Virus-like particles (VLP) have been identified by electronmicroscopy in the skeletal muscles (paraxials) of six cases of idiopathic scoliosis. These particles closely resembled VLP reported in the skeletal muscles in other conditions, e.g. Reye's syndrome, polymyositis, malignant hyperthermia, and chronic myopathy. We have shown by specific staining that these structures are composed of glycogen in a crystalline form. Using Coxsackie B infected tissue culture cells as a control we have shown that these viruses, which are of similar shape and size to the VLP, were unstained using this specific staining method.
The processing and analysis of images in a computer often requires the selection of particular features of a complex image for more detailed study. Sometimes such decisions are empirical, in which case it would be extremely difficult to describe a rigorous algorithm for detecting these features automatically in a computer. In this situation graphic tablets can be very useful as they allow an operator to use experience in deciding which features are to be transferred into a computer. A tablet is described which uses a conductive glass plate and pencil probe. A number of subroutines are available in a general purpose program for conventional processing, calculation and displays to be effected by simple option selection on the tablet for specific applications in cell growth, modeling and three dimensional reconstruction of serial sections, special programs were developed which could include appropriate subroutines. The categorisation of subsections by an operator was particularly useful in allowing different methods of analysis and display to be applied to each. For example they could be displayed separately or given different dentisy levels by choosing the appropriate option in the program.
When the chromosomes of the Indian muntjac, Muntiacus muntjak, were compared following treatment with two presently used banding methods, trypsin-Giemsa (G) and quinacrine-hydrochloride (Q) with structural bands as seen in the electron microscope, definite correlations were observed with respect to the numbers and positions of individual bands. - Weights obtained for the individual chromosomes were: No. 1, 9.98 pg; No. 2, 4.10 pg; No. 3, 4.43 pg; No. 3-X, 5.05 pg; and Y, 0.55 pg. Average diameters and weights for individual fibers were 193 A and 8.74 times 10-16 g/micron, respectively, for stimulated metaphase chromosomes and 185 A and 8.73 times 10-16 g/micron, respectively, for unstimulated chromosomes. Fibers of interphase nuclei exhibited an average diameter of 191 A and a weight of 5.87 times 10-16 g/micron. - The total amound of nuclear DNA present in interphase nuclei was 3.88 pg.

Research has demonstrated that confusing styles of parental communication--"communication deviances" (CD)--are associated with cognitive disorder in offspring. The present study examined the immediate effects of adult communication clarity versus deviance on sixty-one 11- to 15-year-old male and female adolescents with learning disabilities (LD). Subjects were randomly assigned to complete the Rorschach Arrangement Task (RorAT) under conditions of either clear (n = 30) or unclear (n = 31) instructions from an adult. Immediately thereafter, the adolescents were administered a test of abstract thinking--The Twenty Questions Task (TQT). Strategies used to solve the task were assessed. As hypothesized, adolescents in the clear communication condition performed significantly better on the RorAT and used more efficient cognitive strategies on the TQT than did adolescents in the unclear communication condition. A new theory with implications for teaching and parenting is proposed for understanding the influence of adult communication on students with LD.
