Increasing antigenicity of B16 melanoma cell fraction with microwave hyperthermia.

An injection of a fraction of a fraction (C30 mw) obtained by centrifugation at 30 kg of homogenate of B16 melanoma cells, treated with microwave hyperthermia (2450 MHz, CW, 44 degrees C, for 20 minutes), increases the survival time (p less than 0.01) of C57-BL/6J male mice inoculated 26 days later with 10(7) cells (viability greater than 95%) of B16 melanoma. This delay of 26 days between these two injections corresponds to the moment where the synthesis of immunoglobulins is increased in protected mice. The earliest death (p less than 0.001) of animals injected with untreated tumoral cell fraction (C30), and that received a suspension of viable B16 melanoma cells (10(7)) can be explained by an inhibition of humoral immunity system.

Influence of skin illumination on serum acetylcholinesterase of the rabbit.

The effects of skin illumination (continuous or discontinuous colorless or yellow filtered white light) on acetylcholinesterase levels are tested on rabbit serum. Significant increases in acetylcholinesterase are observed with continuous and discontinuous colorless filtered white light as compared to controls.

[Postoperative uretero-vaginal fistula in a duplicated excretory system].

A case is presented of uretero-vaginal fistula following hysterectomy for multiple fibromatosis. Duplicity of the left urinary tract, with caudal ectopy of ureteral opening of the branch draining the upper renal pole, could explain "a posteriori" some singularities of the clinical behaviour, i.e. combination of both controlled micturitions and continuous urinary loss "per vaginam" with seemingly normal urography. Postoperative chromocystoscopy afforded the correct diagnosis and surgical repair was followed by uneventful recovery. Preoperative assessment by urography and cystoscopy is therefore recommended prior to undertaking pelvic surgery, in order to promptly recognise complications to urinary tract, should they occur.

[Increase in the immunogenicity of cancer cells exposed to microwaves].

A suspension of 10(7) melanoma cells, submitted to microwave hyperthermia (2,450 MHz, 20 minutes, 44 degrees C) leads to a partial protection in mice inoculated 26 days afterwards with a suspension of 10(7) active cells of B16 melanoma (95% vitality). The period of 26 days between the two injections corresponds to the moment where the sera antibodies have an highest level. The kinetics of the primary response of the humoral immunity shows that B16 melanoma proliferation and number of deads can be related to an hypogammaglobulinemia.

[Metastatic melanoma B16 of the C57Bl/6J mouse. Biological findings].

Biological study of a new metastatic variant of C57Bl/6J mice melanoma MB16 derived from a (poorly) invasive tumor (B16), are reported. We showed significative differences in tumor growth (female) and in pulmonary metastasis occurrence. Differentiation is weakly modified.

[Increase of the antigenicity of B16 melanoma cell membranes by microwave hyperthermia].

An injection of a suspension of B16 melanoma cell membranes, treated with micro-wave hyperthermia, increases the survival time of mice inoculated 26 days after with 10(7) (viability greater than 95%) of B16 melanoma. This delay (26 days) between these two injections corresponds to the moment where the synthesis of sera anticorps (IgG, IgA, IgM) is increased in "protected" mice. The earliest death of animals injected with untreated tumoral cell membranes and who received a suspension of B16 melanoma cells can be explained by an inhibition of humoral immunity system.

Effects of neonatal ovariectomy on antibody production.

T lymphocyte activity and thymic secretion were studied in bilaterally ovariectomized and sham-operated rats. Our data suggest that ovaries could not act on estradiol receptors located on thymic epithelial cells, the source of thymic factors, but on other hypothetic receptors affected by puberty.

Effect of microwave irradiation (2450 MHz) on murine cytotoxic lymphocyte and natural killer (NK) cells.

Male Balb/c mice were exposed in an anechoic chamber to 2450 MHz CW microwaves at 5, 10, 15, and 20 mW/cm2, 4 hours daily for 4 days, under controlled environmental conditions. T-cell cytotoxicity and natural killer (NK) cell activity were compared in exposed and sham animals. A significant decrease (p less than 0.001) of cell-mediated cytotoxicity was observed only for a power density of 20 mW/cm2. A significant increase (p less than 0.01) in NK activity was demonstrated following exposures at 15 mW/cm2.

[Demonstration, in the black mouse, of a protein linked to the process of cancer formation in B16 melanoma].

One supplementary protein (PI = 3,5; molecular weight 70 000) was detected by electrofocusing in sera of black male and female Mice bearing the B16 melanoma. This protein was also present in the cytoplasmic fraction of tumoral cells, but not in the membrane fraction and cytoplasmic fractions of hepatic and spleen cells. The cancerous Mice presented an augmentation of the total sera proteins compared to the controls.

[Relation between the electrophysiological activities of the digestive viscera and the signals received from the abdominal wall. Initial results in the waking rat].

Experiments in the unanesthetized rats were made to examine the possibilities of relations between visceral and abdominal sites of electrodes implantation. From gastric duodenal ileal electrodes wire, relations may be observed with the surface records with the following limitation: in the frequencies greater than or equal to 200 cycles/mn ("A" range) the spiking visceral activity is never found from surface derivation where the EKG is frequently present. In the ranging of 60 to 80 cycles/mn correspondences of the signals are in relation with respiratory transmission. The slower frequencies from surface activity (longlasting RC time constant of 6 s are used) concern duodenal (38,8 +/- 0,98 cycles/mn) and ileal (28,6 +/- 1,9 cycles/mn) slow waves activities may be recognized in the sequences during several minutes in alternation with the C type activities. In such conditions of typical correspondences, it may be noticed modifications of signal during the viscero-parietal transmission: attenuation (averaging 0,7); dephasage of 5 to 12 seconds (swing to strong capacitive component acting as an active filter) and mixing with others activities not be identified. The methodological interest for a non invasive characterization of visceral physiological states is discussed.

[Multicystic dysplasia of the kidney in the adult].

Two cases of multicystic renal dysplasia in the adult are presented and the pathogenic theories of the condition are reviewed. The more severe defects of development are those which more often remain clinically silent, until are detected, usually in a casual manner, in the adult age. Palpable mass or, more often, traditional radiology, densito-tomography and echography allow differentiation from other conditions such as polycystic kidney, tumors, tuberculosis, hydronephrosis. Anyhow, in the Author's opinion, surgical exploration is mandatory for definite diagnosis as well as for exeresis of the dysplastic mass.

Incidence of low-level microwave irradiation on intestinal myoelectrical activity in the rat.

We studied the effect of low-level microwave irradiation (5 and 7.5 mW/cm2 at 2.45 GHz) on intestinal myoelectrical activity on seven unanesthetized rats by way of chronically implanted electrodes. Exposure to microwaves occurred for 1-4 hr in a cavity. The specific absorption rates (SAR) measured were respectively: 5.35, 6.05 and 7.04 mW/g under 5, 7.5 and 10 mW/cm2 of incident radiation. The results obtained showed there is no noticeable electromagnetic interference between microwave and metallic-insulated implanted electrodes. Microwaves produce an accelerating effect on slow waves and a specific inhibitory effect on action potentials, which appears to be directly dependent on the measured SAR values.
