[Telethermographic patterns in scrotal diseases. Analysis of the causes of hypothermia].

One hundred fifty six telethermographic exams, carried our for scrotal pathology (testicular and extratesticular), have been analyzed. In 80% of cases the pathological area has determined a remarkable hyperthermic thermographic pattern. On the contrary, in the remaining 20% of cases, the affected area has resulted iso- or hypothermic. In this work the eventual pathologic substrate, responsible of the different thermographic patterns, is discussed, also taking into account the echographic results.

[Importance of sucking stimulation in lactation: histological aspects of the mammary gland in the rat].

The Authors refer the results of a study concerning the mammary gland of lactating rats subjected to suctional stimuli of different intensities. We made used of Wistar rats subdivided in 3 groups: Group A: each lactating 8 pups; Group B: 8 days before the birth we provided to hide the nipples of a half of the breasts with sutures like tobacco-pouch. The animals were anesthetized with ether. Each rat lactates 4 pups. Group C: They do not lactate. In the 6th day of suckling we took away the newborn from theirs mothers for 8 Hours and then we put them to lactate for other 4 hours. After this period we removed the mammary glands. We prepared this material as the routine methods for optical microscopy and after wards we stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. Direct relationship is demonstrated between the intensity of suctional stimulus and morphologically evaluated synthetic activity.

[Importance of sucking stimulation in lactation: ultrastructural aspects of mammary glands in the rat].

The Authors refer the results of a study concerning the mammary glands of lactating rats. We made use of rats Wistar subdivided in three groups. Group A: each rat lactates 8 pups. Group B: each rat lactates 4 pups. 8 days before delivery we provided to hide the nipples of a half of breasts with sutures. Group C: They do not lactate. In the 6th day of suckling, after a period of intense suction, we removed the mammary glands. This material was processed for electronic microscopy. Morphological aspects obtained show a difference in development of cytoplasmatic organs specially manifest in R.E.R. and Golgian apparatus.

Projections from the visual cortical region of the superior temporal sulcus to the striatum and claustrum in the macaque monkey.

Solutions of tritiated aminoacids were injected into the visual cortical region hidden in the depth of the superior temporal sulcus (STs) of the macaque monkey. Injection sites involved the middle temporal visual area, extending into the surrounding visual cortices. Projections were found homolaterally in both the striatum and claustrum. In the caudate nucleus labeled material affected mainly the body and spread both to the tail and the head of the nucleus. Label was also seen in the caudal third of the putamen and in the postero-ventral claustrum. Compared with the scarcity of afferents arising from occipital visual areas, the present data point to a heavy projection system from additional visual areas of the STs to the basal ganglia in the macaque monkey.

[Ultrastructural changes in the mammary gland of the lactating rat induced by treatment with bromocriptine].

The authors report the results of their ultrastructural study on the lactating mammary gland of the rat treated with bromocriptine. On the sixth day of treatment the mammary gland shows the same morphological features of the physiologically involuting mammary gland and the same morphological features of the mammary gland of the rat whose pups have been taken away. These results suggest that the pharmacologic treatment with bromocriptine induces a physiological involution of the lactating mammary gland in the rat and that the same drug abates the effect of the persisting suckling stimulus.

Changes in endonuclease activity and in chromatin structure of rat hepatocytes during fetal and neonatal life.

A developmental study of rat hepatic endonuclease has been performed. Nuclei, from different stages of hepatocyte maturation, were analyzed for endogenous endonuclease activity. The chromatin extracted from these nuclei does not show any fragmentation during the first 17 days of fetal development. On the 18th day of fetal life there is a massive increase in specific endonuclease activity. At birth this activity reaches a maximum level (3.5 units/mg DNA); thereafter it undergoes a gradual decrease. The size of the basic DNA repeats produced by the endonuclease action is 218.9 +/- 1.6 in 18-day-old fetuses and decreases to 204.9 +/- 2.5 in 19-day-old fetuses, a value which remains constant in the following fetal and postnatal life. This difference in monomer size is due to changes in the chromatin structure. Micrococcal nuclease digests show that the "nucleosome core" does not change during hepatocyte development. Therefore, the difference in size of the endonuclease DNA fragments must be due to the linker regions.

Indoprofen in rheumatic patients with acute episodes: a multicentre trial.

The results are reported of an open multicentre trial in 228 rheumatic patients with flare-ups. Fourteen centres adopting the same investigational protocol collaborated in the study. Indoprofen was administered for 1 week at a daily dosage of 1000 mg according to a treatment schedule used with success in acute gouty arthritis: a 400 mg i.v. bolus was followed by 200 mg (1 tablet) t.i.d. Subjective (pain) and objective variables were used for reliable assessment of activity. Marked reduction of pain intensity was already noticeable on day 1 of treatment and was followed by progressive improvement in subjective and objective variables for all the diagnoses considered. According to the patients' own overall assessments, results were good or very good in more than 50% of cases. The best outcomes were obtained in low back pain, acute gout and psoriatic arthritis. At the end of treatment only 7.4% of patients experienced no change or deterioration of symptoms. Adverse reactions, consisting mostly of mild and reversible gastrointestinal disturbances, were reported by 9.2% of patients, but only in 1.8% was treatment discontinued. Indoprofen administered according to the above schedule is an appropriate treatment for acute episodes of rheumatic diseases.
