The use of an electronic thermometer in intraoral temperature measurement.

The applicability of an electronic thermometer CRAFTEMP in taking intraoral temperatures was determined. Sublingal temperatures in ten young subjects with complete natural dentitions, and the temperatures at the denture base-mucosa interface and on the polished surface of both maxillary and mandibular complete dentures in ten elderly patients were measured. The results showed that there was a temperature difference between the polished surface of the maxillary denture and the denture base-mucosa interface. This was statistically significant in the female but not in the male subjects. No temperature difference could be demonstrated with any of the mandibular dentures. The CRAFTEMP was found to be a convenient and reliable method for intraoral temperature measurement.

The measurement of the setting characteristics of rigid autopolymerizing resins for direct use in the oral cavity.

Differential scanning calorimetry has been used with success to determine working and setting times of autopolymerizing denture and orthodontic base resins. The technique is considered to be far more suitable for this task than thermal methods which are influenced by specimen geometry and heat transfer. Since only a few milligrams of material are required the technique would be suitable for other dental materials whose setting characteristics are of interest.

Pressures recorded at the denture base-mucosal surface interface in complete denture wearers.

This study reports on pressures recorded at the denture base-mucosal surface interface in four edentulous subjects. Four sites were selected, namely (a) the midpalatal region in the upper complete denture, (b) the labial to the mid-line lower complete denture, (c) directly under the lower left and (d) right first molar teeth. The study examined the reproducibility of the pressure values obtained when the subjects chewed two test foods (carrot and peanut). The subjects repeated the chewing sequences on the same day and one subject was tested over a 3-day period. The younger subjects and subjects with the shortest chewing sequences gave the most reproducible results. The two foods were shown to have different effects both on the pressure values recorded and the duration of the chewing sequence. Patients who transferred the food bolus from side to side during the chewing sequence affected the reproducibility of the results obtained from the lower denture transducers.

Stereochemistry of poly(methyl methacrylate) acrylic resin denture base material.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) 13C has been used to determine the tacticity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base materials. Curing cycle has no effect on tacticity. A tendency towards a mainly syndiotactic arrangement is shown. Industrially produced PMMA showed the same tacticity as the dental products.
