Dentine hypersensitivity.

Reports received from 32 dentists on the effect of a complex mixture of calcium sucrose phosphate and calcium orthophosphate used as a gel, toothpaste, or slurry in relieving pain in hypersensitive dentine show, in 137 patients, complete relief in 112. It was found that in 54 patients the prior use of stannous fluoride prophylactic paste was beneficial.

A search for linkage in cystic fibrosis.

Linkage between the locus for cystic fibrosis and other genetic markers was explored in 40 families from Birmingham and 20 from Manchester. No strong evidence was found for linkage with any of the markers examined. There was evidence against close linkage with ABO, HLA, and Rh.

Immunoglobulin levels in psychiatric patients.

In a study of 19 schizophrenic patients, 7 nonschizophrenic patients, and 31 controls, the authors found significantly higher mean serum levels of 1) immunoglobulin A in schizophrenic women then in control women and in schizophrenic blacks than in either schizophrenic whites or black controls. 2) immunoglobulin D in schizophrenic blacks than in schizophrenic whites, 3) immunoglobulin M in controls than in nonschizophrenic patients, and 4) immunoglobulin G (IgG) in schizophrenics whose urine was positive for phenothiazines than in schizophrenics whose urine was negative for phenothiazines. High serum levels of IgG were associated with no or mild hallucinations and low levels with moderate or severe hallucinations. Black female patients had significantly more severe hallucinaions than white female patients. The authors discuss the possible implications of these findings.

Assay of pig growth hormone preparations for metabolic activities in the rat and in man.

The possible somatotropic effect in man of porcine growth hormone (pGH) and its plasmin digest has not been comprehensively studied before. For this purpose, pGH was digested with rat or human plasmin; acrylamide gel electrophoresis showed less than 10% native pGH remaining in the digests. Native pGH and the 2 types of plasmin digest possessed similar GH potency, as measured by the weight gain assay in the hypophysectomized rat: 1-2 IU/mg. In 7 GH-deficient children and 3 adults with myotonic dystrophy, we measured the capacity of human GH (hGH), pGH, and pGH plasmin digests to cause: a) the retention of N, P, K, Na, and Cl; b) a rise in plasma free fatty acids; c) a fall in plasma alpha-amino NL d) impaired glucose tolerance; and e) hyperinsulinemia. Human GH was active in all respects at minimal effective dosages of .0168 to 0.168 IU/kg BW(3/4) per day. The pGH preparations had no detectable effect at 0.532 I.U./kg BW(3/4)/day. The data show that in man pGH and its plasmin digests possess less than 1/30, less than 1/10, and less than 1/3 the anabolic, adipokinetic, and diabetogenic potencies of hGH, respectively.

Chronic diseases in the rubber industry.

An overview is presented of epidemiologic studies of chronic diseases in the rubber industry. Analyses of the mortality experience during the period 1964-1972 of workers age 40-64 and retirees age 65-84 of two large rubber and tire manufacturing companies consistently disclosed excesses of deaths attributed to leukemia and lymphosarcoma, and for cancers of the stomach, large intestine, and prostate. The relation of site-specific malignancies to work histories and grouped occupational titles as surrogate measures of work-related exposures to possible carcinogens is described. There was no evidence of company-wide, sizable, consistent excess for the other major chronic diseases causes of death. Although a total cohort deficit in the mortality rate for lung cancer was found, there was a history of increased frequency of exposure to certain work areas among lung cancer decedents. Morbidity studies, including analysis of disability retirements, and ad hoc questionnaire and health testing surveys, disclosed excesses of chronic pulmonary diseases. There was evidence of an interactive effect in the association of work and smoking histories with pulmonary disability retirement.

Purification of herpesvirus nucleocapsids by fluorocarbon extraction.

Purified nucleocapsids were prepared from herpes simplex virus type-1 and herpes simplex virus type-2 infected cells, using a fluorocarbon extraction technique with Freon 113. Fifty to 85% of the total nucleocapsid population remained 'nucleated' or full in terms of the nucleic acid core making them useful as a source of DNA. CsCl banded DNA represented 30--40% of the theoretical yield of the total nucleocapsid population.

St.Agnes--the first year as the team sees it.

The St. Agnes Community Health Centre was established in October 1974, in the rapidly growing area of Tea Tree Gully, South Australia. It was built to provide additional facilities to an already existing comprehensive medical centre. The embryo centre is described during the first year of operation through the eyes of the health team.
