Dural sinus thrombosis in the newborn period is a rare but underrecognized condition which may cause seizures, macrocephaly, lethargy, and respiratory depression. A 10-day-old term infant with no pre- or perinatal risk factors for thrombosis presented with seizures and was found to have dural sinus thrombosis on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One week later, MRI revealed partial resolution and 3 weeks later disclosed a complete resolution of the thrombosis. Clinicians should consider the diagnosis of neonatal dural sinus thrombosis in infants presenting with seizures and/or increased intracranial pressure even in the absence of risk factors or when the cranial computed tomography is normal. MRI is the most sensitive diagnostic tool to establish the diagnosis and permit a noninvasive follow-up, contributing to our understanding of the natural history, associated pathology, and prognosis of this condition.

Diaper dermatitis, an acute inflammation of the skin in the diaper area, is the most common dermatologic disorder of infancy. This placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group trial compared the efficacy and safety of miconazole nitrate 0.25% in a zinc oxide/petrolatum base with that of the ointment base alone in treating acute diaper dermatitis in infants and evaluated the role of Candida albicans in the response to treatment. Infants age 2-13 months with diaper rash were treated with either miconazole nitrate 0.25% (N = 101) or ointment base (N = 101) for 7 days. Although improvement in rash from baseline was seen in both treatment groups on days 3, 5, and 7, patients receiving miconazole nitrate 0.25% had significantly fewer rash sites and lower mean total rash scores on days 5 and 7 (p < 0.001). In the miconazole nitrate 0.25% group, improvement was most marked among those with moderate or severe diaper dermatitis at baseline and among patients whose baseline rashes were positive for C. albicans. Treatment with miconazole nitrate 0.25% was as safe as with ointment base alone. Miconazole nitrate 0.25% ointment is a safe and effective treatment for diaper dermatitis in infants.
We are reporting a case of an infant with an intracranial malignant teratoma which was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound at 37 weeks of gestational age. After a cesarean delivery, the resection of the tumor was performed at 24 h of age. This infant is currently the oldest reported survivor that carries this prenatal diagnosis. He is also the first reported infant with surgical intervention for an intracranial malignant teratoma diagnosed prenatally.
Long-range planning through the acquisition of capital equipment basically involves considering two alternatives--buy or lease. Choosing which of these alternatives is more advantageous for a medical group will depend upon a number of factors including the specific financial terms associated with the purchase or lease of the equipment, potential technological obsolescence of the equipment, and the financial posture of the group at the time of the decision.
For the upgrading of equipment that is necessary in radiologic practice, leasing is more convenient and less expensive than buying. Changes in tax laws, embodied in the Economic Recovery Act of 1981, have increased tax benefits of this arrangement.
