Infant respiration monitoring--evaluation of a simple home monitor.

A new, inexpensive commercial infant respiration monitor, the Baby-Sitter by Direct Diagnostics Ltd, has been evaluated and subjected to clinical trial. Dual respiration recordings were made from infants exhibiting apnoeic episodes to compare the new monitor with an acceptable reference monitor (Graesby Medical Model MR10). Both monitors are designed to detect respiration movement by means of pressure pulses produced in an air-filled sensor attached to the infant's abdomen. The new monitor is found to have unacceptable performance.

Computerized record system for electro-medical equipment management.

Commercial data-base software with a business-type microcomputer (Commodore 8096) has been used for filing electro-medical equipment inventory information. The operational experience of this system as an aid to comprehensive equipment management is described.

Technical note: electrosurgery active lead failures.

A cause of electrosurgical burns in surgical procedures is faulty active leads. A survey of faults and modes of failures are reported. The design of a meter is given for use by a sterilizing department to enable leads to be checked. Using the criterion of two times the original resistance, 35 cables were found to be defective out of a population of about 200 cables. About half of these cables transmitted radio frequency (RF) power inefficiently: often power was intermittent and hot spots would develop. The commonest mode of failure was a break between the socket and the wire at the forceps end. Rejection criteria are reviewed and we suggest a resistance less than 0.3 omega.

Evaluation of Makita electric drills for orthopaedic surgery.

The problems associated with the use of air drills in orthopaedic surgery are briefly reviewed. Battery-powered electric drills offer an alternative but they can introduce a different set of problems. We have investigated procedures for using a Makita, non-medical battery-powered drill in orthopaedic surgery and can conclude that, within certain limits, this drill is an alternative to an air drill with the advantage of absence of air hoses and the potential for cost-saving.

A bed-mounted mobile intensive-care unit.

The provision of intensive-care facilities for patients in transit can present problems. We describe our novel approach to these in which we have added facilities to a standard bed which is used for the transfer of patients. This may also be a cost-effective method of providing intensive-care equipment to beds at any location.
