Reactions between purified plasminogen and streptokinase, labelled with (131)I and (125)I respectively, were investigated by polyacrylamide-gel discontinuous electrophoresis. A molecular complex consisting of both (131)I-labelled plasminogen and (125)I-labelled streptokinase migrated between plasminogen and streptokinase. This complex contained bovine plasminogen activator activity. The relative quantities of (131)I-labelled plasminogen and (125)I-labelled streptokinase in this complex were markedly affected by reaction conditions. A fragment that retained 50% or more of the parent activator activity was released from the complex after exposure to mercaptoethanol. This subcomponent had an estimated molecular weight of 70000, and contained both (131)I-labelled plasminogen and (125)I-labelled streptokinase.

Levamisole, an anthelminthic agent with immunostimulatory properties, was used in a double-blind, controlled therapeutic trial in rheumatoid arthritis. Patients received either levamisole 100 mg 4 days a week, or placebo, for a period of 4 months. Significant improvement in the treated group, as compared with the control group, was found in the number of tender and swollen joints, grip strength, range of joint motion, sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein. On double-blind global evaluation by the examining physicians, 9 of 14 patients on levamisole and none of 13 on placebo were considered to have improved. Adverse effects did not differ in frequency between the two groups except for mild alteration in taste, which was more common with levamisole.
Health-care organizations are beginning to apply the principles of total quality management (TQM). Implementing TQM in a health-care laboratory requires incorporating quality improvement (QI) and quality planning (QP) with quality laboratory practices (QLP), quality control (QC), and quality assurance (QA) to provide a complete quality management system. QI and QP can be initiated by developing a strategic plan as a pilot QI project. QI project teams are then introduced to accomplish the highest priority goals. This implementation approach improves strategic planning by using group problem-solving tools and techniques, such as process flow charts, brainstorming, nominal group, fishbone diagrams, consensus decision making, and Pareto analysis. The approach also improves the success of project teams by providing a clear management agenda and a commitment to project-by-project QI.
