[Intestinal lipodystrophy (M. Whipple). Synopsis of radiology, endoscopy and histology].

The case of a 48 years old man with intestinal lipodystrophy (Whipple's disease) is clinically, roentgenologically, endoscopically and histologically documented. The diagnosis was established by endoscopic biopsy and laparatomy. The patho-histologic changes of the mucosa of the proximal small bowel are pathognomonic. Roentgenologically the characteristic mucosal and lymphadenoid changes can be demonstrated as well as the extent of the process.

[Therapy of fresh fibular ligament ruptures].

In a prospective, random study carried out at the Casualty Clinic of the University Hospital of Hannover from 15 April 1986 to 31 July 1986, 200 patients were randomly selected from four treatment groups, according to treatment: operative-immobilized (group A, n = 52), operative-functional (group B, n = 50), conservative-immobilized (group C, n = 48) and conservative-functional (group D, n = 50). Follow-up examinations were made in 92.5% of patients after 3 months and 64% after 12 months. At the 3-month and 1-year follow-ups, no statistically significant differences were found in the total evaluation (100-point checklist) Moderately significant instability (6 degrees -10 degrees talar tilt and 6-10 mm anterior talar dislocation) in the conservative groups C and D was observed only in the clinical-radiological instability test. This statistically significant difference is, however, only evident in stress tenographically confirmed dual-ligament lesions. No functional physiological differences can be found after 12 months; on average, the period of incapacitation is 3 weeks shorter than with primary functional treatment, but so far there are no long-term results. Until late results are available, we conclude that conservative treatment, even for professional athletes, can be recommended as the procedure most free of risk and most economical; if at all, operative therapy should only be carried out when the instability is very serious.

[Bacterial kidney disease in salmonids].

Bacterial kidney disease (BKD) is the most important bacterial infection in salmonid fish. Clinics, pathomorphology, distribution and possibility of therapy of BKD are discussed regarding results of literature as well as own experiences.

[Diseases of ornamental fishes--significance for veterinary practice].

Important diseases of ornamental fish are described at the background of the diagnostic material of the Institute for Zoology and Hydrobiology between 1981 and 1984. Invasions by ectoparasites and environmental factors are thought to be the most important causes of the disease. Regarding the possibilities in aquarias the most common methods of treatment are discussed.

Investigations on the bactericidal activity of fosfomycin using the membrane filter-agar dilution method and the time-kill technique.

Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) for a 99% and a 99.9% kill can be reproducibly determined for fosfomycin by the agar dilution procedure when placing the inoculum on top of membrane filters. In 88.7% (85%) of 80 bacterial strains (Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus) examined we found a 99% (99.9%) kill at concentrations higher than the respective MIC by up to one dilution step. For 5% (10%), the bactericidal concentrations were more than two steps higher. Both the MIC and the MBC were influenced by the culture medium. The influence of the medium on fosfomycin activity was also shown by the time-kill curves. In nutrient broth, Mueller-Hinton broth, Iso-Sensitest broth and human plasma water (with and without glucose-6-phosphate) we found different killing rates, different killing maxima and different times of regrowth of the cultures. The bactericidal activity of fosfomycin against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 was more pronounced in plasma water, nutrient broth, and Mueller-Hinton broth than in Iso-Sensitest broth.

[Dose measurements in determining radiation exposure in mammography].

Phantom dose measurements were carried out at a mammography unit-type Siemens Mammomat--using LiF thermoluminescence dosimeters. Full calculative corrections were accomplished for the difference between the elementary composition of the phantom material and the human breast. As the results show, the dose required is smaller by about the factor 6 compared to techniques not using intensifying screens. The mean dose lies between 0.07 and 0.31 rd per X-ray picture.

Quantitative description of sleep stage electrophysiology using digital period analytic techniques.

The purpose of the current study was to assess the overlap in variance of two procedures for the quantification of sleep electrophysiology: conventional stage scoring and computer quantification of tonic activity. Data were collected on 24 nights from eight subjects and were scored according to a modified set of Rechtschaffen and Kales criteria and submitted to a period-analytic computer analysis. Following this, discriminant function analyses were performed on the data for each night to predict the visual stage scores from the computer-generated data. The results indicate a very high degree of predictive accuracy (91.05%) supporting the contention that the computer-quantified data set includes the variance normally captured by stage scoring. The implications of computer quantification of sleep electrophysiology are discussed.
