Metabolism, oxygen transport, and erythropoietin synthesis in the anemia of thermal injury.

The relationship between metabolism, oxygen transport, and anemia was assessed in burn patients. A significant negative correlation was found between erythrocyte 2,3 DPG, the major modulator of oxygen transport, and erythropoietin synthesis. Simultaneous bioassay and radioimmunoassay for erythropoietin revealed elevated values in the anemic burn patients. Elevated 2,3 DPG values during convalescence from thermal injury may remove the "anemic hypoxia" stimulus to erythropoieitn production, resulting in persistence of the anemia.

A mutant transcription factor that is activated by 3':5'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate.

We report here the isolation of an extragenic suppressor of a promoter mutation in the lactose operon of Escherichia coli. Genetic data have indicated that the suppressor of the P(-) mutation maps in the structural gene for the transcription factor catabolite activator protein. Biochemical studies suggest that the mutant molecules of catabolite activator protein are altered in such a way that they are activated by 3':5'-cyclic GMP in addition to their normal effector, 3':5'-cyclic AMP.

Positive contrast in the runway obtained with delay of reward.

The failure to find positive contrast effects in the runway may be attributed to a ceiling effect that can be overcome with the use of delay of reward. Rats were trained one trial a day in a runway with small, medium, or large reward. When a shift to large reward was combined with delay of reward, shift groups slowed down less than controls.
