Vitamin status in patients with chronic renal failure.

Many factors complicate the effort for a recommendation on individual vitamin requirements in CRF. On the basis of our present incomplete knowledge about the handling of vitamins in uremia, suggestions for appropriate supplementation only of water-soluble vitamins are given. Patients with advanced CRF without dialysis treatment should receive daily supplements of vitamin B6 (5 mg), ascorbic acid (70-100 mg), and the normal recommended daily allowance of the other water-soluble vitamins in addition to the vitamin intake from the diet. We give folic acid only in patients taking antifolate drugs or in combination with iron in iron deficiency state and anemia (1 tablet of Folicombin contains 0.5 mg folic acid and 0.4 g elemental iron). There is still a pressing need for more data on the vitamin status, on vitamin requirements, and on long-term effects of vitamin administration in CRF.

[Noninvasive examination methods in the detection of right heart hypertrophy in children with mucoviscidosis].

Pulmonary hypertension with right ventricular hypertrophy (Cor pulmonale) is a critical complication in cystic fibrosis patients. Early detection and therapy might decrease mortality. Noninvasive diagnostic methods as vector-ECG, m-mode echocardiography and thallium myocardial scintigraphy were performed in 50 children with cystic fibrosis to determine the degree of right ventricular hypertrophy.

[Therapeutic results in uterine sarcoma (1955-1985)].

This is a retrospective analysis of prognostic factors and treatment outcomes in 126 uterine sarcoma cases from the period of 1955 to 1985 inclusively. Up to now there lacks unanimity and extensive scientific based therapeutic concept; and treatment results could not be improved despite better operative and radiation therapy possibilities. From the examined charts and materials, the five year survival rate achieved for all stages is 31%. The mean age of the patients is 57.9 years and significant prognostic differences will be appreciated only in relation to the clinical stages at the commencement of therapy and also after local total operative intervention (stages I and II) in conjunction with postoperative radiation therapy. The difference in course in relation to the histologic tumour type can not be statistically verified.

Effect of substance P on the membrane potential of rat adrenal chromaffin cells.

The effect of substance P on the membrane potential of adrenal chromaffin cells from rats was investigated in tissue slices. At a concentration of 10(-7) M, substance P caused a significant depolarization of the chromaffin cell membrane from -27.5 +/- 1.9 mV to -17.9 +/- 1.30 mV. These results suggest that substance P may have a direct excitatory effect on adrenal chromaffin cell membranes.

[Central neurotoxic side effects following cisplatin therapy].

A 48 years old patient underwent a surgical treatment because of ovarian carcinoma developed different central neurotoxic events after chemotherapy with longer time known drugs as well as after Cis-platin-application.

[Use of automatic frequency analysis in the therapy of patients with acute ischemic insults].

A series of EEG reading by automatic frequency analysis by means of Fast-Fourier transformation was taken, with a total of thirteen patients with acute ischemic infarction. Of the parameters under test, the total power-parameters, the relative performances of the delta and alpha wavebands, the delta/alpha index, and the alpha peak frequency variation proved their suitability in assessing clinical progress and in lateral localisation. Automatic frequency analysis adds to the range of tools available for EEG diagnosis, and can play its part in trend analysis during intensive therapy.
