[Comparison of telethermography and electromyography in instrumental symptomologic evaluation of the anterior temporalis and the masseter].

In 10 young subjects without pain or tenderness over the masseter and anterior temporal muscles left and right, skin surface temperature was measured over the area of these muscles, these subjects then underwent to an electromyographic examination for masseters and temporals. The findings obtained by these two different diagnostic tools were compared. From these comparison it comes out that in a large percentage of our sample they showed the same diagnostic result.

[Structure and ultrastructure of the human TMJ meniscus].

This ultrastructural study is concerned on demonstrating the presence and the distribution of the elastic system fibers in human TMJ disc. Oxytalan and pre-elastic fibers were found to occur in the anterior, intermediate and posterior band of the disc. These fibers run parallel to collagen fibers in the outer portion of the disc while in the deeper portion they were canted compared to collagen fibers arrangement. The presence of an elastic system fibers in human TMJ disc it is plausible to assume that it enables the disc to resist to a wider range of reversible deformation.

[Evaluation of cervical vertebrae for determination of skeletal age].

The relationship among cervical vertebral maturation and skeletal, dental and chronological ages were assessed by the Authors in lateral cephalometric, hand and orthopantomographic x-rays on 72 italian young subjects from 10 to 15 years of age. Statistically significant correlations were found between cervical vertebral maturation and skeletal age both in males and females, while vertebrae age was correlated with dental and chronological ages only in the females.

[Epidemiological survey of craniomandibular dysfunction in young thalassemia major patients].

40 patients with talassemia major treated with blood transfusions were studied by the Authors. The aim of this study was to evaluate tmj signs and symptoms, according to Helkimo questionnaire. From the data collected in this investigation it comes out that clinical signs are more frequent in older subjects, in fact 27% of young patients aged from 9 to 13 years showed at least one clinical sign of dysfunction; on the other hand in the younger patients (aged from 6 to 9 years) dysfunctions were found only in 16% of subjects.

[Skeletal growth of young thalassemia major patients treated with intensive transfusion].

The AA. have carried out an investigation on skeletal maturation of children and adolescent with thalassemia major. The data collected in this investigation seem to indicate that skeletal age is quite similar to cronological age in the subjects studied. Furthermore any difference statistically significant as far as growth has been observed between males and of females in our sample.

[Evaluation of psychological factors in the etiopathogenesis of craniomandibular dysfunction in preadolescent and adolescent patients].

The Authors have studied the psychological characteristics of 48 subjects of whom 17 with signs and symptoms of dysfunction, 12 only with signs of dysfunction and 19 without any dysfunction. From the data collected in our investigation it's possible to assume that there isn't difference (F test) about the psychological profile between this 3 groups of subjects.

[Histology of the cartilage of the human fetal condyle].

The Authors have examined with optical microscopy the articular cartilages from the supero-posterior area of the mandibular condyles of ten TMJ of 5 human fetuses. In this study have been shown the cellular components of the 3 outer areas of the condyle. Further it has been pointed out that the fibrous lining of the cartilage is not only composed of collagen fibrils, proteoglycans and fibroblasts but also contains elastic fibers.

[Epidemiological survey of the prevalence of dental caries in young thalassemia major patients].

47 patients with thalassemia major treated with blood transfusions were studied by the authors. The aim was to carry out an investigation on caries incidence. From the data collected in this investigation it was found that 90% of males and 66% of females showed caries, then there was a difference in percentage of caries between males and females. On the other hand the dmf and the DMF index showed quite the same values in males and in females.

[Light microscope study of human dental morphogenesis].

Human teeth morphogenesis was studied by optical microscopy from the 10th to 20th week of fetal life. Enamel, dentin and pulp development were analyzed. An important observation on mandibu teeth arises from this investigation that consists in a biforcation of mandibular ossification in two branches, this could allow to the teeth to develop inside the mandibular arch.

[Chronic prophylaxis of urinary tract infections in diabetic patients].

A mass screening of 600 diabetic revealed 240 (190 female and 50 male) with urinary infections. The comparative antibiotic efficacy (elimination) and tolerability of Cinoxacin and Norfloxacin were assessed in the treatment of these patients. The traditional protocol (2 daily doses for 10-20 days) was supplemented in every case by chronic prophylaxis (a single daily dose for 10 days each month for 6 months) that was designed to prevent recurrences and the development of chronic urinary infections. Cinoxacin was always found to be faster acting in antibacterial terms than Norfloxacin (at 10 days x2 = p less than 0.01; at 2 degrees, 4 degrees, and 6 degrees month x2 = p less than 0.05) providing a more complete and faster remission of the subjective symptoms, as well as being considerably better tolerated a both locally and systematically than Norfloxacin.

[Evaluation of lateral norms of facial biotype in a group of young patients with hypodontia].

In a group of 620 patients prevalence of tooth agenesis correlated to jaw relationship was studied. Skeletal patterns of the patients with the tooth agenesis were diagnosed by means of lateral cephalograms according to Ricketts, Jarabak, Riedel and Cagliari School analysis. The prevalence of Class Ist skeletal relationship and skeletal deep-bite appeared to be significantly more frequent in patients with hypodontia.

[Changes in the TMJ in the intrauterine and extrauterine period of life].

The aim of this work is the study of hte prenatal and postnatal development of the human temporomandibular joint. Ten of human embryos and fetuses and six joint of young children were sectioned sagittally and frontally, decalcified where necessary and stained using Mallory and Cajall-Callengo techniques. At the eighteen gestational week the condylar blastema became evident, the temporal blastema appeared later. At the twenty-second week all the structure of the joint were present, but the morphogenesis was not completed as one could observe from the preparations the Meckel's cartilage. A key observation from the study of features and embryos was that the condylar cartilage wasn't uniformly distributed on the condylar surface bur it was located in posterior-lateral area. At birth TMJ showed some characteristics typical of this period such as : a flat temporal component a disc with blood vessels and a condyle with connective-vascular channels. These characteristics will disappear later in the life at about 3-5 years.
