analysis of metal-containing secreting granules (author's transl)].

Biological image analysis with the "Quantimet 720" has been surrounded to date by difficulties due to the complexity of the image itself, and the difficulty of the Quantimet to discriminate between different objects on the basis of their grey levels alone (Bradbury 1975). Although the makers of image analysing computers try to diminish these difficulties by contructing new models of computers in future, we have the opinion, that it is possible to receive already today excellent results in image analysing of structures in biology and medicine under the following condition: selective staining of objects, we want to measure by simultaneous discriminating of those structures, which influence negatively the image analysing on the basis of their grey levels.

[Computer analyse of ultrahistochemical observed metal containing secretory granules in Langerhans islets cells of normoglycemic and diabetic rat].

Metal-containing secretory granules of alpha 2-cells of the LANGERHANS' islets of normal and alloxan-diabetic rats were stained for electron microscopy by a special method. Thereafter the electron micrographs were analysed by the Quantimet 720 image analysing computer with respect to size of the granules and their quantitative distribution in classes. The following statistical tests verified significant differences between the distributions of the secretory granules under normal and diabetic conditions. The secretory granules from alloxan-diabetic animals were diminished distinctly. The examination by image analysing computer confirmed objectively observations, we have made and published formerly.

Rat transplantation antigens. V. A variation of the KCl-method releasing low molecular weight antigen.

Extraction of soluble histocompatibility antigen from normal rat lymphoid cells by hypertonic salt (3 M KC1) releases high mol. wt material. It the original lymphoid cell suspension is washed more than once before extraction, antigenic acitivity disappears as measured by inhibition of cytotoxic antibody. This activity is mostly retained in the supernatants of the washing procedures. Extraction of these cell-free supernatants produced an antigenic material with a mol. wt of approximately 60,000. This suggests that at least part of the material accessible for KCl-extraction is released very early from the cell surface from the mechanical action, necessary for preparing the cell suspension.

[Studies on the tolerance of the organism to X 5 CrNiMo 18.10 steel (Königsee). IV. Studies on the tissue surrounding the X 5 CrNiMo 18.10 steel implants by means of an electron x-ray microprobe in the animal experiment].

Electron-x-ray micro-analysis was used for quantitative assess of element concentrations of alien materials in the tissue surrounding implantates of X 5 CrNiMo 18.10-steel. High amounts of iron were found whereas chromium and nickel concentrations were lower in the examined parts of the connective tissue around the metal. These examinations do not exclude that the iron partly comes from destructed erythrocytes. The amounts of chromium and nickel, however, suggest that the deposits of alien materials are sequels of electrolytic corrosion of the X 5 CrNiMo 18.10-steel implantates.
