To ensure eruption of the dentition in patients with cleidocranial dysostosis, close collatoration between the oral surgeon and the orthodontist is essential to determine the sequence of extraction, the teeth to be ligated, the preferred technique of ligation, and the approach for surgical exposure.

Using hamster cells in culture, the radiosensitizing and cytotoxic properties of 8 electron-affinic drugs have been compared. These include nitrofurans derivatives as well as 2 and 5-nitroimidazoles. Most work has been performed with misonidazole for which it appears that, at 37 degree C, the concentration of drug required to produce a given level of cell killing is inversely proportional to the square of the exposure time. Misonidazole was also compared with X-rays for its ability to produce neoplastic transformations in vitro, using the C3H 10T 1/2 cell line.

Reported is the case of a well-circumscribed radiopaque ameloblastoma of the maxilla. Treatment was by means of a conservative partial resection of the maxilla. The procedure was successful in completely removing the tumor mass without causing any noticeable facial disfigurement. Long-term follow-up was stressed to the patient for early detection of any recurrence.
We have previously shown in the anaesthetized rabbit that the ventilatory response to an increase in Paco2 is greater if that increase is produced by intravenous infusion of hypercapnic blood than by inhalation of CO2 (Linton et al., 1976). The present set of experiments was designed to investigate the reason for this. It was found that the difference in ventilatory response observed in the intact rabbit was abolished by cutting the carotid sinus nerves or by eliminating the pH/Paco2 oscillations in the carotid blood flow. It is concluded that the normally greater ventilatory response to intravenous infusion of hypercapnic blood compared with inhalation of CO2 is due to a respiratory signal derived from Paco2 oscillations and carried in the carotid sinus nerves.

1. Leucine-enkephalin and some analogues were assayed for activity in vitro on the mouse vas deferens and for binding to opiate receptors from rat brain. 2. The experimental data were analysed in terms of the stringency for glycine, a D-amino acid or an L-amino acid at each position in the peptide. 3. The observed configurational specificity was compared with the stringency that would be predicted to occur if enkephalin adopted certain hydrogen-bonded conformations at the receptor. 4. A small subset of the conformations examined was found to be compatible with the experimental data.
The response of chick intestine to vitamin D and its metabolites was studied in an organ culture preparation of chick ileum explants. Both 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OHD(3)) at a concentration of 20 ng/ml or greater and 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25-(OH)(2)D(3)] at a concentration of 50 pg/ml or greater stimulated the rate of accumulation of [(32)P]phosphate and (45)Ca by the explants and the incorporation of [(3)H]thymidine into DNA. The accumulation of [(32)P]phosphate by the explants was against a concentration gradient and inhibited by ouabain and dinitrophenol. Two saturable mechanisms appeared to mediate the cellular accumulation of phosphate with K(a) of 0.0047 and 0.125 mM, respectively. The V(max) of the lower affinity transport mechanism was accelerated by 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3). Actinomycin D (5.0 mug/ml) did not block the intestinal response to 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3) stimulation of both [(32)p]phosphate and (45)Ca accumulation. Significant stimulation of [(32)P]phosphate accumulation was observed 30 min after the addition of 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3), preceding the sterol-induced increase in the rate of (45)Ca uptake by 30 min and the sterol-induced increase in [(3)H]thymidine incorporation into DNA by 150 min. Increasing extracellular phosphate concentration to 3.0 mM increased [(3)H]thymidine incorporation into DNA and the rate of (45)Ca uptake by the explants. Reducing extracellular phosphate concentration to 0.05 mM attenuated the response of the explants to 1,25-(OH)(2)D(3). From these observations it is postulated that the primary action of vitamin D sterols in the intestine is to enhance the ability of the mucosal cell to accumulate phosphate. The data suggest that restoration of intracellular phosphate levels may then permit expression of the cells' response to vitamin D sterols.

Treatment of obesity with human chorionic gonadotrophin was shown to be of no better value than saline in a double-blind crossover study of weight reduction in obese subjects. There was also no significant difference in mood, hunger, or missed injections, and no apparent difference in adherence to diet when the two agents were compared. In contrast, a significant difference was found in the ability of subjects to lose weight in the first four weeks of the study in contrast with the second four weeks, no matter which agent was used. Thus, the initiation of a new therapeutic program, even using an inert agent, has a temporary benefit--a manifestation both of placebo effect and the Hawthorne effect.
