[Argon laser coagulation in exudative senile macular degeneration].

In 26 of 76 eyes with exudative senile macular degeneration, visual acuity improved after argon laser coagulation. However, in most cases the improvement was only of short duration. The treatment was of greater benefit in cases with serous pigment epithelial detachment where there was no subretinal neovascular membrane.

[Macular edema due to posterior vitreous detachment--observations with fluorescein angiography].

Description of five characteristic cases of macular edema caused by senile posterior vitreous detachment. Fluorescein angiography revealed no abnormalities and the macula remained devoid of significant changes. In cases where a fluorescein leakage in the macular area was found, a thick preretinal fibrosis occurred after several months with a decrease in visual acuity, which was initially good.

[Ophthalmodynamometry in senile macular degeneration].

The pressure in the ophthalmic artery was measured in two groups of patients - a group of 69 with "dry" and one of 78 with "wet" senile macular degeneration. The pressure was measured during posture change from supine to sitting, with Müller's ophthalmodynamometer. The findings were compared with those obtained in 57 healthy elderly subjects. In the group of 69 patients the drop in pressure was greater than in the control group, and in the group of 78 patients it was much greater, averaging 18.6% in systole and 20.2% in diastole.

[Comparative studies with mesoptometer and nyktometer ].

Mesoptometer Model I (Oculus) and Nyktometer (Rodenstock) were compared monocularly in 328 eyes. The individual measurements varied widely, more so for mesopic vision with dazzle than for mesopic vision without dazzle. When the results were classified in accordance with the normal limits proposed by the German Ophthalmological Society there was good correlation between the two instruments. The results fell into the same category in about 85% of the cases.

[Temporary blindness as a symptoms of circulatory disorder].

Patients with amaurosis fugax (transient monocular blindness) have been studied including an ophthalmodynamometry. In most of the cases there were general circulatory disturbances with marked orthostatic decrease of the ophthalmic pressure, and comparatively seldom carotid stenosis and hypertension.

[Retinal hemorrhage associated with retinal artery macroaneurysm (author's transl)].

A report on four cases of an isolated aneurysm of a major retinal artery branch accompanied by retinal hemorrhage and edema (so-called macroaneurysm of the retinal arteries (Robertson)]. In two cases an indirect argon laser coagulation was performed, which facilitated absorption of the associated macular edema and rapidly improved visual acuity.

[Fluorescein fundus angiography and laser coagulation in central serous chorioretinitis].

100 cases of central serous chorioretinitis with fluorescein leakage treatment with and without argon laser coagulation was compared. Final visual acuity was significantly better, and the duration of disease shorter, in the 61 patients who underwent coagulation than in the 39 who did not. Laser coagulation was especially effective in the cases with leakage in the upper macular region.
