Two hundred and seventy-one (76%) out of 358 survivors of infarction were discharged by the eighth hospital day, and 251 (93%) of them survived to six weeks after discharge. Six of the 20 patients who died between discharge and six weeks did so after readmission and 14 died as outpatients. All these patients who died at home had transmural infarction and four had diabetes. In inpatients successful resuscitation occurred mainly within the first 48 hours, with only three successful long-term results from all the patients who suffered arrest later. This suggests that more prolonged inpatient care would not have reduced the late mortality. These figures justify continuing with an early discharge policy for most patients, but coronary care should probably be more prolonged for patients with diabetes.

Five male patients, complaining of daytime sleep attacks, and hav ing a history of automatic behavior, were recorded continously by polygraph for 108 h under two different protocols: (1ents were given specific tests to perform during Phase 1. Six normal males were run as controls during Phase . At the end of the recordings, patients had measurements of homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5 Hydroxy-indol Acetic Acid (5HIAA) in CSF before and after Probenecid testing. Patients appeared to present an abnormal sleep structure, with lack of Stage 3 and 4 NREM sleep, but had no significant increase in total sleep time during 24 h compared to normals. They also had repetitive very short periods of "micro-sleep" which account for their automatic behavior and were responsible for their great decrement in performance compared to normal controls. No CSF HVA and 5HIAA abnormality could be detected. This syndrome, which greatly impairs the social life and working ability of the patients, may be more related to an impairment of the "wakefulness" structures than to a dysfunction of the "sleep" structures.
Nucleic acid preparations from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (Smith & Townsend) Conn. have been tested for tumorigenic activity on a number of bioassay systems including carrot root explants, sunflower and tobacco stem segments, callus cultures of sunflower, tobacco and carrot, and sunflower stems. The methods used to isolate and test the DNA included those which have been reported to be successful for the induction of tumours. Strict precautions were taken to ensure that the DNA samples used in the tests were free of viable bacterial cells. In the large number of tests carried out under various experimental conditions there was no evidence for the induction of tumours with bacterial DNA.
We measured distribution of radioactivity among urinary metabolites excreted in nonpregnant and ovariectomized sows after intravenous injection of radionuclides (14carbon) labeled estrone, estradiol-17beta, cortisol, and corticosterone. Treatment with an enzyme preparation (Glusulase) containing both beta-glucuronidase and sulfatase activity, rendered extractable over 95% of the radioactivity recovered from urine with diethyl ether (estrogens) and ethyl acetate (corticoids). Only an additional 1 to 4% of the radioactivity was extracted following solvolysis of the aqueous residue remaining after enzyme hydrolysis and extraction. Radioactivity in nonpregnant sow urine was predominantly in the estrone fraction following injection of either estrone or estradiol-17beta. Moreover, the principal metabolite was estrone monoglucuronide. Only traces of estradiol-17beta and an estriol-like compound were detected. Two other isolates contained radioactivity. One compound probably was 2-methoxyestrone, but structure of the other compound (X1) could not be established. The principal urinary metabolites from injection of cortisol corresponded to chromatographic properties of tetrahydrocortisol and tetrahydrocortisone. Both metabolites were low in urine following injection of corticosterone. The major urinary metabolites from corticosterone injection corresponded to chromatographic properties of tetrahydrocorticosterone and corticosterone. Considerable radioactivity from injection of both corticoids was isolated in the cortol, cortolone, and 11-ketoetiocholanolone - 11beta-hydroxyetiocholanolone areas of chromatograms. The data for corticoids agree with similar data for the human being and cow.
