Determination of antitrypsin activity on agar plates: relationship between antitrypsin and biological value of soybean for trout.

A new method is described for determination of antitrypsin activity based on inhibition of trypsin solubilization of calcium caseinate in agar plates. The method was applied to analyze soybeans after graded heat treatments for their antitrypsin content. Biological determination of protein and energy values of the soybean samples showed direct correlation of these values with the destruction of antitrypsin as measured by the new method, using rainbow trout.

M-plasty techniques.

Conventional closure of surgical defects in skin may cause unsightly protrusions (dog ears). Fusiform excisions with angles of 30 degrees or less reduce protrusion but may require excision of larger volumes and lengths of healthy skin and subcutaneous tissue than may be desirable. M-plasties reduce these requirements while still allowing use of 30 degrees angles at maximum. Applications and technical details are described and illustrated.

Systemic lupus erythematosus causing subglottic stenosis.

Acute lupus erythematosus has manifested itself in many ways. Symptoms most often pertain to polyarthritis, arthralgias, skin lesions and those attributed to lupus nephritis. Recently documented lesions have been seen in the nose and larynx. The following case report shows evidence of subglottic stenosis due to SLE.

Promontory dehiscence: a case report.

Dehiscence of the bony promontory without preoperative fistula formation occurred in a patient with a history of chronic otitis media and perforation of the tympanic membrane without cholesteatoma.

A rapid technique for the cleaning and concentration of Eimeria oocysts.

A technique using 1% sodium bicarbonate, ether and centrifugation was developed for cleaning oocyts of Eimeria tenella, E. maxima or E. mivati. The speed and efficiency of this technique was compared with the sedimentation technique currently used in many laboratories. Parameters measured were percent sporulation after cleaning and number of oocysts recovered. Suspensions of oocysts cleaned by bicarbonate and ether consistently yielded a similar or superior percent sporulation. In four of the five trials bicarbonate and ether recovered a larger number of oocysts from feces. To determine the storage stability of oocysts cleaned with bicarbonate and ether in comparison with sedimentation cleaned oocysts, suspensions of Eimeria tenella and E. mivati were stored at 4 degrees C. and atssayed initially after harvest and a three month intervals thereafter. The parameters of bird weight gain, lesion score, mortality and feed conversion were measured to test viability of oocysts. Bicarbonate and ether cleaning had no initial deleterious effect on oocyst viability. After 6 months storage, oocysts of Eimeria cleaned with bicarbonate and ether maintained viability similar or superior to oocysts cleaned by sedimentation.

Serum dopamine beta-hydroxylase activity following subarachnoid hemorrhage in man.

Serum dopamine beta-hydroxylase activity was followed in seven patients who had experienced primary subarachnoid hemorrhage resulting from a ruptured intracranial aneurysm. This preliminary study suggested that dopamine beta-hydroxylase levels were initially elevated following subarachnoid hemorrhage, after which they progressively declined during the first week post hemorrhage. After a minimum was reached, the activity rose again to a stable level two to three weeks post hemorrhage.
