Plasma galactocerebrosides in multiple sclerosis.

Plasma cerebrosides were examined in 12 cases of multiple sclerosis which were compared to normal controls and patients with cerebrovascular accidents. A screening was performed so as to select patients with levels above to normal by means of thin-layer chromatography of the lipid extract. Glucose seems to be the only hexose to be found normally in plasma cerebrosides. The presence of galactocerebrosides may be a biological test for demyelination, as their presence seems to be related to the evolutionary state of multiple sclerosis. In a severe cerebrovascular accident, galactocerebrosides were also found.

[Late neurosyphilis: a current disease].

We report 7 cases of neurosyphilis observed over a 13-month period in a Parisian University Hospital. Four patients had meningo-encephalitis and 3 had arteritis with meningitis. Serology for the human immuno-deficiency virus was negative in all cases. The problems raised by the interpretation of serological data are discussed and the criteria of progressive neurosyphilis are underlined.

[Adrenomyeloneuropathy in adults. Relationship with adrenoleukodystrophy in children (author's transl)].

The case reported concerns a man in whom appeared gradually, since the age of twenty-seven years, difficulty in walking and sexual impotence. The neurological syndrome consisted of pyramidal signs and objective sensory disorders of the lower limbs, intermittent sphincter disorders and mild mental deterioration, which was progressive. Biopsy of a sensory nerve showed rarefaction of myelinated fibres. The endocrine syndrome consisted of peripheral adrenal insufficiency, which was undoubted but with biologic evidence only. There was no response of plasma cortisol during five stimulation tests with tetracosactide and there was a gradual rise in plasma A.C.T.H. The clinical picture was thus that of an adrenomyeloneuropathy.
