Effect of low-level microwave irradiation on the duodenal electrical activity of the unanesthetized rat.

The effects of low-level microwave irradiation (5 and 7.5 mW/cm2 at 2.45 GHz) on duodenal electrical activity (slow waves and action potentials) were studied in the unanesthetized rat by way of chronically implanted electrodes. Exposure to microwaves occurred in a cavity for 1 to 4 hours. The specific absorption rates (SAR) were measured at 5.35, 6.05, and 7.04 mW/g, respectively, under 5, 7.5, and 10 mW/cm2 of incident radiation. The results, obtained on seven rats, showed that microwaves usually produce an accelerating effect on the slow waves, and a specific inhibitory effect on action potentials. Those effects appear to be directly dependent on the SAR.

Influence of skin illumination on plasma biogenic amines in the rabbit.

The effects of skin illumination on plasma catecholamines were tested in the rabbit. The values observed for epinephrine, nor-epinephrine and dopamine, dosed by the radioenzymatic technique, were in accordance with those generally published. However, variability is important. Discontinuous skin illumination significantly increased (P less than or equal to 0.05) only the level of dopamine in plasma. No evident demonstration can explain this elevation, but the role of the important interrelations between L-dopa, involved in melanogenic activity, and dopamine is discussed as the first step in the understanding of such a phenomenon.

Electrointraperitoneography: a new method for testing the pharmacological effects of drugs at the intestine level--preliminary note.

A recent and nontraumatizing method, electrointraperitoneography (EIG), has been used in the anesthetized rat in order to test its usefulness for the pharmacological study of drug effects on the electrical activity of the intestine. The results show that such a study is possible for different drugs. Advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed.

Effects of low level microwave radiation on the digestive transit of the rat.

The effects of low level microwave radiation (3-4 mW/cm2--2450 MHz) during 4 and 8 h on the WISTAR Rat digestive transit has been studied. The results showed no effect after 4 h radiation and an acceleration of the digestive transit after 8 h of radiation (p less than .001). The acceleration of the digestive transit was still observed after 24 h (p less than .001). 60-90 s after radiation time the rectal temperature of radiated animals did not differ from the controls.

[Incidences of resistance capacity (RC) and of electrode-interval enlargement on the gastro-intestinal electrical activity of the awake dog (author's transl)].

By the use of differents resistance capacity (RC) values (0,3, 0,7, 1, 3, 6 and 7 s.) during bipolar recordings of digestive electromyogramme in chronically implanted dogs, it has been shown that the RC incidences were:--an increase of the slow wave potential amplitude, the optimale value of the RC was 3 sec;--the detection with long RC (1, 3, 6 and 7 S.) of a slow post-potential at the antral level. But there is no effect of the RC on the slow wave duration and on the spikes potentials caracteristics (amplitude-duration number). When the interval between the two active electrodes is increased (0,5 to 63 cm) the slow wave amplitude is enlarged; the best results on the slow wave amplitude are obtained with an electrode-interval of 7 to 8 cm. In cases of an important interval between two active electrodes (8, 16, 32, 63, 190 cm), the slow wave frequency at an intestinal level is dependent of the upward electrode. The spikes potentials are affected by electrode interval enlargement, and are dependent of the contractil events which can appear under each separated electrode.

Determination of erythrocyte vitamin B12 activity.

Data presented in this paper show that there is no significant difference between plasma and serum vitam B12 activity when EDTA is used as the anticoagulant. By drawing 5 ml of blood into a tube containing EDTA, the whole blood and plasma B12 activity can be measured using Lactobacillus leichmannii for the assay as the test organism. Erythrocyte B12 levels can be obtained by difference after correcting for hematocrit. Sodium heparin appears to inhibit the growth of L. leichmannii.

[Exploration of digestive electrophysiology using a new technic : electrointraperitoneography (EIG)].

A new and simple method, the electrointraperitoneography (E.I.G.) is described and used for the recording of the digestive motility in conscious dogs and in anesthetized rabbits and rats. With the E.I.G. method, we have found the two types of potentials which characterise the electrical activity of the small intestine : the basic electrical rhythm (B.E.R.) and the action potentials (spikes).

[Experimental stomach cancerization in the rat].

Simulated gastric cancers in rats have been realised by implantation of walker tumour with three different methods. The best results are obtained with the injection of 0,1 ml of tumour cells suspension in the antral wall. With this method, no important trauma is done to the antral wall, and percentage of tumour implantation in antral wall is high (84%).

[Spatio-temporal development of Walker tumor implanted in the stomach wall of the Wistar rat].

Simulated gastric cancers have been realised in rats with injection of 0,1 ml of tumour cells suspension in the antral wall. A macroscopic and a microscopic study have been done. The antral tumour showed a constant growth pattern and rats died between 12th to 16th days after tumour implantation. During the first days (1 to 9) the tumour growth is relatively slow, the tumour does not extend out of the antral wall and remains in the submucous part of the gastric wall. After this time, the tumour growth is faster and the anatomicals structures of the wall are destroyed. It is possible with our method, to induce gastric cancer in large series of rats, which can be examined at different stage of Walker tumour growth.
