A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis was developed for propylthiouracil in plasma (1 ml). After protein precipitation with acetonitrile, the solution was diluted with water and injected into a liquid chromatograph equipped with C-18 and C-8 columns in series. The peak area was linear over the 0.25-10-mg/liter range, and the recovery was 101 +/- 4.5%. This assay has the advantages of specificity, simplicity, and speed over previously published methods and requires smaller sample volumes. None of 19 drugs tested interfered with the assay.

Using cultured normal hamster embryo cells and the heterploid mouse C3H cell line 10T1/2, clone 8, we have studied the effect of the protease inhibitor antipain on x-ray-induced neoplastic transformation. We found in both cell systems that, while there was no effect on cell survival as compared to irradiated controls, the addition of antipain at a concentration of 6 microgram/ml to the cultures 24 hr prior to irradiation resulted in enhanced transformation as compared to the frequency in cultures exposed to radiation alone. Yet the addition of antipain to cultures 10 min after irradiation resulted in a decreased transformation rate. This decrease was not found when antipain was added to the mouse cells 24 hr after irradiation or to the hamster cells 48 hr after irradiation. These results suggest that the protease inhibitor antipain has more than one mechanism of action in modulating the fixation and expression of transformation by x-irradiation, possibly by the modification of DNA repair.

The transformation of Lennert's lymphoma into histiocytic lymphoma appears to be part of the natural history of the disorder rather than therapeutically induced. Unusual paranuclear nonmembrane-bound filamentous inclusions were found in many of the neoplastic cells in the histiocytic lymphoma. We report evidence for the immunoglobulin nature of this material, indicating a B cell origin of the neoplasm.
The Instrumental Enrichment program, designed to modify the cognitive structures of retarded, disadvantaged adolescents, was contrasted with a General Enrichment program both in a residential setting and a day center. This study is based on 57 matched pairs drawn from the total research sample of 218 adolescents. One group in a residential center (n = 24) and one group in a day center (n = 33) received Instrumental Enrichment; one group in a residential center (n = 24) and one group in a day center (n = 33) received General Enrichment. The Instrumental Enrichment program extended over 2 years, and the subjects were pre- and posttested on a battery of criterion measures: general and specific cognitive tests, scholastic achievement, classroom interaction, and self-concept. The results indicated significantly better performance by the groups receiving Instrumental Enrichment than by the groups receiving General Enrichment on the tests of specific cognitive functions and scholastic achievement and on some of the classroom interaction scales. Results for the residential groups compared with the day-center groups revealed significant differences on the tests of scholastic achievement, in favor of the residential groups and on the classroom interaction scales in favor of the day-center groups.

Many types of microaggregate filter are now obtainable for use in blood transfusion. The aim, indication and potential advantage of microaggregate filtration for the patient are discussed. The Pall and Swank microaggregate filters are considered the filters of choice today, expecially with regard to the number of blood conserves which can be filtered.
An 80-year-old black male with gastric adenocarcinoma, liver metastases, and parathyroid adenomas also had a rhabdomyoma of the anterior-superior mediastinum. This appears to be the first reported case of mediastinal rhabdomyoma in the literature. The ultrastructural demonstration of haphazardly arranged myofilaments with prominent Z bands and the absence of demosomes indicates that it is of extra-cardiac type. The probable origin of this tumor from the myoid cells of the thymus is discussed.

Anaesthesia for nine patients with the carcinoid syndrome is described. With the exception of one case in which severe bronchospasm and hypertension occurred, complications were minor. Steroids, aprotonin and methotrimeprazine appear to be useful agents in the management of such patients. An anaesthetic technique employing thiopentone, pancuronium and nitrous oxide proved satisfactory.
